  • At Rainbow Railroad, every June, we have a "pinkwashing" problem - where corporations seek to make donations to our mission for Pride, without directly engaging with the mission itself.

Many other organizations have the same problem - whether that's casinos donating to Alzheimer's programs while taking money from those with Alzheimer's, Corporate Banks donating to Food Banks, or social media giants engaging with political advocacy.

This session will facilitate a conversation between participating fundraisers about how we can balance the need for advocacy, mission engagement, and donor support. It is not just possible, but advantageous, to learn how to integrate activism and advocacy into your fundraising - so let's explore how we can do that.

    Learning Outcomes

    - How to integrate activism, advocacy, and engagement into traditional fundraising models

    - When to consider refusing a donation on ethical grounds

    - How to have difficult but necessary conversations with potential funders

    - How to engage and educate funders on your mission and its importance - and making this a good thing!

  • The Fundraising Leadership Podcast is for professionals in the nonprofit world who want to advance their careers, develop essential management skills, grow their leadership capacity, and get results for their organizations.

  • From its inception 25 years ago, the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter's Fundraising Day has offered delegates a top return on investment. Fundraising Day provides a one-day opportunity to network with the sectors most sought-after professionals and to learn from Canada's top educators about the unique challenges and opportunities within the realm of fundraising and development.

Though the fundraising profession has evolved considerably over the years, so many principles of fundraising remain the same. In 2019, on the conference's 25th anniversary, the Chapter celebrated "The Fabric of Fundraising" - a day of best practices, old ideas that have become new again, and the simplest approaches that drive the best donor experiences – and the best results.

Hosted by 2019 Fundraising Day Chair, Maeve Strathy, these special episodes were recorded live at Fundraising Day.

In this episode, Farrah Rooney and Chris Carter of Candela Strategies join us for Ignite Their Passion! The Resurgence of Values-Based Marketing.

Picture it: a divisive election resulting in starkly drawn cultural and political lines, during which a cola behemoth makes a commercial showing us how they can make it all better. Sounds familiar? It happened in the 70s with Coke's wildly successful The Hilltop campaign, and last year with another cola company's not-so-successful ad. In 2018 we saw the viral breakthrough of the Colin Kaepernick Nike ad, which struck through our cultural clutter like a lightning bolt. We remember them, don't we? Brands are clamouring to take advantage of values-based marketing that triggers strong emotions. In this session, Farrah and Chris demonstrate how non-profits can use a similar campaign strategy to be memorable, engage new supporters and build a relationship with their donor base for years to come.

In this episode, Seanna Millar and Adam Starkman of SickKids Foundation join us for Building Purpose-Driven Brand Partnerships: The Evolution of Corporate Engagement.

In this session, Seanna and Adam discuss how companies and brands continue to focus on the role that they play within society, and the value that doing good has on their business. They share insights on how customers and employees expect companies to be doing more and how corporate social responsibility (CSR) is being elevated to a new level - with many companies going to great lengths to define their purpose and communicate it broadly as a way of attracting talent and differentiating themselves in the market. They discuss how charities and not-for-profits can play an important role in this evolution so long as they are able to authentically align on purpose, and demonstrate meaningful impact to partners.

In this episode, Nicole Malcolm joins us for In the Moment: Improv Skills for Fundraising Professionals.

In this session, participants added new tools to their fundraising tool-belt by learning some tricks, techniques, and truths from the world of improvisation. In meetings with donors, fundraisers need to be active listeners who are agile and able to turn on a dime as needs change or when the meeting starts to go in a different direction. Participants practiced improv warm-up activities to get them and their teams in the collaborative mindset for a meeting. Together the group learned how to better “be in the moment” and keep their cool, even though some were sweating on the inside. Part of this presentation was interactive and “on your feet” - getting participants to think differently about the way they approach their work.

In this episode, Mo Waja joins us for Let's Talk Speaking: How to Effectively Present your Non-Profit Story One on One, In Small Groups, or in Front of Large Audiences.

The core of strong relationship building is the connections that we make in person, talking about our organizations to prospective donors and our community of supporters. In that moment, whether in casual conversation over lunch or during a formal presentation in front of a prospect, we become the representation of our good work; which means that the decision to support our organization relies, in large part, on how compellingly we can tell our non-profit story and express our need. In this session, Mo challenges delegates to look at the three pillars of good communication: authority, clarity, and confidence, and discusses how to leverage good formal and interpersonal communication skills to build better relationships with our community of supporters.

  • AFP Greater Toronto Chapter President, Caroline Riseboro (President & CEO, Trillium Health Partners Foundation) and Chapter President-Elect, Amy Pawluk (Executive Vice President, Marketing and New Business Development, Blakely Inc.) shed some light & insights from their own experiences on fundraising during a pandemic:

What's changed? What are some lessons learned? What's still to come? What do donors want?

In this virtual edition of our Breaking Bread & Raising Dough series, members discussed their fundraising wins, challenges and opportunities.

  • Secrets. What is the secret behind your success as a fundraiser? Did you ever have to hide something crucial from your colleagues? What about your career would really surprise people? Has your organization ever had really exciting news you had to keep under your hat until the big announcement? We don’t always have the option of being forthcoming with everyone around us. Sometimes we have to walk a delicate line and not share everything that might be on our minds. Maybe you needed to get something off your chest but could never find the right time or you thought sharing would be too risky...

In this episode of the Speaker Discovery Series, speakers share their secret stories for the first time to a live audience of their fellow fundraising professionals.

It can be hard to find your chance to shine. If every conference wants experience, how do you get experience speaking at conferences? That’s why AFP Toronto began the Speaker Discovery Series (SDS). We want to give first-time speakers an opportunity to receive coaching, mentorship, and constructive feedback. No slideshows allowed. Just a story, a voice, and a little bravery.
