What is binaural audio?
Binaural audio sound, a truly immersive sonic experience, has captivated sound enthusiasts and professionals alike with its unique ability to simulate a 3D auditory environment. Offering an extraordinary depth and realism to sound reproduction, binaural audio enables listeners to perceive sounds as if they were physically present in the environment where the sound is occurring.
Binaural audio sound, unlike traditional stereo sound, utilises two microphones placed in a manner similar to human ears. This spatial configuration is crucial in capturing the intricate audio nuances that produce a heightened sense of realism. The slight time differences and alterations in frequency when a sound wave reaches each ear helps in establishing the direction and distance of the sound source, a phenomenon known as binaural cues.
By mimicking the natural hearing process, binaural audio offers an authentic 3D listening experience. It provides listeners with an unparalleled depth of immersion that surpasses stereo and surround sound formats. From capturing the minute sounds of nature to producing immersive virtual reality soundscapes, the applications of binaural audio are vast and multifaceted.
In the era of digital media, binaural audio is increasingly favoured for its unique capabilities in creating realistic audio environments. The rise of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies has also amplified the demand for binaural audio, as it provides an enhanced sensory experience that syncs perfectly with the immersive visuals. As an important component of the virtual reality technology stack, binaural audio enhances the VR experience by producing immersive, high-fidelity soundscapes that add depth and dimension to virtual worlds.
Additionally, binaural audio finds its significance in the fields of neuroscience and psychology, contributing to research in spatial hearing and sound perception. Binaural beats, a form of auditory biohack, have been leveraged for meditation and relaxation, as they reportedly assist in inducing states of focused concentration or deep sleep.
To conclude, binaural audio sound stands as an epitome of sonic innovation, bridging the gap between digital media and human sensory perception. Its superior ability to create an immersive, three-dimensional sound experience has ushered in a new era of auditory experience, making it a valuable asset in the landscape of modern audio technology.

Here's another episode from the London Underground, this time on the Jubilee Line. You can follow the exact location by listening to the station announcements in the carriage. f you're new to this kind of audio, it works like this:
Binaural audio is a technique that recreates a three-dimensional sound experience for listeners using stereo headphones. It simulates the way sound is perceived by our ears in real life, capturing the subtle differences in timing and intensity that occur when sound reaches each ear. By recording audio with specialized microphones placed in the ears of a dummy head (or using digital signal processing,) binaural audio can produce an immersive and realistic sound environment, allowing listeners to perceive sound coming from different directions and distances, providing a sense of depth and spatial accuracy.
Do let me know if there's a particular sound you'd like me to record for a future edition. There's links for voicenotes and emails in the show notes, and on the website: https://binauralaudioworld.com/

This is a trip on the Docklands Light Railway in London, or the DLR as it is known. It's a seven minute journey from Mudchute station to Heron Quays (although for some unknown reason I say Heron Gate in the recording. Heron Quays is correct). From the Transport For London website:
'The Docklands Light Railway is an automated light metro system primarily serving the redeveloped Docklands area of London and providing a direct connection between London's two major financial districts, Canary Wharf and the City of London.'

This week, come with me on a hike along the Glass House Mountains trail, in the Sunshine Coast Region of the state of Queensland. The area is home to around only 5000 people, but a good few of them seemed to be on the trail taking in the majestic sights, and sounds of the mountains at the same time as I was.
