We’re thrilled to be ending Season 1 by featuring an ICONIC Australian. Jean Kittson is known and loved as an author, performer and scriptwriter for stage, television, radio, magazines, newspapers and her autobiographical books. She is also an experienced MC, keynote speaker, panellist, debater and facilitator in the corporate, government and community arena.
In this episode, Jean shares her years of experience and outlines the importance of an excellent brief and what it takes to get the best from talent at our events. Jean’s insights into how to present on camera spoke to our co-hosts, and we believe you’ll learn a lot too.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business. Jean offers us the perspective of the talent which we're yet to explore on the podcast!

Our special guest this episode is Helen Fairclough, who has the weighty position of Director of Business Relaunch for the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. In our chat with Helen, we go behind the scenes of the year that was for the Centre, for Helen and the Victorian Events Industry.
What we find is an organisation and leader who have been empowered to evolve to meet the challenges that 2020 presented to us all. Though the situation has been challenging, Helen and the team have used it as an opportunity to pause, reflect and reset to help secure the venue's future and establish a point of difference for customers. The aim of the ‘business relaunch’ is to explore new products, services and ways of working and we find out that there are some genuine, tangible results already shining through with this change in approach.
This is a case study in what it means to build innovation into the DNA of an organisation. The MCEC has moved away from understanding people based on their job function and valuing them for their contribution.
When someone asks you who you are, what do you say? Do you start by giving your job title? If you do, you may have lost your identity in your career. In Keep Calm And Reclaim Your Identity, we look at how we can lose our identity when we blur the lines between work and personal life. This is your reminder that you are more than your job!

In 2020, our peak events industry association, Meetings & Events Australia had to take both the national conference “Evolve” and national MEA Awards online for the first time. We’ve invited National MEA Board members Paula Nolan and Kirsty Forbes on to the podcast to share their experience and learnings as leads on the MEALIVE Awards and Evolve: Renovated respectively.
We had a great time chatting with Paul and Kirsty, and you’ll learn a lot about how important it is to reimagine an experience for an online audience.
We cover a lot of ground from the importance of the right on-air talent, audience interactivity tips, the importance of partnering with the right vendors and making the right content choices. It all comes down to a lesson that has been shared on the podcast several times - when it comes to virtual events; we’re making television now.

Luke is known throughout the industry as one of the most respected and connected people in the hospitality sector. In 2016, Luke’s attention turned to recruitment which was a natural choice as it combined his experience in hiring, passion for mentoring and vast industry network.

We also get down to understanding what the current recruitment climate is like. This leads to hints and tips for what to do now to be ready for future employment opportunities.
In Keep Calm and Be Fearless, Steve Angel takes us on a big topic. We look at understanding what fear actually is, how it can hold us back. By better understanding our fears and articulating what’s behind them, we can actually take steps to overcome them.

Our guest in this episode is Carmel Crouch, the fearless and innovative Managing Director of the Steps Group of Companies; a national not for profit, making a difference by providing opportunities for individuals and communities to shine.
Steve Angel takes the driver’s seat for our chat with Carmel, to learn how she led her team, sponsors and guests to host their annual STEPS Grand Winter Ball virtually (for the first time ever). We find a strategic thinker who has taken calculated risks to double down and not only on the delivery of a major virtual event but so much more.
You won’t want to miss this discussion of what it takes to “Think Big” and follow through. From a million-dollar investment in the organisation’s training programs going to mixed-mode through to her touching pride in the people, Steps have helped - we think you’ll finish the episode in awe of Carmel as we have.
In Keep Calm And Move, Steve chats with Peter Parker, CEO of the Blue Earth Foundation about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. We learn how Blue Earth promotes and helps Australians to live better and live longer, by making mindful moving a part of everyday life.
Blue Earth are also rallying people and organisations from across the world to ‘pass the baton’ across all time zones on Sunday 4 October, World Walking Day 2020! The virtual baton race celebrates the power of physical activity in unifying the world during the COVID-19 crisis.

How many leaders openly admit that their team is ten times better than them at what they do? Our guest is John Dinh, Director of Scene Change, is that leader! A leader who is here to share 15 years of tech experience in one convenient podcast episode.
We learned a lot chatting with John and we know that you will too. From understanding how the proper use of tech supports event messaging, how to get the best from your audio-visual company through to a timely reminder to bring your key suppliers into your creative process as early as possible.
Probably the most significant message here is about how producing virtual events is like producing TV and John has a lot of experience and insight that he is happy to share.
In Keep Calm And Listen we learn about our universal need to feel heard and understood. It turns out that whilst listening is a very powerful tool, we don’t always use it well. All this and more when we explore the distinction between listening and hearing & share tips on becoming a better listener.

