  • How can a justice system allow an innocent man to remain in prison?
Bone Valley explores that maddening question and so much more.

What a thrill to conclude our series on WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS today with Gilbert King, the host of my favorite podcast this year, BONE VALLEY. Gilbert is also the Pulitzer prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove. HE has written two other NYT best-selling books and his work covers race, crime, and justice in America.

If you have already listened to BoneValley then you’ll leave hearing some of Gilbert’s behind-the-scenes discussion about the making of the show, and if you have not yet listened then you’ll also love hearing his passion and conviction for this nearly unbelievable story.

    BONE VALLEY OVERVIEW
IN 1987, 18-year-old Michelle Schofield was found dead in a phosphate pit in Florida. Two years later, her husband Leo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Fifteen years later, previously unidentified fingerprints matched Jeremy Scott--a violent teenager who lived nearby. Jeremy has since confessed to Michelle’s murder. Yet Leo Schofield remains behind bars.

  • In addition to the moral cost of incarcerating the innocent, it’s also literally expensive. Today’s guests are going to share about the high cost of wrongful convictions.

They are a dream team, a force to be reckoned with, a dynamic duo — and they are applying their talents to combat the horrors of wrongful convictions. Please welcome back Maggie Freleng and say hello to our first time guest, Jason Flom.

Maggie is a Pulitzer prize winning journalist and host of Wrongful Conviction with Maggie Freleng. Jason Flom is a music industry icon turned criminal justice advocate, reformer, and philanthropist. He created the podcast network, Lava for Good, and hosts Righteous Convictions.

  • What happens when political corruption leads to a wrongful conviction? Unfortunately, that’s what unfolds in the podcast, Murder in Oregon, hosted and produced by today’s guest, Lauren Bright Pacheco. Lauren is an Emmy award winning TV Producer who has parlayed her storytelling skills to podcasting. It’s in this medium that she discovered “audio activism” which has illuminated something I’ve been seeking for quite some time!

Join me as Lauren gives us insight into the horrifying story of Michael Franke’s murder, and Frank Gable’s wrongful conviction. Frank has been released and Lauren updates us on his case.

  • What happens to an exoneree after they are released? Let's find out as we welcome BACK today’s guest, Jeff Deskovic. A truly remarkable human, Jeff is an exoneree, an advocate for criminal justice reform, a lawyer, and the founder of the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation.

I would encourage you to go back and listen to his first interview (which is two parts) on DIE-ALOGUE where Jeff shares his practically unbelievable story. He was wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of Angela Correa, only to be exonerated (on the grounds of ACTUAL innocence) 16 years later.

Listen to Jeff’s 1st interview on DIE-ALOGUE here:

Today he’s come back to help us understand what happens to an exoneree after their release. Listeners, prepare yourselves: it’s horrible. The better news is that Jeff is working tirelessly to change that and he gives us ways to join the cause. You don’t need to be rich, talented, or have a certain type of career- we can ALL do SOMETHING.

If you care about wrongful convictions, this conversation is a must listen. Please share! Resources listed below, including a link to Jeff’s Foundation’s Patreon page.

  • What do you get when a successful reality TV producer crosses paths with a celebrity so famous that her social media following rivals the population of a small country?
A true crime podcast called THE SYSTEM, executive produced and hosted by Kim Kardashian and today’s guest, Lori Rothschild.

Now what you were expecting? Lori either. The story of Kevin Keith, the man at the center of ‘THE SYSTEM’’ found Lori before she’d fully understood the scope of the issue. A daughter of an NYPD police officer, Lori believed cops didn’t make mistakes and the bad guys were in jail.
Years into her research of Kevin’s case, she quickly discovered that things were not so black and white.

Kevin’s story had holes all over it and this podcast was an opportunity to rattle the cages and affect change. The worst part about her new-found awareness was realizing Kevin is not a unicorn. There are thousands of cases like this all over the country.

Listen and learn about Lori’s journey into advocacy, working with Kim Kardashian, and about the ways they have partnered with Kevin’s brother, Charles, to join in the fight for his innocence.

Then listen to the SYSTEM on Spotify! Additional resources on Kevin Keith’s case can be found via the link below!

  • *Content Warning* Today's episode deals with consent and sexual assault, please listen with care and refer to the show notes below for resources.

What are three F words that should never take place in Sex? Force, Fear, and Fraud. Today’s episode will empower you to demand justice for victims and survivors of sexual assault.

After surviving three sexual assaults, Joyce Short began researching penal law in the United States and what she found was terrifying. There is no way to guarantee equal protection under the law when here is no consistent definition for consent across the country.

Joyce shares the very important definition of the word consent along with practical advice for survivors to help them find justice.

  • This episode might be best enjoyed on a front porch with some sweet tea. I don’t live in the south, but my guest’s stories made me feel I was there; creaky doors closing to keep the mosquitos out, and humid air thick with mystery and secrets. I was transported as today’s guest told me stories of her life and career.

I met Sheryl McCollum at CrimeCon and knew she must come on the show and share about her work. She is currently a crime scene analyst, but got her start volunteering at a rape crisis center at Grady Hospital. But her love of mysteries and solving cold cases goes way back to childhood when her mama introduced her to criminal couple, Bonnie and Clyde.

