USAT Duathlon double national champion gives the lowdown on her win in both the sprint and standard distance race at the recent National Championships. She's had success as a duathlete, triathlete, and bike racer while working a regular job and raising two young children. She did her first triathlon in 1999 and she wasn't fast. She was last in her age group, but she was inspired by the encouragement of her competitors in her first race.

Episode 9

Kenny Souza, the first big star of duathlon, joins the show to let us know what he’s up to now and to look back at Powerman Zofingen 1992.
1992 was the fourth year for the race and they paid big appearance fees to bring in top name triathletes. Kenny did Zofingen the previous two years, winning it in 1990, and he wasn’t happy about getting a lessor appearance fee than the triathletes.
Before the race he told his friend and training partner Mark Allen that he was going to beat him. His entire focus during the race was beating Mark. Kenny and Mark were together on the run and the bike. By Kenny’s recollection they were 9 minutes down on race leader Jurgen Zack entering the run, and Albert Zweifel was in second.
Kenny left Mark behind at the start of the 30k run and at the halfway mark Zack was in striking distance. He passed Zweifel but bonked with 5k to go. Zweifel repassed him, then Mark closed near the finish line. His desire to beat Mark reinvigorated him and he battled Zweifel to take second and hold off Mark.
Results (May 1993) 7.5k run, 150k bike, 30k run
Jurgen Zack (GER) 6:22:44
Kenny Souza (USA) 6:26:25
Albert Zweifel (SUI) 6:26:37

Episode 3
I interview US age group Elizabeth Sylves about her experience at the 2014 Duathlon World Championships in Spain. She discusses her preparation for the race, changes she made to prepare for this event, and obstacles that come up when racing the World Championships. Inexplicably, USAT put out a webinar 2 weeks before the race and told Team USA the race would be flat, but it turned out to be hilly. We also discuss the 7 week transition and training between the World Championships and the US National Championships. -
Episode 2
I interview Kris Swarthout, who is the local organizing coordinator for the 2014 & 2015 USAT Duathlon National Championships, taking place July 19 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
We discuss the course and recent changes required due to flooding. He also takes about Minneapolis involvement and some things to look for during your visit.
If you're racing the National Championships you'll want to listen to this interview.
They had to move the transition area due to flooding. If you want to find the transition area on Google Maps search '75 Plato Avenue.' The start point of the race and the run route have not changed.
This race will qualify US athletes for the 2015 Duathlon World Championships in Australia. The race website is located here.

Episode 1
Welcome! This is a 4 minute introduction to the show.
Purpose Of The Podcast
To bring training information and duathlon news specifically to duathletes. The show will evolve based on feedback from you.
This is my second podcast. My first is the Triathlete Training Podcast which began in 2013. To date I've released 33 episodes of that podcast. Much of the content on that show is applicable right now to duathletes.
I expect this show to be a little more personal than my triathlon podcast. This show might now be as polished. My main goal here is to pump out good content for duathletes.
I'd like to help grow the sport with this podcast and promote some of the great duathlons around the world, both big and small. Hopefully some first time duathletes will find the show and use it to get them through their first race.
About Eric Schwartz
I raced duathlons from 1989 to 2005 and won the Pro National Championships in 2004. Duathlon.com is my website that I've operated since 1998. I've been coaching since 2000 and I have prebuilt training plans available for sale at Duathlon.com.
Promoting The Show
There is a way you can help the show right now - go to iTunes and write a review on this show. The visibility of this show within iTunes is affected by the number of reviews it receives. Also, let your fellow duathletes know about the show. It's available in iTunes and at Duathlon.com.
