  • Welcome back to another week of Calling in Sick! The past two episodes were all about setting boundaries with ourselves so we can choose joy more often. And this week? Let’s just say I’m still paying off my Spoonie Jail invoice… and unfortunately, there’s no early release for good behavior. 😅

When flare days stretch into flare weeks (or months), it starts to feel like you’re living the same day over and over again. I call it the Chronic Illness Groundhog Day effect — and I know I’m not alone.

    This week, I’m breaking down:
🧠 Why time gets weird when you're sick (yep, there's actual neuroscience behind it)
😵‍💫 The “oops-I-had-fun” crash cycle + how to set better boundaries with yourself
🌟 My go-to brain hack to feel momentum—even from bed (escape the loop!)
✨ A peek into my new “Come With Me” series for chronic-illness-friendly escapes

Whether you’re stuck on the couch or just tired of feeling stuck, this convo is your permission slip to reclaim time, joy, and a little sparkle!

Thanks for Calling in Sick with me again!

    xx, Alex

  • Last week, we talked about giving ourselves permission to have fun — but this week? We’re swinging the pendulum back the other way. Because I made zero adjustments and just had fun… which was great until it wasn’t. Truth is, one of the hardest people to set boundaries with is actually ourselves.

In this episode, I talk through what it looks like to chase joy, crash hard, and try to recover without beating yourself up. Spoiler alert: I’m recording this after two straight days of IVIG, so I’m right in the thick of it.

    Here’s what we get into:
🚷 Why we need to set boundaries with ourselves to make life sustainable
🧳 The “oops I had fun and now I’m in spoon jail” cycle
🌿 Ottine road trips, mineral springs, and my new “Come With Me” content series
🪑 The adjustments I’m making in real time

This one’s for the people who are 0 or 100, all or nothing, go-go-go until your joints give out. You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re just human — and that’s more than enough.

Thanks for Calling in Sick with me, again 💛
    xx,
    Alex

  • I’m back on the mic this week after a little solo pod pause — and I’m kicking things off with something I’ve been thinking about (and living) a lot lately: joy guilt. You know that old rule: “If you’re too sick to go to school, you’re too sick to have fun?” Yeah, that one. Turns out, it doesn’t translate to life with chronic illness. But we still carry it — and it quietly shapes how we see ourselves, how we mask, and how we justify joy when we’re supposed to be struggling. In this episode, I dig into:💭 Why we fear being seen laughing or “doing too well”😰 The guilt spiral when symptoms shift — and the fear of not being believed🎭 How chronic illness can force us to perform misery to protect our empathy🔥 The lies we were taught about rest, pain, and productivity🩵 And the truth: Joy is not a betrayal. It’s part of the healingYou don’t need to earn your joy. You don’t have to be falling apart to rest. You are not required to apologize for your life, your sparkle, or your softness. So f*@k it — I’m having fun. And I hope you will too. Thanks for Calling in Sick with me 💛xx,Alex💬 Comment : Have you ever felt like you had to downplay your joy just to be taken seriously?TIMESTAMPS:TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 Welcome back to Calling In Sick! • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the one and only, Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer — who you might know from her starting role in Pretty Little Liars or Inherent Vice. Today, Sasha spends her time as an actor, podcaster, founder, advocate, and fellow chronic illness warrior. We sat down and talked about her real life plot twist: getting diagnosed with PCOS and epilepsy, navigating autoimmune symptoms, and redefining herself while the world was watching.

We also chat:🎥 What it was like getting sick in the public eye, without a formal diagnosis🗞 The internet’s reaction to body changes — and reclaiming the narrative👶 Motherhood, identity shifts, and the “new you” that chronic illness brings💬 The mantras, mindsets & moments that get her through the hard stuff

Sasha shares her raw truth about rebuilding trust with her body, the hardest lessons she’s learned, and the surprising silver linings she’s found along the way. Whether you're in the thick of chasing a diagnosis or learning to live life on new terms, this episode is a gentle reminder: you are not alone, and healing doesn’t mean going back — it means going forward as someone new.

Thanks for Calling in Sick with us 💛xx,Alex

  • This week on Calling in Sick, we’re getting grounded, energized, and totally fascinated by the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I’m joined by Dr. Jennifer Ashby — a TCM doctor at UCSF — to explore the intersection of Eastern and Western care for whole-person healing.

