The final episode of Can We Cult? We love all of you!
-
Here we go -- Waco part two! We did our best to pull from multiple sources, and like we said last week - we have NEVER been so torn over a story on this show. It's heavy and stressful and sad and confusing. We hope we do some of it justice as Meagan tells us what happened on the 51st day of the siege, and the dramatic investigations that came after.
For our final, 60th episode, we are going to be thanking you, telling stories, and wrapping up this awesome experience. We would love to hear from you! If you have a cult/fringe group/charasmatic leader that you've interacted with - tell us about it! If you have stories, thoughts, jokes, whatever -- send it to us at canwecult at gmail. We want to include it all in our last show!
We love you! -

Y’all voted. We watched a lot of documentaries, read a lot of conspiracy theories, dove into government investigations, and here we are: Waco.
This week, Allie talks to us about the creation of the Branch Davidians, the rise of David Koresh, and the first 50 days of the Waco siege. We’ve never been more conflicted about any group we’ve discussed.
Thanks again for all of your love and support around our decision to end CWC. Next week we have part two, and the week after that we will bring you our final, 60th episode! We love you and we look forward to spending the next few weeks with you! -
We’re not going to lie to you - this week starts out with a fairly big bomb dropped. After many attempts at starting the episode we just had to blurt it out: Can We Cult is coming to an end after a year and a half of horrifying bliss. However - we have four more episodes coming your way before we say goodbye!
This week, Allie introduces us to the first leader named “Zak” that we’ve ever discussed, whose Sears home in Ohio is the stuff of early twenties dreams. Then, Meg tells us about a Russian cartoon cult that may or may not be the longest troll ever, and she can’t even figure it out. Help!
We are excited to bring you a two-parter on a beast of a cult in the coming weeks, and a final goodbye episode after that! Check our Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for upcoming polls to help us pick our final group! We love you and we look forward to spending the next month with you! -
We’re back to our regularly structured tapings, but we’ve been left alone again. Yikes! We had only one software hiccup amidst the heat wave, but thanks to some cold packs placed strategically, we got on with the show. This week, Allie debunks some beliefs about the Quiverfull Movement and Meg lightens things up with the carbohydrate-based god of our dreams.

This week we have part two of our coverage of Warren Jeffs, starting at around 2004 when he was arrested outside of Las Vegas. If you haven’t listened to last week’s, please do that!
We highly recommend the documentary Prophet’s Prey, which we watched together. It can be rented on iTunes and YouTube! We also HIGHLY recommend going to visit our friends at Getting Off Podcast, who just happened to run a Jeffs two-parter on the same weeks as us. Their brilliant legal minds do things we simply can’t, and dive into some law that is both fascinating and upsetting.
We will see you next week for a standard episode and thank you so much for the support with our last two two-parters!

This is the first in a two-part episode on Warren Jeffs and — wow, is it sad. This week Allie talks about the societal impact of polygamy, the rise of FLDS, Warren Jeffs, and lead up to charges filed against him in 2004.
Allie references this Atlantic article regarding the societal impact of polygamy and it’s a really important read: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2006/04/one-man-many-wives-big-problems/304829/

We are so glad that so many folks liked hearing last week’s coverage of WBC, and we are thrilled to have this week’s episode go live. This week we chat with listener and friend of the show, Cat, about her experience growing up among The Phelps Family, and her current experience working across the street from the main WBC compound. We ask her lots of dumb questions and she totally allows it!
We should also mention that we recorded this weeks ago, so we heard about her organization’s upcoming museum before y’all did! Oh snap!

After contemplating auditioning for a Disney series, it’s a full-blown lady double team! For the first of a two part focus on the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, MK and Allie talk about the rise of Fred Phelps, the beliefs of the Church, and some of the inside info former members have shared.
Next week, you’ll hear an interview we did with a listener and great human, Cat Jones, about her experience growing up among The Phelps Family, and her current experience working across the street from the main WBC compound. Stay tuned!