It’s time for an update from Back to the Future of Events creators and hosts, Chad Davis, Steve Angel and Paul Boustani. The self-described event nerds are ready to share it all in this episode; you’ll learn about their most memorable events, their epic fails, how they first met and how the podcast came together.
To make this possible we asked Jen Rudland to take on hosting duties and create a space where the team felt comfortable to share. Jen is the former Design Director of Decorative Events and a visual and tactile storyteller, conceptual and collaborative.
After doing the big green change from Sydney to Tasmania Jen is now part of the team with Milkwood; dedicated to teaching and sharing permaculture skills, for living like it matters. As Jen mentions in the episode intro - they offer a range of virtual courses that are worth checking out!

You wouldn’t think there are many parallels between producing a rock concert tour and your events would you? Our guest Haydn Johnston from the Architects of Entertainment is here to prove us all wrong!
In this episode, we put co-host Chad Davis in the driver’s seat for a chat with Haydn that covers a lot of ground. Haydn explains how it is that the business came to be and how much it relies on the engagement and development of the next generation of production people. This is a real behind-the-scenes insight into what it takes to put on major international concerts and music festivals; but more than that it’s a masterclass in mentorship and team management that we can all learn a lot from.
Other highlights of the conversation to look out for include; Haydn’s 80/20 approach to handing over his events as well as his participation in the Australian Live Music Business Council and the charitable program looking out for the needs of all production crew, Crew Care.
In Keep Calm and Trust, Steve Angel takes us through the importance of trust to our working and personal relationships. We then learn five key characteristics that create trust in our interactions with each other.

We have great news - we found an iso-beard that is doing something good!
In this episode, you'll meet Andrew Hiebl, CEO of the Association of Australian Convention Bureaux. Andrew shares what it’s like growing up the son of two regional artisans and how that has connected to his passion for regional tourism businesses. He gives us a lesson on what it is convention bureaux do... AND he explains the worthy cause that inspired him to grow an amazing beard.
Andrew is uniquely placed to give us all some advice on how to support regional events and tourism businesses that have struggled from a dark bushfire season through to the pandemic-induced crisis. He also sheds light on the lobbying work that has been going on in the last few months. It’s a very complicated landscape to navigate but it IS unified and it is certainly proactive.
We can’t wait for you to hear what we learned from Andrew and to hear how it inspires a riffing session between our co-hosts. We would also love for you to check our Andrew’s fundraising page for Beyond Blue - if only to check out his epic iso-beard AND donate a little (or a lot of) money; https://individual-fundraiser-ongoing.everydayhero.com/au/the-covid-beard-must-go.
In Keep Calm and Self Soothe, we go over what it takes to manage stress, even when we don’t have time for a yoga class or meditation session. Steve takes us through some quick and effective techniques to help us take the edge of right there and then!

Ever wondered how TEDxSydney goes about putting together such engaging and memorable content each year? This is the episode for you!
Fenella Kernebone has what some call a portfolio career; ideas curator, MC, speaker and presentation trainer and is known for her many on-air roles with SBS and ABC... oh, and for leading the curatorial team at TEDxSydney.
We’re honoured to have Fenella on the podcast this episode to talk about the intricacies of curating ideas and how a journalistic approach can be adopted by any of us. We recorded this chat just before the announcement of TEDxSydney going virtual and you’ll learn more about what goes into building this aspirational and inspirational event.
We can’t wait for you to hear what we learned from Fenella AND we can’t wait for November 6th and the next TEDxSydney. There are lots of lessons in this episode from understanding the need to have a story arc behind event content through to the importance of curiosity and continuous learning.
In Keep Calm and Fail, we discover that fear of failure can stop us dead in our tracks. We explore that fear of failure prevents us from even starting. We discuss the importance of reframing the idea of failure on our way to striving for excellence. We also touch on the importance of working with those that align with our values to create environments where a “failure” is a step towards improvement and excellence.

We aren’t going to sugar-coat this - there are some raw and emotional moments in this episode as we journey through some of the highs and lows of Jonny’s journey. They generously share the challenges of growing up gay in Tasmania in the 80’s, we hear about how they were there at New York Fashion Week for September 11th - they also explain how their special brand of inclusive LGBTQ+ events were created out of the necessity of being excluded from the mainstream in the past.