Sheryl is an Emmy Award winning CSI from CBS46’s CSI Atlanta, Director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute (CCIRI), a writer for CrimeOnLine, Forensic and Crime Scene Expert for Crime Stories with Nancy Grace, and a CSI for a metro Atlanta Police Department.

  • David Robinson began the search for his son, Daniel, 11 months ago. Parlaying his military experience into the search, David runs the operation like an Army mission. After all, what greater mission is there than to find your missing child?

David shares an overview of his son’s case, the ways law enforcement has failed him, how he has garnered media interest, and the shocking discovery of human remains that David and his volunteers uncovered while searching for Daniel.

    CASE BACKGROUND:

Daniel Robinson was last seen the morning of June 23, 2021 leaving his worksite in Buckeye, AZ. He was driving his 2017 blue-grey Jeep Renegade and is believed to have headed west, deeper into desert terrain.

On Tuesday, July 19, 2021, Daniel’s vehicle was found by a rancher a little over two and a half miles from the worksite in a remote part of the desert. On that day, the Rancher reported the vehicle to Buckeye Police Department who later did a search by ground and drone. The vehicle was recovered; Daniel was not found.

  • Picture it: you’re at a formal dinner and get seated among strangers. Everyone goes around and shares their name and where they’re from. One table mate says “I’m Susan, I’m from Galveston.” You can’t help but say “Galveston? I can’t hear that without thinking of Robert Durst.” People laugh knowingly. Did I mention the dinner was at CrimeCon? Aforementioned table mate says “I was the judge who presided over Bob Durst’s trial in 2003, for the murder of Morris Black.”

Friends, when I say my jaw dropped I need you to believe me! So this story is true and you can bet that I made good on my promise to contact Susan after CrimeCon to have her on the podcast.

Today’s guest is my dinner mate, Susan Criss. Former prosecutor, then judge, now criminal defense attorney. In addition to spilling some Durst tea, she also talks about her unique vantage point given her experience playing every role in a courtroom. Color me ECSTATIC.

Susan Criss is a true crime enthusiast just like us. In fact, she is working on a book and went to CrimeCon for market research. I think I gave her more than she bargained for. Life is full of surprises. Please enjoy this episode.

  • I am just about recovered from Covid, but need another week to get the new series in tact. To that end, please enjoy a REPLAY with my friend and one of the OG true crime podcasters, Justin Evans. Justin even does the show's intro so enjoy his smooth voice until I am back with an all new episode next week. Thank you, Justin for lending your voice and for the fun walk down memory lane in this February 2020 interview!

    Original show notes Feb 2020:

Before there was SERIAL, there was Generation Why. Justin Evans is one half of Generation WHY - the actual OG of true crime podcasts. He's also the one of the kindest guys in podcasting if you ask me. What a thrill to speak with him, hear about the early days of true crime podcasting, how he keeps it fresh with Aaron after 8 years, and where he finds himself now. He's also the host of The Peripheral podcast which I am particularly loving as it brings these PERIPHERAL topics around true crime, straight to the top...it's very raw and vulnerable. I like it.

Justin and I recorded in NYC and my only regret is that we didn't have more time. Thank you, Justin, killing the small talk, and I hope to continue the DIE-ALOGUE!

    ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:
Week 2 of our November 2020 series: TRUE CRIME PODCASTERS!

My next guest needs no introduction, but let me try anyway. He is one half of the raucously funny, wild hit of a podcast, TRUE CRIME OBSESSED. The show whose title we all relate to immediately. Patrick Hinds is here today and he shares how he and Gillian stumbled into the successful format of TCO, then formed his network, THE OBSESSED NETWORK, and hints at a new show coming in January.
I am confident you will hear a new side of Patrick in this conversation - he says he comes off serious, I say impassioned and I like it! I appreciate Patrick killing the small talk.

  • You think you know Paul Holes, but do you really? And for the 14 of you wondering “Who is Paul Holes?” Welcome to the bright side.

Paul Holes is an American former cold-case investigator for the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. Holes is known for his contributions to solving the Golden State Killer case using advanced methods of identifying the killer with DNA and genealogy technology. He is also inspired the true crime/pop culture hashtag: #hotforHoles

For our final true crime book interview (this season), I spoke with Paul Holes about his new memoir, UNMASKED.

This book reveals an even deeper look into Paul’s illustrious career— which so many of us followed, especially his role in taking down the Golden State Killer. But the book also offers a vulnerable look into Paul’s professional success, and how it often came at the expense of his personal life.

  • DIE-ALOGUE Podcast is hosted by Rebekah Sebastian. Each week, Rebekah speaks with the leading voices in crime, culture, and justice. Together, they attempt to answer: "What are we even talking about, when we talk about true crime?"

    New episodes every Wednesdays.

  • Have you ever known someone in childhood who became infamous or notorious later?

Today’s episode — the third in our “New True Crime Books” series, features a captivating story of an ordinary woman in an extraordinary circumstance. Like many of us,Jamie Gehring grew up with an eccentric neighbor - we all know the type. But in Jamie’s case, her neighbor’s solitude and “quirkiness” were anything but benign. Her neighbor was Ted Kaczynski.

In her book and in our conversation, Jamie reckons with her memories of Ted; what does she do with the pleasant ones given all she knows now? This conversation is full of nuance, memories, and an exploration of the classic nature vs. nurture debate. And of course, how to maintain integrity in true crime storytelling .
