Episodes

  • Merry Christmas everyone!

'Tis the season to be merry and treat yourselves, so this week we've given ourselves a week away from the list and instead we're talking about games with a Christmas theme, or a Christmas element... it's all quite vague but I think it's become apparent over the past year and a half that we wouldn't have it any other way!

We've got our Naughty and Nice lists to go through, so grab a tub of Roses (not Quality Street), a big lump of cheese (not a mince pie) a generous glass full of Snowball (definitely NOT Eggnog!) and get cosy as we make your festive season merry and bright!

    Enjoy!

    **Bucket List Reviews**

You may have heard in the episode that we are working on a website where we will have WRITTEN content to accompany our podcasts!

Unfortunately issues with the server where we built the website have delayed the launch, but we're hopeful it will be ready to go by the New Year so keep an eye on our Social Media pages!

  • It might be our most 'EXPLOSIVE' episode yet as we take a look at Super Bomberman R!

Does it set off Jay's already short fuse, or do we think it's 'the bomb'? One thing's for sure, it can't be as bad as Bomberman: Act Zero.

We also discuss some of the nominees for this years Game Awards and accidentally reveal how we completely missed the mark with last year's surprise indie hit!

    Enjoy!

In this episode we discussed the Couch Console, which Couch Console were kind enough to send us to try out!

We're keen to be completely transparent when it comes to this kind of thing, and we wouldn't promote a product and recommend people buy it unless we would do so ourselves. The Pokemon Mystery Boxes we have covered previously are a great example, where the commission available was

Not only do we recommend the Couch Console, but we genuinely do use them every time we have a gaming session.

If you'd like to check them out and grab one for the gamer in your life... or treat yourself (go on, you deserve it!) you can visit www.couchconsole.com!

  • We're crashing back into a regular schedule by taking a look at two stone-cold Playstation classics, remastered for a new generation!

Yes, in this episode we're revisiting Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, but specifically their respective Trilogy remasters!

Do you prefer the slightly unhinged bandicoot, or the plucky young purple dragon? We discuss our favourites, and whether the remasters help or hinder their franchises.

We also have some 'Milking It' news, and we discuss the thorny subject of Bioware allowing players to select their pronouns in the latest Dragon Age Game. There have actually been developments in this story since we recorded, which we will address in the NEXT episode!

But until then, grab your Aku Aku mask, shut out the egg thieves, and enjoy!

  • We're back to Pokemon again as we look at a selection of games from the famous Nintendo franchise!

Is Pokemon Yellow just a shameless cash in? Does it differ from Red and Blue? Is Pokemon Go worse than having a job? Why did people walk into a lake en-masse?

Find out the answers to all these questions and more. Plus we have Milking It, and some updates about what is next for the Podcast!

Please bare in mind we recorded this episode over a month ago, so some of the news is a little bit out of date...

  • oOOOOoooOOoo! It's our second Halloween and that means another spooky-scary-special!

Yes, we're fashionably late this year thanks to some technical issues when putting the episode together, but hopefully you're all still in the mood for a creepy video game or two!

No games from the list this time, just discussions about horrifying Remakes, overpriced beat-em-ups, games that really need not exist and a couple of gems that are now more easily accessible than ever!

Oh and Jay plays and reviews The Quiet Place game... a stealth based horror... it doesn't take a mad scientist to work out how that went!

    Enjoy!

  • Because we know you love a good rant, this episode we're looking at the worst games we've ever paid cold, hard cash for.

The beeping machine went into overdrive on this one, with a whopping 44 beeps! However if you want to hear it in it's (almost) completely uncensored form, you can head to www.patreon.com/bucketlistgamers and subscribe to any tier Bucket Kicker and above!

We did have to censor one bit right at the end, but if you knew what was said... you'd understand why!

Warning for headphone users too, there is some game audio spliced in and it's quite frankly horrific.

    Enjoy!

  • That's right, this bumper episode sees us look at FIVE games! Why? Because we didn't think we had much to say about them.

As it transpires, we did... and that's why this episode is almost an hour and a half long! BUT even though the games might be fodder, the episode isn't!