In this episode of Back to the Future of Events, we find out what it’s like when the CEO of a major events brand started in the company warehouse (when he could have been a spy). Gab Robinson, the CEO of Harry the Hirer is a disciplined leader who isn’t one for the spotlight - it’s his humility and confidence in those around him that get the spotlight instead.
From the state of play for major international events like Melbourne Cup, the heartbreak of having to stand down over a thousand staff and even the importance of a morning routine; we get in deep in this conversation with Gab. You’ll come away with an understanding that Harry the Hirer is a business that doesn’t just talk about employee engagement, they live it in the good times and the bad.
We really don’t want to say too much here - it’s best you listen to how it all goes down in the episode.
In Keep Calm And Set Up Your Day, Steve Angel takes us through the importance of starting your day right. A little discipline at the start of the day seems to go a long way towards success. Steve takes us through the why and the how. Make sure to take notes.

Keith Harwood has spent his career perfectly matching speaking talent to events audiences - a global pandemic shutting down the live events industry certainly hasn’t stopped that. In this episode, we take a behind-the-scenes look at how Keith and his business, Inspire Speakers have adapted to survive in these challenging times.
In our chat with Keith (and in the discussion amongst our hosts), we cover a lot of ground; from understanding what Keith means when he says business fit through to the lessons learned from putting on virtual events - there are some real nuggets of wisdom in this episode!
Keith inadvertently drops some truth bombs about how we’re delivering virtual events. Hint, it’s all about the audience experience and interactivity. Keith’s perspective adds weight to our chats with previous guests including Alex Daoust in Episode 5 and Bonus Episode 2 with Maz Speaks.
Also in this episode, we consider some questions around pricing in a crisis. Should the price of our services drop because most events are currently virtual? Should you reduce your rates to attract the few clients who are spending on events right now? What impact could these decisions now have on your future? This is a hot topic for the industry and one that we’ll be grappling with over the next few years.
Given all of this our regular wellness segment in this episode is focussed on how we can better negotiate. In Keep Calm and Negotiate, Steve Angel takes us through effective pointers on what to remember when approaching a negotiation. He helps us to consider how clarity of intention and our emotional state impacts on the process. We can tell you now that anger doesn’t help!

At the best of times wrangling 170 unique venue brands would be a challenge - in this episode you’ll learn what it’s like to do it in 2020! As the dynamic General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Australian Venue Company, our featured guest, Kylie Moncur, generously shares the ins and outs of her experience of this year (so far).
Without sugar-coating the facts, the thing that shines through in this episode is that Kylie relishes her role and takes great pride in the business and its people - it’s the kind of positivity that is contagious!
You’ll hear about the two million dollar fund that the company set up to support over 4000 staff that had to be stood down at the start of the crisis. We discover the importance of each one of the 170 venue managers in the business. Kylie shares some current innovations in the company as well as where she believes we’re headed and what events might look like going forward. Hint, the day of the buffet is over.
We learn about the power of belief (and investment) in your people. We discover that it takes an understanding of client wants and needs, quick responses to changing conditions and a good dose of gut instinct to thrive.
Our co-host discussion centres on Kylie’s pride in what the Australian Venue Company has done and is doing for their staff and the rest unfolds from there for Steve, Paul and Chad. There are key takeaways here that apply to even the smallest of businesses.
In this episode’s segment of Keep Calm And, Steve brings in special guest Natascha Lavery - an executive coach and trainer to talk about a challenging topic, burnout. In Keep Calm And Prevent Burnout, Steve and Natascha chat about what it’s like to experience burnout. Natascha then brings her unique blend of business, neuro-psychology and education to share with us what it takes to recover.

Well, buckle up and join co-hosts Steven Angel, Chad Davis and Paul Boustani for a rollercoaster of a bonus episode - with the incomparable Maz Speaks (a.k.a. Maz Farrelly) who flips the script on professional communication.
Maz spills the secrets to grabbing attention that she's learned from a career in television; interviews with 12,000 would be reality stars and an audience of 8 billion eyes. Learn to cut out the white noise, to be interesting and even some tips on how to dress to impress.
Everything you hear will challenge you and some of it is down-right confronting. Trust us, you will hear the moments where she blows our minds - several times.