We get into the foundational teachings of TCM, the biggest surprises patients experience when they first try it, and how it’s being used right now in hospital settings like UCSF (yes, really!!).

    We also talk:

📣 Why TCM is so much more than acupuncture & herbs

🧠 The reason why TCM doesn’t separate mind, body & spirit

🌊 Micro-changes that have macro impacts to our health

📦 Why what you think impacts how you feel

Whether you’re new to holistic wellness or just tired of treating symptoms without addressing the why — this one’s full of grounding insight, accessible tools, and (as always) a little cozy chaos. Extra benefit... Dr. Ashby is one of the most relaxing humans I've had the pleasure of being around... she is Xanax in human form.

Thanks for Calling In Sick with us 💛

He try to keep me emotionally grounded while I spiral through a whirlwind of updates. This episode is cozy chaos. ✈️ My first solo trip in years (and why it lowkey changed me)
    🧠 A raw mental health check-in post-trial

  • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by Dr. Preston Roche—a psychiatry resident, former Air Force Academy track athlete, and viral medical content creator known as  ⁨@itspresro⁩ . Preston brings a blend of clinical insight and personal vulnerability and I share my experience with acute and chronic pain (including how I think about and manage CRPS). Together, we dive into the messy, misunderstood world of chronic pain, mental health, and medical bias.

    In this episode, we talk:

🧠 How today’s doctors learn about pain (chronic and acute), and how that compares to real life

📉 Why chronic pain can be dismissed in ER or hospital settings

🥼 Why patients struggle with seeking pain relief

💛 How to advocate for yourself and your pain (and why certain phrases may be working AGAINST you!)

💊 What pain relief options can we have in our toolbox?

  • This week on Calling in Sick, we’re diving deep into a condition that’s often misunderstood, minimized, or completely missed: endometriosis. I’m joined by the wonderful Autumn Weimann (@grlwithbangs)—naturopathic doctor (@period.prep), clean beauty founder (@Banginhair.shop), and advocate for body-literate healing.

Autumn shares her powerful story of navigating chronic pain and years of unanswered questions before being diagnosed with endometriosis, and taking her healing into her own hands. We trace her journey from feeling unheard in medical offices to becoming her own best advocate, healer, and educator.

    In this episode, we talk:
🩸 What endometriosis actually feels like (and why it’s so often missed)
💔 The emotional toll of misdiagnosis and mistrust in your body
🌿 Why Autumn pivoted into naturopathic medicine
💄 Launching a clean beauty brand grounded in hormone health
🧠 Reconnecting with your body when it’s been the source of so much pain

Whether you’ve experienced chronic pain or just want to better understand your body, this episode is a must-listen. You deserve care that believes you, honors your intuition, and supports your whole self.

Thanks for Calling in Sick with us this week 💛
    xx,Alex

  • This week on Calling in Sick, things are a little different — and a little chaotic. I was too discombobulated to record a solo episode, so Cooper (my husband) hopped on the mic with me. We laughed, we spiraled, and then we got real about why life has felt so hard lately:

In this week’s episode, we talk:
    💥 A nasty IVIG reaction
    🚑 A surprise ER trip
    🛑 A home invasion
💉 Starting a new oral chemo
    🏡 Family visiting
🫠 And feeling... not like myself at all

We talk about what it’s like when everything hits at once, and how chronic illness can make navigating life with a chronic illness that much harder. Even though it’s been overwhelming (to put it lightly), there’s something comforting about saying it all out loud — and laughing through the absurdity when we can. This episode is for anyone who feels like they’re in survival mode and missing the person they used to be. You’re not broken. You’re carrying more than most people can even imagine.

Thanks for Calling in Sick with us this week!
    xx,
    Alex & Saint Coop

  • Hey sweet friends—no full episode this week, just a short 10-minute update from me. Between a rough IVIG reaction, an unexpected ER trip, and a literal attempted home invasion (yes, really), I’m throwing it back to a past episodes: Processing Your Chronic Illness—because wow, I need to listen to this one this week too!!

This week on Calling in Sick, I’m diving into something that doesn’t get talked about enough: the identity shift that happens when you're living with a chronic illness — whether you have an official diagnosis or not.

There’s a specific kind of grief that comes from realizing you're no longer the person you once were.
The person who had endless energy.
The person who didn’t have to think twice about plans, goals, or dreams.
The person who didn’t wonder, "Do I look sick enough for people to take me seriously?"