First of all, we want to apologize for our horribly embarrassing Trixie Mattel flub last week. Let’s get that out of the way. We are now in the FIRST episode of the year A.T. (After Trixie)! Thanks for being with us!
Allie starts us off with The Temple of the True Inner Light, which is mainly focused on tripping their nards off with the body of Christ, and making terrible websites (check it here … http://psychede.tripod.com/). Meg, as per usual, brings the room down by talking about The Word of Life Christian Center in New York, and the death of Lucas Leonard.

Episode 50?! Seriously?! My god! This week we spend some time reminiscing, and then we double team “I AM Activity” aka "Saint Germain Foundation"! This group is the inspiration for many groups we’ve talked about before (Church Universal Triumphant, anyone?!), had some wild ass plans for the afterlife, and their trip to the Supreme Court is pretty iconic.
Thank you for 50 episodes, and all the love. We adore you!

We faced many tests during this recording session: our internet was out, our pollen count was in the 500s, and the neighbors decided to spray their compost bins while we record BUT we tried to keep it light in comparison to last week and we hope you enjoy! Grab you some Benadryl!
Allie starts out by giving us a recap on everyone’s favorite female-branding sex cult, NXIVM, and it’s former teen star/sadist representative, Allison Mack. Meagan then tell some of us youngsters about The Merry Pranksters, whose LSD trip to NYC may have been the inspiration for iconic cult imagery.

After a recap of their best (read: worst) early-2000s fashion, and a short history of the infamous store Gadzooks, we get into the cults. This week was terribly depressing, so we’re sorry about this one; grab a snack and a cozy blanket!
Allie starts out by telling us about the $700 jacket of our dreams, created by anti-Catholic cult leader Tony Alamo. Meagan then brings it down further with the story of The Goler Clan, a community in the Canadian mountains whose generations of isolation and incest were uncovered in the 1980s.

After a bit too much rose (it’s nearly summer, damn it!) and gushing about the royal wedding, and how much we love all of you, we get to some cults! First, Allie tells us all about the Church of the SubGenius, which might be the greatest cult-adjacent trolling of all time. We love a good Rick Roll, and Meg gets really confused. In retaliation, Meagan brings us a VERY depressing story about a sub-sect of the already cult-like Grail Movement, which led to the prosecution of multiple people for child abuse and assault. What a treat for the ears!

This week, we start right off with a delightful discussion about the ways we would like to die. Then it’s off to the races with a chat about Mother’s Day, Judge Judy’s big butt, and the best part of donating to charity!
When we get into the juicy stuff, Allie tells us the story of the Pana-Wave Laboratory in Japan, led by Yuko Chino, and completely clad in what look to be costumes for extras on the set of American Horror Story: Asylum. Then, Meagan dives right into the bloodied wafers of Ronald O’Brien.

After a technology glitch that reminded the ladies of their own mortality, they’re back with an episode full of yelling! After a recap of the insanely contrasted weekends they’re coming back from, Allie gives us an update on R Kelly’s bullshit since our Decemer episode, including the new #MuteRKelly movement. After Meagan screams into a pillow during Allie’s segment, the roles reverse as Allie’s head explodes while Meagan discusses Jillian Epperly and her insane claims that salty cabbage water cures cancer!
Neither of our stories end happily, but hopefully justice comes in some form very soon!

This show was recorded live at Portland’s own Starday Tavern. Thanks to everyone for coming out and talking about racism in Oregon. We discussed the pathetic hate group White Aryan Resistance and its members brutal 1988 killing of student and father Muguleta Seraw.
As noted in the show, the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified 18 active hate groups in the state of Oregon. We have a lot of work to do. Please consider donating to SPLC for their incredible work to continue —> https://www.splcenter.org/support-us

The gals recount their weekend adventures, give an update on R Kelly and NXIVM, and get to culting!