Whether it's churning out the same thing every year, making something more complicated than it needed to be, failing to live up to potential, having no potential in the first place or ruining people's lives through the medium of song... we discuss the lot!

    Enjoy!

Psst! We also have some new merch dropping very soon that is tied to this episode, so be sure to check out our Merch link on the website for more info!

  • On this episode of the Bucket List Gamers we're once again addressing childhood trauma, as we discuss 1996's PS1 'classic' PaRappa the Rapper.

Touted as the first true rhythm game, PaRappa the Rapper sees a paper thin dog rap his way through five gruelling levels in order to impress a sentient Sunflower called Sunny Funny.

Believe us when we tell you this BARELY scrapes the surface of just how weird this game truly is... but is it any good?

We also talk about the latest big announcement from Sony, and whether the Quiddich game is any good (spoilers... it isn't.)

    Enjoy!

  • Damn you to Hades!

Prior to September of 2020 that would have been a worrying phrase to hear, but now I don't think we'd mind it!

Yes, this episode we are talking about SuperGiant Games Hades (and also Hades 2 quite a lot, actually!)

Described on Steam as 'a god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler' (so that settles the lite/like debate) players take on the role of Zagreus, son of the titular Hades, a teenager hell-bent on escaping the underworld and making it to the surface to talk to his mother.

Does it deserve a spot on the pantheon of the gods, or is the murky underworld actually where it deserves to reside?

Take a listen and find out! Plus we talk briefly about the Concord disaster, and how it is possible for a game to fail so spectacularly.

    Enjoy!

  • Cowabunga Dudes!

This episode we've grabbed our Bo Staffs, Sai's and Nunchakus, donned our favourite colour masks and dived head-first into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Shredder's Revenge!

Is Shredder's Revenge the perfect homage to the TMNT arcade games of old, or is it a shameless, cheap cash-in looking to rake in money based purely on nostalgia? You'll have to listen to find out.

Plus we talk a little about Gamescom, and you can find out which game Eddie likens to a Creme Egg wrapped in damp tissue paper...

Who's for a slice of Pizza?!

    Enjoy!

  • That's right, in this episode we'll teach you how to do... precisely none of those things!

We will discuss the 2023 smash hit Hogwarts Legacy though, as well as more 'Milking It', and review of a film we haven't even seen (and have no intention of doing so.)

Plus a few of the usual tangents and technical difficulties thrown in for good measure... it wouldn't be the Bucket List Gamers podcast without them!

  • This episode we bring back memories of the Paris Olympic Games by discussing Mario & Sonic's various adventures at the world's most prestigious sporting event! Oh, and the gaming phenomenon that is Wii Sports.

THE two most iconic gaming mascots of all time finally brought together in a single title... and it's a button mashing Olympic crossover? Was it a waste, or did it do something truly special?

Wii Sports took the world by storm when it launched as a pack-in title for the Nintendo Wii, and legend has it grannies up and down the country are still playing it to this day, but what made it SO bloody popular?

Plus we have the triumphant return of 'Milking It', and Eddie talks about Bungees financial woes.

    Enjoy!

  • Grab your shovels and your watering cans!

This episode we are discussing two life simulators that approach the genre from very different angles, in Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley!

Animal Crossing is the quintessential cutesy Nintendo time-sink, where you wile away the hours catching bugs, fishing, gardening, decorating and paying off crippling amounts of debt to a shifty looking racoon... but is it actually any fun, or more of an obligation?

Stardew Valley is lauded for its laid back gameplay style, freedom of choice and gorgeous soundtrack, but what is it that keeps players returning to their farms for more?

Plus we introduce a new feature, which goes horribly wrong in its debut week as Jay falls victim to clickbaiting!

All in all, par for the course then!

    **Trigger Warning**

Please be aware that we briefly discuss the subject of suicide in this episode which may be triggering for some listeners.

  • This episode we dig into the history of The Last Guardian! First announced in 2009, with work having started in 2007, it took NINE whole years and a whole change in console generation for Trico and The Boy's story to come to fruition.

