  • Due to a lot of people messaging about this subject, this episode is a rebroadcast of one of the first episodes of the Bio Alchemy podcast. Many of you won't have heard it as yet, so I hope it brings value.

    Essential oils are a controversial topic in some circles, due to the fact that they're sometimes peddled by stay-at-home MLM moms, who claim they can heal just about every condition on the planet, or be used as a remedy for absolutely everything. While many of the claims people like this looking to make a quick buck are incorrect, the simple fact is that essential oils can benefit us in many ways, and in some cases, their use is backed by real science.

    One such essential oil that I'm going to speak about in this episode is lavender, which has clinical backing showing its effectiveness as an anti-anxiety tool, relaxant, and compound that can not only be used as a sleep aid, but even assist with insomnia, showing the potential power of this natural wellness compound.

    To those who are still doubters, and still may be unsure about the effectiveness of lavender oils, or essential oils in general as an effective biohacking tool, I recommend you don't take my word for it and consume some of the published data on the matter, including the studies I've linked below. Though I don't blame you if you still have some reservations when some MLM mom is telling you on Facebook her oils can make you fly.

  • James Brown is a proponent of vedic meditation, and the founder of Vedic Path Meditation (https://vedicpathmeditation.com), who teaches people from all walks of life the art of this ancient practice.   • Tim Gray is a biohacker, avid self-experimenter, and founder of the Health Optimisation Summit, as well as one of the most well-known biohackers that inhabits this ball of rock hurtling through the cosmos we all call home.   • Dr Aubrey De Grey is one of the world's leading experts in solving the problem of human ageing. A biomedical gerontologist, as well as Chief Science Officer and co-founder of the SENS Research Foundation (https://sens.org/), Dr DeGrey is at the forefront of research in solving diseases and disabilities related to human ageing, that will likely lead to us living much longer and healthier lives in the very near future.

    A few years ago, Dr De Grey put forward that the first person to live to be 1,000 years old has already likely been born, and if you're under 40 years of age now and in reasonably good health, you have a good chance of staying young and healthy forever. And while that may sound like science fiction to some, and was controversial in some fields, the fact is that as Dr De Grey will explain in this episode, we don't need to solve ageing tomorrow for this to happen — we only need to extend life by a decade or so with new advances in technology, and keep succeeding in that respect to make this a reality.

  • Feeling salty? Well unfortunately, it looks like most of us aren't salty enough when it comes to our intake of sodium, despite governments and certain organisations saying we should be eating less of it. But how correct are the current dietary guidelines when it comes to salt? And what are the dangers of not enough of it in the diet? Well, all that and more is coming up in today's episode.

    In case you weren’t aware, salt – or sodium – is an extremely important element when it comes to human biology, and without it, you’d be dead. Despite all this, sodium is something that’s received a bad rap over the last few decades, due mostly to how much salt is in the standard diet of those in many developed countries, especially in the United States. But you may be surprised to know that although America is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to recommending to its people to lower salt intake, it's by far not the biggest consumer of sodium. And the countries that are, are much healthier than America is.

    In this episode, I talk about the major myths of salt and where they came from, how inaccurate a lot of the current salt dogma is when it comes to its relation to stroke and heart disease, why sodium is so essential for our health, some of the processes salt is responsible for in the human body, why much of our salt contains harmful microplastics, the sources of salt I personally use that are not contaminated, how much salt I generally use on a daily basis, and much more.

  • Dr Shawn Baker is a medical doctor, orthopaedic surgeon, former soldier, athlete, and world-record holder, Dr Baker is known to many online as the carnivore king, as he's one of the world's leading proponents of the carnivore diet. In case you weren't aware, the carnivore diet is exactly as it sounds, where people who hold this dietary observation eat almost exclusively meat, and basically nothing else.

    The carnivore diet is gaining a lot of popularity of late, with a ton of people turning to it for a variety of reasons, though where it's seemed to have the most success is as a potential treatment for a host of autoimmune conditions. But it's also generating a lot of discussion online, as well as criticism, from those who don't believe it can be a completely healthy choice.

