Sucharita Tyagi has been at the forefront of film criticism, notably embracing the YouTube medium for reviews as early as 2015. Back then, she was reviewing films on YouTube for the Film Companion website. This segment evolved into "Not a Movie Review" with Sucharita. A curated selection of episodes from "Not a Movie Review" was subsequently released as a web series on Disney+ Hotstar under the same title in March 2020.

In this episode, we're getting into what makes a movie 'woke'—is it a new trend, or has good cinema always been woke? We also explore the movie critique scene in India, talking about the hurdles critics face, and of course, shooting the breeze about films from Archies to Animal. Plus, we're spilling the tea on some cool independent flicks that released recently. Don't miss the fun and insightful discussion!

A delightful conversation which shouldn’t be missed. This is also the episode that I recorded in person with good mics so the quality of the audio will be also very good.

  • An episode about anti-caste laws being passed in the USA. This episode was recorded a few months back.

Kshama Sawant, an Indian-American politician and economist, has served on the Seattle City Council since 2014. She is a member of Socialist Alternative, the first and only member of the party to date to be elected to public office.

In 2012, Kshama ran as a Socialist Alternative candidate for the Washington State Legislature and surprised everyone by winning 29% of the vote. The momentum continued in her campaign for the Seattle City Council, where she boldly ran on a platform of fighting for a $15/hr minimum wage, rent control, and taxing the super-rich to fund mass transit and education. In November, she defeated a 16-year incumbent Democrat to become the first socialist elected in a major US city in decades.

The Seattle City Council's law against discrimination based on caste—the first such law passed by a city in the United States—was written and forwarded by Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, the only Indian American member of the council.

Prashant Nema is a software engineer who has lived in Seattle for 22 years and worked for Microsoft, Dell, and Meta (Facebook). He was part of the Seattle team (CSIA) that organized, advocated for, and supported the Seattle ordinance against caste discrimination passed in February 2023. He is also a member of the Bay Area, California-based Ambedkar King Study Circle.

You can find his article written in the local Seattle media during the Seattle Campaign here:

  • In this podcast, we discussed the vibrant independent Indian rap and hip-hop scene. On creating art in the age of commerce and dealing with unethical recording labels. The power of music to challenge societal norms at the same time being playful and super interesting in its approach. And finally the impact of the film "Gully Boy" on the rap and hip-hop movement.

Tushar Adhav aka BamBoy is a music producer/Dj and rapper. He is known for his brand of murky bass often intertwined with groove-addled samples and music from his roots. BamBoy is also an Emcee who never fails to deliver hard-hitting truth bombs in his verses. He is also a key member of the HipHop Collective 'Swadesi.’

Under the pseudonym "Kaali Duniya," Tushar Adhav creates music that takes on a different persona. Through Kaali Duniya, he crafts sound-system-influenced tracks characterized by dark soundscapes, a haunting atmosphere, and brain-tingling basslines. Notably, he curates samples deeply rooted in cultural and social contexts, adding another layer of significance to his work.

What sets his art apart is his ability to produce socially and politically charged tunes intended for the dance floor. His music has the power to move your body and stimulate your thoughts simultaneously.

  • I recorded a podcast with Manoj Mitta, author of the new book: Caste Pride: Battles for Equality in Hindu India.

In this podcast episode, we delve into the fascinating history of caste and social reforms in India. From detailing the strange laws during colonial times to the interesting courtroom debates and the lesser-known heroes, the narrative uncovers a compelling and lesser-explored aspect of our past. We discuss the barbaric punishment imposed on Lower Castes in Madras in 1816, known as "Confinement in the stocks," and the disturbing practice of "The Breast Tax."

Exploring the root cause of the scarcity of intercaste marriages, we learn about Watandar Joshis, Satyasodhak Samaj, and Self-respect marriages by Periyar, as they shaped the legal concepts of marriages in India.

We also uncover the many unsung figures from history who lead historic battles against untouchability. Manoj also delves into Mahatma Gandhi's stance during this fight for untouchability and addresses whether caste finds sanction in ancient scriptures, exploring the root cause of this problem as described in religious books. This episode takes listeners through the context of that era, the struggle for equality, and how reforms in Indian society began through both legal and social means.
