  • Welcome to our 200th episode! This week Kathryn and Kristi are joined by a very special guest, Heather Jackson. A former professional triathlete, Heather has jumped with both feet into the world of off road racing, claiming impressive results in both gravel cycling AND ultra running. Heather grew up in an athletic family, and her early years in sport were spent on the soccer field and in the ice hockey rink. After her collegiate years playing ice hockey at Princeton, Heather quickly found her way into triathlon and never looked back. In her over 15 years as a professional triathlete Heather claimed 6 Ironman wins, 16 Ironman 70.3 wins, and finished in the top 5 at the Ironman World Championships 4 times. Heather talks about her transition from top Ironman pro to gravel racer and trail runner, and some of her highlights on the dirt so far including being part of the epic 9-woman sprint at Unbound in 2024. She also gives her advice for folks that may be pursuing both cycling and trail running this season.

  • Here we go again with the bombardment of “New Year, New You” ads and messages to “eat this, not that,” or “do this specific workout for 30 days to get amazing abs.” You know the drill and they’re probably in your feed as we speak.

In this first-of-its kind episode, Feisty Media podcast hosts Kathryn Taylor (Girls Gone Gravel), Sara Gross (Women’s Performance Podcast), Kelly O’Mara (If We Were Riding), and Selene Yeager (Hit Play Not Pause) unite for a candid conversation about these societal pressures of New Year's resolutions and the pitfalls of Fitness Challenges within women’s fitness culture.

Building positive new habits isn’t a bad thing, but the problem is that most of the challenges, diets, and cleanses often lead to underfueling, which can sabotage your goals as an active woman.

Sharing their own personal experiences with diet culture and disordered eating, Kathryn, Sara, Selene, and Kelly advocate for more self-acceptance and celebrating what the body can achieve, emphasizing overall health over aesthetics. Quite simply - they want you to be fueled for your 2025 goals.

That’s why we’re launching the Feisty Fueled Challenge in January to foster healthier food and fitness dialogues. This FREE five day challenge will help you dive deeper into some of the internalized messages that we all struggle with, and feel empowered to make smart and mindful decisions about how to fuel in 2025.

Starting January 6th, you’ll receive daily emails from leading fueling & mindset experts that will reframe your mindset around fueling and cover some practical ways to fuel your 2025 goals.

With just 10 minutes each day, you’ll be ready to be your best feisty, fueled self in 2025 and redefine health and fitness on your own terms.

  • For our final show of 2024, Kathryn and Kristi are joined by return guest Heidi Rentz. They recently launched a new event for 2025, but this time they are breaking out the running shoes! The Daydreamer trail run will be taking place in Patagonia February 27-March 1, 2025. The event will be held at the Patagonia Lumber Co, and will be offering 10km, 30km, and 50 km distances. Heidi fills us in on all of the event details, and also gives some tips on weaving cycling and running fitness together for your training plan in 2025.

  • Geerike “Gee” Schruers was a soigneur on the women’s pro tour for over 10 years, taking care of some of the best riders in the world to help them perform at their best. However, last year she was tempted by the growing gravel scene, and made the jump to professional racing herself. Gee joined up with Specialized and is the only Specialized/SD Worx rider that focuses solely on gravel. She tells us about joining up with the rest of the road team for her very first training camp, and what she learned from her years as a soigneur that she is now applying to her own training and racing. Gee finished second at Unbound 2024 in an historic 9 women sprint to the finish line after 200 miles of some of the best and most dynamic women’s gravel racing we have ever seen. She outlines her plans for the rest of the season, and talks about where she thinks women’s cycling is heading in the future.

  • This week on the show Kathryn catches up with Crystal Anthony a few days ahead of her recent 9th place finish at the Leadville 100. The Bentonville-based athlete grew up in a cycling family, but first set her competitive sights on collegiate running. After missing out on an Olympic marathon qualification by a handful of seconds, Crystal decided to shift her focus to triathlon which eventually led her to cyclocross and then gravel racing. She has now been with the Liv team for seven years, and is consistently cracking the top 10 in the Life Time Grand Prix. Before committing to racing full time, Anthony was a middle school teacher for 12 years. She has maintained her love of teaching, and now gives back to the sport as a cycling coach. This coming year she will be running gravel camps with fellow Bentonviller, Paige Onweller. You can learn more about these camps and Crystal’s coaching on her website www.crystaljanthony.com

