This week I have an inspiring conversation with Kevin Hutchison, a newly published author and wonderful person I worked with in my author program, Nonfiction Book School. We talk about his unique path from pastor to marketing professional, with a journey from self-rejecting into self-love. Kevin was inspired to share his story through his upcoming book, Alchemy from Ashes: Bringing My Shattered Faith, Mental Health, and Sexuality into Wholeness. We also explore the roadblocks he encountered during the writing process and how he was able to move through them.
Writing and publishing a book alone is difficult, and creative work can be a slow, nonlinear process. We discuss how Kevin surrounded himself with key people who helped him bring his book to life and how their contributions impacted the final product.
Kevin Hutchison is a marketing professional and former pastor, whose talent and expertise have been leveraged in both profit and not-for-profit organizations. He has worked for national and global agencies, held tenure in communications with a Midwestern mega-church, and has served on boards such as the American Marketing Association and RESPECT, an education-and theater-based anti-bullying nonprofit.

In todayâs podcast episode, I give an update on my life in Portugal. When my family and I decided to move here, we understood that no place is perfect. There are trade-offs wherever you decide to land. Itâs important to understand your personal hierarchy of needsâa crucial element when deciding to relocate. For instance, decide what your non-negotiables are when choosing living arrangements. We also made an intentional division of household roles, with my husband being a stay-at-home dad.
We have lived in four countries, and we donât know if Portugal is our forever home, but for now itâs the perfect place for our family.

I love this weekâs interview on Beyond Better with guest, Nina Sossamon-Pogue. We had a real, raw conversation about resilience and mental health, drawing from Ninaâs remarkable journey through elite athletics, television news, and corporate leadership.
After leaving home at age thirteen to train as a gymnast, she became a USA Gymnastics team member and later an SEC athlete at LSU, until an injury ended her gymnastics career. This injury was a catalyst for a twenty-year career as an Emmy-winning journalist and news anchor.
Nina later transitioned into tech and corporate leadership, playing an integral role in a successful IPO. Today, she is a sought-after speaker, best-selling author, and podcast host who helps individuals and organizations thrive through challenges and change to reach new levels of success.
This was such an honest, valuable conversation. Donât miss it.

One of the first questions people ask me when they learn I live in Portugal is whether I speak Portuguese. Thatâs why Iâm thrilled to share my conversation on Beyond Better with Anita da Silva, a certified teacher with nineteen years of experience and founder of âPortuguese with Anita,â one of the biggest communities of Portuguese learners that boasts 100,000 students on its social media platforms.

People often underestimate what itâs like to navigate life in an area that speaks a different language. And Portuguese is tough to learn! We discuss how language shapes oneâs understanding of culture and opens a door to experiencing life abroad more fully.
