  • While Michael was making everybody look left at that terrible movie "Singularity", I was silently choosing one hell of a banger to watch this week. If you haven't seen "Lucky Number Slevin" yet, go do that now! I'll wait.

Are you done? Great! Now listen to us talk about it! - Andy

This episode of Fried Rice Podcast was a refreshing change of pace after the disaster that was Singularity. We dove into Lucky Number Slevin (2006), and right from the start, you could tell Andy was relieved to be talking about a movie that actually worked. He even called it one of the best-written movies we’ve watched in a long time. The clever dialogue, slick direction, and that wild Kansas City Shuffle twist had us all hooked.

Michael and Brennan both agreed that Lucky Number Slevin had a lot going for it. Brennan loved the sharp, punchy lines, especially the running gag about Slevin's broken nose ("I was using it to break someone's fist"). Michael pointed out how the movie does a brilliant job of misdirection, constantly making you look left while it’s doing something sneaky on the right. We all had a good laugh reminiscing about how satisfying that twist was, even after all these years.

When it came time to grade, we were all in the same ballpark. Andy gave it a solid B, appreciating the wit and how it still holds up. Brennan and Michael were right there with him, landing around the B range as well. Overall, Lucky Number Slevin averaged out to a B, a well-deserved grade for a movie that balances style, humor, and a good dose of action.

  • It's rare on this podcast that the crew has to suffer together as a collective unit, this is one of those rare moments... This week we review... "Singularity" 2017 starring* John Cusack and maybe others? Honestly, who cares? Not the director, or actors, or set designers, or costumers, I bet even the best boy was one of the worst boys you could find. This movie sucks, do not watch it, listen to us break it down for you instead! - Andy

This episode of Fried Rice Podcast was full of fiery opinions as the crew tackled Singularity (2017), a sci-fi film featuring a low-energy John Cusack performance and a narrative that barely held itself together. Right from the start, you could feel the frustration in the air. Austin and Brennan weren't shy about voicing their disdain, with Austin regretting neglecting his kids just to sit through this film. "I’d rather be walked in on by my kids during the most embarrassing moment of my life than have them see me watch this movie," was one of the more dramatic complaints.

Andy, as always, tried to keep things light but struggled to defend the movie against the onslaught of criticism from his co-hosts. Michael, who apparently was responsible for suggesting this movie, took a lot of heat. The rest of the crew poked fun at his decision-making, leaving Michael to defend Singularity in vain. While there were a few entertaining tangents and fun moments like the ongoing bit about calling Bob to watch the movie, the consensus was clear: Singularity was a huge miss for everyone involved.

When it came time to dish out grades, things got grim. Andy generously gave it a D, while Austin and Brennan both threw down the dreaded W (Waste of Time). Michael, true to form, tried to salvage it with a C, but the team’s average final grade settled at an F. Despite the laughs and chaos of the episode, the movie itself left a sour taste—one the team likely won't forget anytime soon.

  • Wearing matching jeans and black coats, the guys interrupt a church service to kiss a statue of Jesus, Why? Because we've got gangsters to kill of course! We are discussing "The Boondock Saints" 1999 and "The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" 2009. - Andy

This episode of Fried Rice Podcast was a wild ride as we tackled the cult classic The Boondock Saints (1999). Andy kicked things off by reminiscing about how much he loved this movie as a teenager and how he once seriously considered getting one of the famous "Veritas" or "Aequitas" hand tattoos. The whole gang laughed about that, but things quickly got real as we dove into a deeper conversation about the movie’s impact and how it holds up years later.

Austin had a lot to say about how The Boondock Saints doesn’t hold up as well as he remembered. He went from loving the film in his teens to now seeing it as a flawed indie movie with over-the-top performances, particularly from Willem Dafoe. Michael, on the other hand, was still riding hard for the movie and planted his flag on the hill defending it. He acknowledged its faults but argued that the film’s energy and unique style still make it entertaining.

In the end, we were pretty split. Andy and Michael gave the movie a strong B for the nostalgia and the sheer fun of it all, while Austin wasn’t so generous, landing somewhere around a C. With everyone’s ratings averaged out, The Boondock Saints landed at a B-, a respectable grade for a film that still sparks strong opinions even decades after its release.

  • Austin picked a dark and violent movie this week, leading to a dark and violent episode with the guys. We are talking about "Only God Forgives" 2014 starring Ryan Gosling, and I fucking loved it! - Andy

In this episode of Fried Rice Podcast, the conversation got real intense as we dove into Only God Forgives (2013), and let me tell you, opinions were all over the place. Andy came out swinging, admitting he absolutely loved the movie, even though the rest of us were less than impressed. In true Andy fashion, he decided to toss out the usual grading system, going rogue and declaring Only God Forgives as "God Tier," a rating that trumped everything else. None of us saw that coming, but hey, it’s Andy's show, right?

Brennan and Mike had much more reserved takes on the film, giving it a C. They could appreciate some of the artistry, like Refn’s trademark visuals and eerie atmosphere, but overall, they found the film to be distant and slow, with Ryan Gosling’s muted performance leaving them disconnected. The long pauses and cryptic plot didn’t do much to win them over, though they at least acknowledged the style, even if the substance didn’t land for them.

Even though the rest of us weren’t feeling it, Andy’s passion for Only God Forgives was palpable. He saw something deeper in the visual storytelling, and his bold declaration of it being "God Tier" closed the book on any further debate. Sure, Brennan and Mike’s C ratings might have dragged it down a bit in theory, but according to Andy, this movie is untouchable. So there you have it: Only God Forgives is firmly in the God Tier according to the Fried Rice Podcast—whether we like it or not.
