Episodi

  • In these shorter Side Mirror episodes, I introduce concepts, tools, and experts that help you enable Fulfilling Performance for yourself and the people you lead and care about.

This Side Mirror explores what might be holding you back from bringing your full value to the role you already have. Inspired by a deliberately provocative question I once asked from the stage—“Are you earning more than you’re worth?”—I reflect on how fear, organisational structure, and even our own unconscious biases can prevent us from acting with the autonomy our roles actually afford. I’ll challenge you to consider where you might be clipping your own wings and how to lean in and lead with more intention, creativity, and ownership.

  • In this episode of CAREER-VIEW MIRROR, we explore the remarkable journey of Darin Roberge—collector, commentator, and classic car marketing entrepreneur—who currently serves as the President of Motorwerks Marketing and the custodian of Arizona Car Week.

Darin shares his story of reinvention: from a turbulent youth in Colorado, immersed in music and substance abuse, to building a thriving multi-brand business at the heart of the collector car scene. We talk about the mentors who helped him turn things around, the bold leap that brought him to Arizona, and the corporate challenges he faced in his early automotive career.

You’ll hear how he transformed Arizona Car Week into a dynamic, diverse series of events, and how he channels his energy and creativity into supporting nonprofits alongside his commercial work. He even recorded this interview between 2:30 and 4:00 a.m.—a testament to his commitment.

Darin’s is a story of grit, growth, and genuine passion, with a few magic tricks up his sleeve.

    We discuss:

    • Growing up in Colorado and discovering music at age 13

    • The turning point that set him on a new path

    • Selling a prized guitar to fund his move to Arizona

    • His unexpected entry into the classic car industry

    • Learning corporate life on the fly at Russo and Steele

    • Launching Motorwerks and expanding it into five businesses

    • Reinventing Arizona Car Week

    • His work raising $25M+ for nonprofits

    • The role of boxing, blues music, and personal discipline in his life

    • Why it’s wise to keep “at least two rabbits up your sleeve”

  • In these shorter Side Mirror episodes, I introduce concepts, tools, and experts that help you enable Fulfilling Performance for yourself and the people you lead and care about.

This Side Mirror is the second in a two part series about friction. Last week, in Part 1, I talked about unseen friction that is costing you more that you realise and I shared how to detect that friction using four Diagnostic Questions. This week I'm going to talk about how we can use four Guiding Principles to continuously remove handbrakes, reduce friction and enable Fulfilling Performance.

  • In these shorter Side Mirror episodes, I introduce concepts, tools, and experts that help you enable Fulfilling Performance for yourself and the people you lead and care about.

In this Side Mirror which is part one of two episodes, I want to talk about friction.

Not the physics kind. The kind that silently builds up in our work and lives, slowing us down without us even noticing. The kind of friction that gets in the way of us bringing more of what we’ve already got to what we’re doing.

Fulfilling Performance depends on us recognising and removing this type of friction—what I often refer to as handbrakes.

In Part 2, next week I’ll share how the most common forms of friction fall into four broad categories—and how by topping up the Fundamentals we can reduce friction and enable Fulfilling Performance.

  • This is part two of an episode called Lilypads and gangplanks which is about how we can navigate our careers in a controlled way by developing ourselves in the direction of our strengths.

In doing so we grow our capability towards our next role, extending a virtual gangplank rather than leaping frog like towards a potential opportunity or lily pad.

In Part 1 I shared an exercise to help you identify those aspects of your current role that you find fulfilling along with those that you find draining.

In Part 2 we will look at how to analyse your findings and start to create weeks for yourself that contain more fulfilling activities and fewer draining ones.

  • The title of this episode is Lily pads and gangplanks and I feel I ought to explain it.

It seems to me that sometimes when we are considering our next career move we adopt a perspective that I imagine may be similar to that of a frog. We are sitting on one lily pad, that is our current role and we spy another more attractive looking lily pad some way away. We decide to make a leap for it and sometimes we make it and have a good landing and sometimes we miss and land in the water.

