  • Do you realize that once-upon-a-time, carrying a few extra pounds of fat was considered a sign of good health? How did we go from a culture that appreciated girth to one obsessed with being skinny? Why do we exercise the way we do? What societal forces influence the ways that we exercise? Dr. Natalia Petrzela is an Associate Professor of History at the New School in New York City and teaches about the history of the fitness industry; Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession is her book that describes the origins of our obsession with fitness and how that has shaped our society (pun fully intended). Dr. Petrzela shares her insights on what has made exercise popular and what that means for our workout routines. It's all about the history of half-naked people getting sweaty on this episode of All About Fitness.

  • There is a famous saying that abs are made in the kitchen; what it means is that no matter how hard you exercise, if you are not following a proper nutrition protocol, you may not get the results that you want. The purpose of the food we eat is to provide specific nutrients that we need for optimal health and performance. The nutrients themselves cause a number of chemical reactions in the body that could either increase lean muscle mass or torch unwanted fat. Dr. Shannon O'Grady, the Chief Product Officer for Gnarly Nutrition, describes the benefits of supplements and how they support your exercise efforts. Dr. O'Grady explains the chemistry behind nutrition and which supplements could help achieve certain results. It's all about the science of supplements on this episode of All About Fitness.

  • We are all born knowing how to walk which explains why running is one of the most popular forms of exercise; we already know how to do it and all that's required is a decent set of shoes, some proper kit and you're off. However, poor running mechanics or a poorly designed training program could cause injuries and keep you from being able to do any exercise. There are many different methods of training for running, the most important approach is to identify one that works for your needs and follow the proper progression. Eoin Everard, PhD, is a champion runner who is also a physiotherapist and a pilates coach. Over the course of his experience as a runner, therapist and coach, Eoin has developed a functional approach to exercise that can significantly reduce the risk of injury while helping you to improve your running performance. It's all about how to be a better runner on this episode of All About Fitness.

  • Time. Equipment. Not knowing what to do. These are all common excuses for not getting results from an exercise program; however, one important thing missing from this list, the issue of chronic inflammation. Inflammation is your immune system's natural response when fighting an outside invader like a bacteria or promoting the healing process after tissue has been injured. Acute, or short-term, inflammation is your body working to heal itself. Chronic, or long-term, inflammation can actually work against you and cause a number of negative health outcomes that could keep you from experiencing results from an exercise program.

Dr. Bill Ferro is a chiropractor who realized that chronic gut inflammation was effecting many of his patients and keeping them from becoming completely healed. Dr. Ferro realized that helping his patients to first reduce inflammation in their digestive tract was a key component to helping them heal from their other health issues. As a result, he developed the Betr Health protocol to help his clients improve their health from the inside-out by reducing gut inflammation. It's important to note that among the many health benefits of reducing chronic inflammation are losing unhealthy bodyweight and improving results from exercise. The Betr Health protocol is so successful at helping individuals to improve their health by reducing chronic inflammation that is used by many health insurance programs seeking to improve the health of their members. Dr. Ferro discusses the negative health outcomes caused by chronic inflammation, shares how he created the Betr Health protocol and offers some simple suggestions for what you can to do reduce inflammation in your body. It's all about achieving better health by reducing inflammation on this episode of All About Fitness.

  • Necessity is the mother of invention. Fitness enthusiast, personal trainer and powerlifter Molly Galbraith saw a need for women who enjoy being strong to come together to form a community around strength training and that is how Girls Gone Strong came into being. What started as an online support community has evolved into an organization focused on education, specifically on the science of strength training not just for women, but for all genders. Molly and the Girls Gone Strong team have created two ground-breaking education programs, the Women's Coaching Specialist and the Pre-post Natal Coaching Specialist, to teach personal trainers the proper science behind exercise program design for these specific populations. Molly discusses the need for evidence-based, gender-specific exercise programs, how this has changed the fitness industry and offers an important lesson on the benefits of strength training for all aspects of life. It's all about the life-changing benefits of strength training on this episode of All About Fitness.

  • Not all strength training is the same; lifting a barbell is different than swinging a kettlebell and using a set of dumbbells provides a completely different workout than using a machine. To make sure that you are doing the best exercises and workouts for your goals, you should first have an understanding of how the human body is designed to move and the different ways that it can be challenged with exercise.Kevin Carr is a Boston-based performance coach, educator, massage therapist, author and a co-creator of the Functional Strength Coach Certification that teaches how to design strength-training programs for the way the body is designed to move. Coach Carr works with Coach Mike Boyle, the founder of Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, a facility that helps individuals from professional athletes to septuagenarian grandmothers improve their ability to perform their favorite activities (Coach Boyle has helped the Boston Red Sox and Boston University Men's Hockey win the World Series and National Championship, so they know what they're doing) and that has been recognized by Men's Health as one of the top gyms in the U.S.Kevin is also the co-author of Functional Strength Training Anatomy, a book that explains how to strengthen your body by using the muscle the way they are designed to work. On this episode, Kevin talks about the difference between bodybuilding and performance training and why you should be doing the latter instead of the former. In addition, he shares how some of your muscles actually function (not the way you think) and the types of exercises that you should be doing to help them become stronger so that you can perform your best. It's all about how to improve your ability to move on this episode of All About Fitness. To learn more about Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning, please visit: https://www.certifiedfsc.com/To see how MBSC trains their athletes, follow them on the 'Gram: https://www.instagram.com/mbscofficial/To pick up a copy of Functional Strength Training Anatomy, follow this link: https://amzn.to/3hpvRM4GNARLY NUTRITION: Visit goGnarly.com and enter promo code AAFITNESS to get 15% off your entire purchase todayLearn how to design your own workouts; order a copy of Smarter Workouts: the Science of Exercise Made Simplehttps://amzn.to/3dBVfg4Learn how exercise can slow the aging process and allow you to add YEARS to your life with Ageless Intensity: High Intensity Workouts to Slow the Aging Processhttps://amzn.to/3eYieSCLearn more about your ad choices.
