Episodes

  • *Trigger Warning:* This episode discusses intimate partner violence and child abuse.

In this powerful and insightful episode, we welcome Courtney Lavalley, the Children's Program Coordinator at Sofia House, a vital refuge for women escaping violence and domestic abuse. Courtney shares her invaluable experiences and insights from working at Sofia House, a safe place that provides critical support for women in crisis.

Courtney Levalley is dedicated to transforming the lives of women and children who have experienced domestic violence. As the Children's Program Coordinator at Sofia House, she plays a crucial role in providing a safe and nurturing environment for our next generation.

    Sofia House:
Sofia House is more than a home for women fleeing violence. They offer parenting, group and personal coaching programs as well.

    Key Statistics:
    - Women are 2 1/2 to 3 times more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence than men.
    - Intimate partner abuse is the number one form of abuse in Saskatchewan.

    Important Insights:
    - Trust your instincts. If you're questioning whether your situation is abusive, it likely is. Seek out a safe person and a safe place immediately.
    - To support a survivor, be as non-judgmental as possible. Be a friend and offer a safe place.

    Thought to Ponder:
Consider the roots of abusive behavior. What trauma did the abuser experience that led them to seek control through violence?

    Understanding the Impact on Children:
Children who have witnessed or experienced abuse often show signs through their physical well-being and school performance. Recognizing these signs is crucial in providing them with the help they need.

Join us as we delve into these topics and more, shedding light on the critical work being done at Sofia's House and how we can all contribute to supporting survivors of domestic abuse.

  • Here are 5 Rules for YOU to have an amazing and awesome life, which will help you be successful. All behaviour is communication, whether it is behaviour we like or we don’t like it is all communicating something. Our children’s behaviour is also connected to feelings, and these feelings are connected to developed or undeveloped skills. BUT we can help our kids develop these adult skills NOW so they can be successful, even now.

Is this something you want to see happen?

Developing great character and communication skills might take some work, so I am including an infographic printable to help you and your child grow these skills. Download NOW.

Use this for your own purposes or to work with your child on choosing which skills your child needs to work on, which skills they are doing well at, and making a plan to work on these together.

We've all been there. We have all thought, "everybody has abandoned me, I’m the victim, why is everyone so awful to me?" BUT could this be a tell tale sign that it isn't them?

Before we spend long days around lots of people we may not "like" let's challenge ourselves with some truths. So we are mentally prepared for awkward moments.