An alternative approach which is not open to frogs but is available to us is to use the equivalent of a gangplank to traverse more securely and predictably from our current situation to where we believe we want to be.

We build this gangplank by expanding our current lily pad or role in the direction of our strengths until it reaches our desired destination or until we have more information about ourselves or the desired role or a mixture of both and we decide to alter our course.

This episode is the first of two episodes that will help you to start expanding your role in the direction of your strengths and your desired next position or lily pad. I hope you find it useful.

  • In this episode, we are celebrating the career to date of Mike Nakrani.

Mike is the Chief Executive Officer of VEV, the innovative e-fleet solutions provider backed by energy sector leader Vitol. With over two decades of experience in the mobility sector, Mike has navigated pivotal roles at Ford and BP, combining his expertise in sustainable transportation and energy transition with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Mike’s story begins in a small village in India, where his family lived a subsistence lifestyle, before moving to England when he was six years old. He recalls meeting his father for the first time at the airport, an early chapter in a life shaped by resilience and adaptability.

In our conversation, Mike shares how a mentor guided him to take on challenging production line management early in his career at Ford—a move that stretched him but ultimately defined his professional path. We discuss his entrepreneurial foray into scooters while working full-time, his strategic leadership roles at Ford, and the decision to leave BP to build VEV with Vitol’s backing, helping organizations electrify their fleets and accelerate the energy transition.

Mike’s deep focus on people and purpose shines through as he reflects on the importance of getting the right people in the right roles and supporting them to thrive. Whether it’s starting with the local milkman at nine years old or driving a major industry shift toward electrification, Mike’s journey is filled with insights that will inspire and resonate with listeners.

  • Do you ever look back on things you did earlier in your career and cringe with embarrassment?

I have many examples that pop into my head from time to time. Fortunately, I’ve learned to be kind to myself and to forgive younger me for the jaw-dropping lack of experience and awareness I displayed on occasion. I’ve since reframed these excruciating memories as reassuring evidence of my ability to grow. I wouldn’t cringe about them if I hadn’t learned how wrong they were, would I?

In this episode, I reflect on a time earlier in my career when I lacked the knowledge and experience to fully support my team and how the lessons I learned contributed to the creation of the Fulfilling Performance Framework.

  • Ten years ago, almost to the day, I landed back in the UK from New Zealand. Looking back, it’s easy to simplify things with hindsight, but that moment marked the start of a significant transformation for me. I had begun the process of self-actualization.

As Daniel Pink articulated in Drive, we’re driven by autonomy, mastery, and meaningful work. For me, those drivers align perfectly with the BIGR framework: belief, intentionality, a growth mindset, and repetition. That’s what has helped me grow—and that’s what I believe can help you grow too.

To become your best self, to self-actualize and fill out your biggest Russian doll, you need to get "BIGR": Belief, Intentionality, Growth Mindset, and Repetition.

Last week, in Part 1, I introduced the concept of growing into your biggest Russian doll—of becoming the fullest version of yourself—and teased that I’d explain the name B.I.G. Iain. In this episode, Part 2, we dive deeper into what it takes to grow BIGR and what the name BIG Iain represents.

  • Back in 2006, I accepted a role within BMW Group that required moving my family from the UK to Singapore. My wife and I have two children who at the time, were aged 10 and 6.

In the weeks leading up to our move, I often found myself explaining the decision to colleagues: I'd say, “I felt I needed to get out of my comfort zone.”

Fast forward to early 2007, and there I was in my new office in Singapore, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, trying to figure out how things worked—and feeling very uncomfortable. I remember thinking, “This is what they mean by a comfort zone!”

Around the same time, I was reminded of something I’d learned on a management training program in South Africa: “Your responsibility as a manager is to produce results and grow the people.”

In Episode 197, I shared why growing people matters so much. Today, I want to build on that by introducing a metaphor for growth—one that has shaped my thinking ever since. And next week, I’ll explore how we can use this metaphor to grow ourselves and those we lead and care about.
