  • In this episode, we will discuss the consequences of breeding birds that have known faults. We will answer the question, “Can we create a strain with birds expressing defects and faults?” And, what are the often-underestimated determinants that defects can have on our strains?

While the practice of selective breeding has improved in the last hundred years, it's essential to acknowledge that there are many breeders who are still perpetuating faults that may someday have a detrimental effect on the breed as a whole.

As breeders, we must understand that it’s our responsibility to practice sound breeding practices, and move towards perfection, while preserving the breed. Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of this practice, and hopefully give you better insight on ways to breed and create better strains.

Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. We plan to dive deep into the world of breeding and genetics, nutrition and health management, and provide essential tips, so you too can create high quality strains. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you.

Join us on Bred to Perfection Live, Friday’s at 6pm PST or 9pm EST on YouTube, as we discuss the benefits of creating your own strain.

  • Buyers Regret vs Sellers Regret: What determines a good sell vs a bad sell - What determines a good buy vs a poor buying decision.

We’ve all experienced the pain of regret. We try to do everything possible to avoid this feeling, but we still find ourselves in situations where we wished that we would have done our homework, or more research before purchasing an item, in this case a bird. Well, this is true for the seller as well. There are times when we sell birds that we wished we would have held onto, and this could be for various reasons. We see this everywhere, and it includes the buying and selling of chickens too. We buy birds that turn out to be sick, defective, or just don’t represent their breed. Or we sell birds that we could have used to improve our own strains. In this episode, we will discuss the pros and cons of selling and buying chickens. Hopefully, this will help you in making better decisions in the future.

  • Can Conformation and Performance Ability be Improved by Infusing New Blood?

There is a big difference between a true breeder and a wannabe breeder. What’s the difference? It comes down to science vs speculation. Although speculation produces favorable results, from time to time, science produces the same results, without fail, every time. Science is right, but only succeeds if breeders are willing to accept it and use it. The problem is, most would rather avoid the science. They feel it’s too difficult to learn and use, and so they discard it as useless and irrelevant. If they only knew that this kind of thinking is holding them back, and that by embracing the science, they would save so much time and money, and they would get the results they were looking for. One of the biggest falsehoods is the idea that you can fix a trait by adding or infusing new, outside blood. Or the idea that you can infuse outside blood to refresh and strengthen a weak family. Crossbreeding to introduce new traits, and infusion to refresh a weak strain has become standard practice with most modern day breeders. The problem is, it’s a practice that doesn’t really work as advertised. Also, many believe that traits can be improved through infusion or crossbreeding, such as conformation of body and performance ability. These are two traits that cannot be improved by adding or infusing new blood. These traits require a different type of selection and breeding practice to improve, and adding outside blood is the wrong approach. It’s our hope that we can change your perception about the science of breeding, and encourage you to change your practice as well. You are only going to improve your breeding, when you can accept the science.

  • Why It’s Good To Stay As Close To Mother Nature As Possible.

Breeding like Mother Nature involves doing things that simulate what Mother Nature does in the wild. This includes breeding and selection, culling the weak, allowing the right organisms to reproduce and evolve, while preserving their natural instincts, and adapting to their environmental factors. By following Mothers Nature's Way, it allows us to create healthy, well-bred strains that can last many generations. It allows us to actually sculpt and mold our birds into the forms and functions that we desire, and create fowl that can perform the task for which they were bred. We see the opposite of this when breeders fight or work against Mother Nature. Yes, the contrast is huge. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you.

  • Why Our Birds Need Extra Attention at this Time of Year

When do our birds require the utmost care and consideration? The answer is during the molt. This crucial period is marked by significant stress as birds undergo a complex process of feather renewal, muscle replenishment, and bone repair. Both cocks and hens experience this challenging phase, making it an essential aspect of their overall health.

While many view molting as a negative phase, it actually presents an opportunity for improvement. As a breeder, it’s vital to understand how to navigate the molt effectively and use it to your advantage. A common pitfall for breeders is failing to grasp the nuances of the molt, which can hinder efforts to create, improve, and maintain a robust strain.

Proper management of the molt is crucial; neglecting this process can significantly impact the upcoming breeding season and the quality of offspring. Join us as we delve into the intricacies of the molting season and explore strategies for achieving optimal results.

  • This is an interview I did with Brian Reeder, on April 2, 2023. Since then, we did 4 more interviews, discussing the many aspects of chicken genetics and color of plumage. All these interviews will be available for our members of the Breeders Academy.

The first interview was originally a 5 hour talk, and we talked about:

Inbreeding and Hybrid Vigor Quantitative Inheritance and Polygenic Traits The importance of Autosomal Pheomelanin The Breeding and Genetics of Whites and Progressive White The Breeding of Blues and Red Piles And so much more.

Although the majority of this discussion was made available to our members of the Breeders Academy, we are making this segment on “The Origins of the Domestic Chicken” available for you, our listeners.

How did this conversation happen? One of my members of The Breeders Academy contacted Brian, and asked if he was interested in doing a show with me on poultry genetics, and color genetics, and he said yes. So I reached out to Brian, to set up an interview, and this is a small portion of that recording.

Understand that this recording was not originally intended for the public. Brian and me were just having fun talking chickens and genetics, and geeking out and sharing information. Letting out this particular phone call recording to the public was a total afterthought. The quality of this recording is a bit rough, but the upcoming episodes on genetics are much better.

Brian Reeder is a well known writer on poultry, and has done extensive research on Domestic Fowl and their Genetics. His books and articles have been based upon his experiences working with Domestic Fowl. And through the years he has collected important data, data that we can use today, in breeding and perpetuating higher quality fowl. He is also the author of two books on poultry genetics, “An Introduction to Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl” and “An Introduction to Form and Feathering of the Domestic Fowl.”

With Brian's permission, I am making this segment of the recording (The Origins of the Domestic Chicken) available to our listeners. There’s a lot of great information in this recording that I know you will enjoy and learn from. I learned a lot too. In fact, Brian changed many of my old paradigms.

Don’t miss out on this essential episode!

So, sit back, take notes and enjoy the show with Brian Reeder.

We will include links to his website, and the books he has written, in the show notes. His website on poultry is found at http://www.brianreederbreeder.blogspot.com .

His books on poultry genetics are both easily accessible through Amazon.