In this solo episode, I’m opening up about:
💭 How chronic illness impacts your sense of self (even before a diagnosis)
⚡ Why comparison — to others and to your old self — can feel so brutal
🩺 The silent pressure to “look” sick enough for care
🧠 How processing a chronic illness mirrors the stages of grief
📚 Plus: My tips, tricks, and personal mindset shifts that have helped me find myself again

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, "I don’t even recognize my life anymore," — this one’s for you. You are not alone in this identity shift. You are not broken. You are just becoming someone new.

Thanks for Calling in Sick with me again — xx, Alex 💛

  • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m getting real about something I never thought I’d question: Am I still ambitious?

There was a time when I crushed my to-do list before lunch, never let an email sit unanswered, and found purpose in being productive. But now? I procrastinate. I forget things. I carry a running to-do list that I never finish. And between the brain fog, pain, meds, and fatigue… I started to wonder if I’d lost my drive entirely. But then it hit me… maybe ambition just looks different now.

In this solo episode, I’m opening up about:
💭 What it’s like to lose your “high-functioning” self
💊 The quiet shame of feeling dulled by meds
🔥 How chronic illness reroutes your ambition from speed to survival
🌱 Why softness, slowness, and intention might be the new success
📺 Plus: My current comfort-watch in the One Brain Cell segment (spoiler: it’s called warm hug in TV form)

This one is for anyone navigating big identity shifts—especially if you’ve had to ask yourself: “Who am I without the hustle?” My answer? Darling... you’re not behind. You’re becoming.

    xx,
    Alex 💛

  • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the incredible Kwame Appiah—someone you might recognize from Love Is Blind (Season 4), but today, we’re going far deeper than reality TV.

Kwame opens up about his real-life health journey: the early signs he ignored, the emotional toll of not having answers, and what it meant to finally get a diagnosis—and then face the hard work of rebuilding from there. We talk about the frustrations of navigating a broken healthcare system, the grief and grit that come wit h chronic illness, and how healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, relational, and deeply personal. My favorite part? Kwame’s take on gratitude, growth, and positivity. We also dive into how illness reshapes not just our bodies, but our relationships—with others and with ourselves.

    In this episode, we unpack:
⚡️ The moment Kwame knew he couldn’t keep ignoring his body
🌀 The emotional rollercoaster of chasing a diagnosis
💬 How his relationship with Chelsea evolved through it all
🧠 The shift from shame to self-trust
📺 Plus: our favorite shows in this week’s One Brain Cell segment (spoiler: we couldn’t pick just one)

This episode is vulnerable, honest, and a reminder that chronic illness doesn’t define you—but it can transform you.

    As always, sending my love!
    xx,
    Alex 💛

  • This week on Calling in Sick, we’re talking about something that’s both terrifying and beautiful: how to make new friends when you’re chronically ill. Let’s be real—chronic illness changes your social life. While some relationships run the distance, there are far too many that end… some fade out, some end loudly and some just stop making sense. But as painful as that can be, it also creates space. Space for people who get it. Who don’t need explanations. Who meet you where you are now.

    In this episode, I’m unpacking:
🌿 How chronic illness can be a filter for real, aligned friendships
    💔 Why losing friends isn’t always a failure—it’s often a shift
✨ How to make new friends that actually work for your energy, needs, and lifestyle
🧃 What “low-spoon friendship” looks like and why it’s actually magic
📱 Where to find spoonie friends who get you

This isn’t just about friendship breakups—it’s about friendship breakthroughs.

Sending love (and new friend energy)!
    xx,
    Alex 💛

  • This week on Calling in Sick, we’re talking about one of the most underrated tools in the chronic illness toolbox: the intentional duvet day. If you’ve ever felt guilty for resting, questioned if you're "sick enough" to slow down, or struggled to explain why you need a full day in bed after a good day—this episode is for you. I unpack why these days are essential for long-term management (not lazy days!), how to spot your “check engine lights” before a crash, and how I’ve learned to communicate my need for deep rest without feeling like a burden. So tune in to hear:✨ My favorite Duvet Day skincare & hydration essentials (hello dewy skin girlies!)🛏️ What a Duvet Day actually is (and how to make it restorative, not just reactive)🎁 Why receiving care is not a weakness—and how to reframe the guilt💡 How to explain your needs to others using Spoon Theory & the Stoplight Framework📺 One Brain Cell rec of the week: Drive to Survive and why I’m suddenly a motorsport girlie nowFor this week, put your latest hyper-fixation during duvet days in the comments section!! • This week on Calling in Sick, we’re diving deep into a topic that I think so many of us—especially those with chronic illness—struggle with: the link between productivity and self-worth. I’ll be honest, old habits die hard, and my first Monday back after treatment? Yeah… I went full steam ahead. And guess what? It didn’t go well. But that got me thinking: why is it so hard to detach my value from what I do? Why does rest feel like failure, even when I know better?