Did the delay make for a much-improved experience, or did Team ICO end up with a case of the 'Duke Nukems'?

    Listen in and find out!

We also talk about the Odyssey Gaming Festival that recently took place in Harrogate, how it went down, and the awesome people we met there!

    Enjoy!

  • This episode we take a look at not one, not two... but THREE Sonic games from the new list, in the form of Sonic 1, Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces!

Is Sonic Forces as BAD as everyone says it is? Is Sonic Generations as GOOD as people claim? There's only one way to find out... well, there's probably quite a few ways to find out, but you can just listen to this episode seeing as you're already here.

We also discuss some recent announcements in the gaming world, discuss Microsoft's upcoming 'modular controller', and ponder the intricacies of playing Quiddich in real life.

Due to schedules being shuffled around we actually recorded this episode a month or so ago, so if some of the references seem a little out of date that's why!

    Still, enjoy!!

  • It's the first DLC Episode of the new series!

Teased in the previous episode, and inspired by our love for Dave the Diver, we discuss Roguelikes and Roguelites... although we're still not 100% on the difference.

A new list episode is coming soon, but for now treat yourself to some of Bancho's primest Sushi and enjoy!

  • We're back with episode 2 (NOT Episode 1) of the new Season of Bucket List Gamers.

This time we're talking about Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for Nintendo Gamecube, and it's recent remaster on the Nintendo Switch. Battle your way through the eponymous Thousand Year Door in this RPG-Lite classic starring everyone's favourite chubby Italian plumber.

We also discuss the potential for adverts in video games, and what constitutes a good Special Edition. Plus find out how Jay ended up £250 out of pocket thanks to Nordic Germans.

Addressing the elephant in the room... yes, this was SUPPOSED to be episode 1, so just pretend we're making sense when you listen! A few of the bits of info are slightly out of date as a result too!

For example, the Dave the Diver episode we mention at the end is ALREADY available on Patreon, so if you'd like to listen to that now you can find more details about it over there!

Take a moment to drink in that title card too, it might be our favourite one yet!

  • That's right, we're back with Season 2!

After a short hiatus to recharge the batteries (and focus a little on our sister podcast The Bucket List Board Gamers) we have returned with a NEW book, a new focus... some might say a new purpose in life!

This time we are looking at The Best. The Greatest. The Most Awesome, and we've kicked off with one that probably doesn't fit into any of those three categories; Among Us.

Trust us, it wasn't our first choice (as evidenced by the fact this is actually the THIRD episode we have recorded for Season 2) but this week saw a Nintendo Direct take place, and we enjoyed talking about the last one so much we picked a game we didn't have much to say about, just so we could do this instead.

So brace yourself for an hour and 20 minutes of inane rambling! Enjoy!

If you'd like to check out the Odyssey Gaming Festival that WE will be attending on the 6th and 7th July, take a look at their website below for more information on what will be there and how to get tickets!

  • It's the end of an Era. The end of a Book. The end of... Season 1 of the Bucket List Gamers!

Yes, after 54 long episodes we have finally discussed ALL 100 Games to Play Before You Die (according to Retro Gamer Magazine), and we're rounding it off with Super Mario World (1).

I mean, it had to be, didn't it?

Do you know the enemies from Super Mario World? How about the Bosses? No? Well, it's evident after recording this episode that we don't either, but we're here to give our relatively uneducated opinion anyway!

Plus we talk about Dave the Diver, and what's to come in Season 2!

  • We're so close to the end of the Retro Gamers '100 Games to Play Before You Die' list we can almost taste it!

This episode we're discussing the penultimate game in the list, which is 2013's The Last of Us (26).

Perhaps more cinematic experience than fully fledged game, Jay and Eddie discuss Naughty Dog's zombie-esque magnum opus... and they've actually both played it for a change!

Sooo... tape up a few shivs, throw some nails in an old tin can, pour yourself a glass of vodka then stuff a rag in the neck of the bottle, and most importantly sit back, relax and enjoy the Second to Last of Us in Season 1!