    In this episode, we discuss why Dr Baker turned to the carnivore diet and what were the major benefits he saw from it, what the current research is saying about being 100% carnivore and why many other people are turning to it, some information that suggests red meat can potentially prevent ageing, what some of the potential adverse side-effects could be, the ethics of being a carnivore and what kinds of meats would be preferable, the potential hazards of low-quality commercial-grade meat, the potential dangers of amyloids in industrially-raised meat, why high cholesterol can actually be beneficial in older people, some of Dr Baker's own health and performance routines that have helped him break world records after the age of 50, and much more.

    As I mentioned in yesterday's solo episode, I don't necessarily agree with the carnivore diet in many ways for my own health, though that doesn't mean there aren't people like Dr Baker in this episode who are much more informed than I am on the topic, and who have research to back up why it can be effective in many cases, or why it seems to work extremely well for many people. I do personally eat meat, though meat and other intake of animal products for me is only around 20%-30% of my diet, so I'm a far cry from being a total carnivore, but I'm also a far cry from being a vegan.

    But again, I will say that to many people listening, this episode will be somewhat controversial. However, regardless of whether you agree with Dr Baker or not, I'd only ask you to treat his knowledge and experience with as much respect as you'd treat that of any other human. If you disagree, like I do with certain parts of the carnivore diet, that's fine. As I've said many times on this podcast, not every lifestyle choice is for everyone, and everyone is free to do their own research, and make up their own mind. I also recommend you seek out Dr Baker's recent interview on the Joe Rogan podcast, as he shares much more there that I couldn't in this 30 minute episode.

  • Meat: should we eat it? I do eat meat. And while I'm lucky enough to be in the position to afford the absolute best quality animal products from creatures that have lived natural, healthy, stress-free lives, that doesn't mean I haven't questioned my desires to take myself out of the chain of death, regardless of how long killing animals has been a part of human existence. I've been asked the question many times about my consumption of meat for both ethical and health reasons, but it's the ethics part that's playing the biggest role in this episode.

    In advance, this episode of the podcast isn't like any other that's come before, as it's not necessarily only about biohacking your health when it comes to food. And while diet obviously plays a big part in human health, the simple fact is that this is also getting muddied by the fact that there are now ethical concerns when it comes to the consumption of eating animals. And not only just killing animals for food that have lived natural lives, but the fact that many people believe killing in any regard is unethical, and shouldn't be a part of humanity's food system at all.

    Regardless of what dietary observation you hold, chances are you're likely not going to agree with something I say in this episode. A part of that may be because I think we're all guilty of death and destruction to a certain degree (and yes, that means you too vegans), but also maybe because I raise some points in this episode that may be confronting to you. Or maybe, it's just because you think I have my facts wrong. All of these reasons are fine, and we don't have to agree. I may very well be wrong, as I don't profess to have all the answers.

    But in saying that, I thought it was time for me to bring this issue up, based on my current beliefs, understanding, as well as my desire to let it be known that whatever you observe when it comes to the way you eat, in the end it's your choice. However, it's also important to let it be known that ethics also don't always coincide with what's best for your health, which isn't always the easiest pill to swallow.

  • Dr Olli Sovijärvi is a medical doctor, biohacker, and leading light in the biohacking community.   • Learning is awesome, but learning fast is better. And let's face it, if we can all take shortcuts to allowing our brain to take in more information, and retain that information better, I'm sure we'll all say yes to that. And that's exactly what I'm going to cover in this episode, with a ton of biohacks to better learn languages, that I'm you can implement for almost any skill.

    This year, I've challenged myself to learn Czech, which is notorious for being one of the most difficult languages in the world, especially when it comes to European languages.   • Kayla Osterhoff is a functional health and wellness coach, and host of the Bio Curious podcast.   • Magnesium is probably not something you think about as a biohacking tool. And you may just see it as a boring mineral, not like some of the super cutting-edge biohacking stuff I've talked about previously on this podcast, or ancient herbal compounds that have scientifically-backed benefits to biohack your biology. Well, prepare to have your mind changed. At least, I hope.

    This stuff is incredibly important, however most of us don't have enough. More than half of all people in the USA are deficient, around 50% of Europeans don’t get enough, and around 40% of people in my home country of Australia don’t have adequate amounts coming in to their bodies from diet either. Basically, if you’re a human who lives in the West, there’s about a 50/50 chance that you are not getting enough of this essential mineral for human health – and it’s likely not better anywhere else in the world. And as magnesium is essential for several hundred processes in the human body, there's no doubt you should be getting enough.