So, in this episode, I’m unpacking:
🔥 The cycle of overwork, crashing, and repeat (why do we do this?!)
⚖️ Why chronic illness makes productivity so complicated (and what we can do about it)
🧠 The identity shift of redefining success

I want to hear from you! Drop a comment:💬 What’s one "glimmer" from your week that helped shift how you view self-worth?

  • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m getting real about the mental gymnastics of navigating chronic illness—especially when you're constantly balancing fear of flaring, fear of failing, and the never-ending cycle of medical uncertainty.

February was a lot, even for a girl who’s been sick her whole life. From 2 rounds of chemotherapy, to surgery, to 5 days of IVIG, to balancing work and content creation while managing life, this month really put my “pivoting” skills to the test. And that got me thinking…How do we live fully while managing predictable unpredictability? How do we take risks when we know there’s a chance our bodies might betray us?

So, in this episode, I’m sharing:
🩺 How I handled IVIG & what I did differently this time
⚖️ My “guardrails” for protecting my body & energy
😰 The fine line between being cautious vs. being held back by fear

  • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m taking you inside my latest surgery—my second endometriosis excision surgery. If you’ve been through it, you know: endo surgery is no joke. From a misdiagnosed journey to deciding on surgery (again) to an absolutely chaotic post-op appointment… this episode is full of everything that happened, and everything I wish I knew going in.

    In this episode, I’m sharing:
🩺 How I got diagnosed & why I decided to have surgery (again)
🔪 The download on the five different types of endometriosis surgery options
😖 What endometriosis surgery & recovery REALLY feel like
🩹 The worst parts & how I managed pain
⚠️ The red flags at my post-op appointment (and why I chose NOT to advocate for myself this time)

Because I need to feel not so alone in the fact I minimize some things about my health to just survive… I’d love for y’all to comment one thing you minimize about YOUR health that is actually a huge deal.

    As always, sending love!

  • This week on Calling in Sick, I’m getting real about where I’m at with my health right now. To be honest, I’ve been flaring for almost a year, stuck in survival mode, and have been pushing through without picking my head up to see how bad things have gotten… again. I’m realizing that:

💥 Checking myself & my health status
💊 My new treatment plan… and how I feel about it shifting (again)
🩺 Making medical decisions today for our next chapter & future family
⏳ Gentle reminders for when it feels impossible to manage the chronic illness life
❤️‍🩹 The download on my SECOND endometriosis excision surgery

I’m opening up about how I’ve been pushing through and ignoring my body’s warning signs, and now, I’m facing the reality of what needs to change. Big shifts are ahead—from medications and surgeries to major lifestyle adjustments. But strangely, talking about it all feels like a reset—a chance to commit fully to this next chapter and finally start moving forward.

If you’ve ever felt stuck between pushing forward and accepting your reality, this episode is for you. Let’s talk about the uncertainty, the fear, and the hope—because I know I’m not the only one navigating this.

  • This week on Calling in Sick, we’re tackling something that makes every chronic illness patient’s life harder—medical bills. The system is confusing, overwhelming, and expensive—and let’s be real, most of us just swipe our card and hope for the best. But what if I told you that hospitals and insurance companies are overcharging you—constantly? That’s why I’m sitting down with Daniel Lynch, co-founder of Medical Billing Gurus, to break down:

💰 The #1 mistake people make when they get a medical bill
🚨 How to fight back against surprise charges & denials
📉 How to negotiate your bill (yes, you CAN lower it!)
🧾 Why the same procedure can cost $500 or $5,000—depending on who’s paying

If you’ve ever looked at a medical bill and thought, WTF is this?, this episode is for you. Knowledge is power—and this conversation will help you pick the right insurance plan for you, and potentially save you thousands.

Have you ever fought a medical bill and won? Drop your story in the comments or DM me on IG (@callinginsickpod)!