  • The USA Women’s national mountain bike team is absolutely stacked with talent. This week on we hear from Kristi who had the chance to sit down with two of its up and coming stars while visiting Bentonville this fall. Madigan (Maddie) Munro is a ski racer turned mountain bike phenom from Boulder, CO. She is currently signed with Trek Factory racing and will be making the jump from U23 to Elite on the World Cup circuit in 2025. Sofia Waite, of Golden, CO started her athletic career as a runner but quickly found her way to mountain biking through her local NICA program. Growing up racing against Maddie, Sofia has now signed with BH Coloma and is also racing as a U23 on the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. The pair talks about the supportive dynamic throughout all of the women on the mountain bike national team, and how they are also becoming role models for the next generation of USA mountain bike athletes. They also fill us in on what life on the world cup circuit is like as they travel the world to race their bikes.

  • This week Kathryn and Kristi are catching up with Life Time Grand Prix athlete Caroline Tory from Aspen, Colorado. Caroline grew up in downtown Toronto but was always drawn to the mountains, and after attending college in Maine she moved to Colorado and dove head first into the outdoor lifestyle spending her time skiing and mountain biking. A collegiate runner, Caroline was no stranger to competition, so as she got more confident on her mountain bike competing in races was a natural progression. Caroline discovered that she was drawn to longer mountain and gravel cycling events, and her success in races gave her the confidence to apply for the Life Time Grand Prix in 2023, and she is taking on the series again in 2024. Off the bike Caroline runs the Literary Arts Program at the Aspen Institute, she gives her insights on balancing a demanding full time job and racing the Grand Prix, and answers the hard hitting questions; like if audiobooks count as reading.

  • Putting on a gravel event for thousands of people is no small task. Our guest this week Amy Charity knows that all too well. Amy is at the helm of the GRVL series which hosts gravel races in FNLD GRVL in Lahti Finland, RDL GRVL in Adelaide Australia, as well as SBT GRVL in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This year their flagship race, SBT GRVL was met with an enormous new challenge as it faced major resistance from some residents of the small rural community that hosts the event. Amy talks through the challenges of putting on such a large event in a remote, rural community and how she and the GRVL team have had to work with stakeholders to make changes with the event so that it minimizes disruptions for residents of the county. She also discusses why it is so important that we, as gravel cyclists, act as good stewards to the places in which we ride our bikes to ensure that these places are being protected and preserved for all users of the land.

  • This week we have another special episode for you with two Life Time Grand Prix athletes, who, off the bike, are experts in sports nutrition. Sarah Lange is a registered dietician, and Anna Hicks is a certified nutritionist. The pair discuss how mindset and diet culture can play into our fueling decisions as athletes, and why it is important for us to challenge those thoughts when they come up. They give us some concrete tips on how to build better nutrition practices around our training and racing, so that we can perform our best both on and off the bike, and also help break down some nutrition basics to help build a foundation of fueling for performance and success.

  • Melisa Rollins was born to race the Leadville 100; although if you had asked her in highschool if this was true, she would have disagreed. Melisa's parents have been racing the Leadville 100 MTB since she was just a year old, so the race runs deep in her blood. She herself has started the race seven times, and crossed the finish line 7 times, including in 2024 where she won the elite women’s race. Melisa also completed the Lead Challenge in 2018, a series of 5 races in Leadville including both the 100 MTB and 100 Run races. A feat that most of us find hard just to wrap our heads around! Focussing on the bike, Melisa signed with Team Twenty24 in 2021 right after racing the Leadville 100 MTB that year, with a dream that she would one day come back and win the race. Supported by her team, Melisa raced in the Life Time Grand Prix in 2022, but stepped away for the 2023 season to focus on gaining race experience on the road circuit with her team. This has paid off for Melisa in dividends as she has returned to the Grand Prix in 2024. Following her win in Leadville this year, Melisa finished 9th at Chequamegon this past weekend and plans on finishing the season strong with two more events remaining in the Grand Prix.

  • This week Kathryn and Kristi welcome back 2022 Lifetime Grand Prix Champion Haley Smith. Haley recently completed her Masters of Science in Sport Psychology, and in this episode she takes a deep dive into how we can all work towards keeping our mindset positive during races and training rides. As both an academic and an accomplished athlete Haley knows the importance of keeping her mental game strong. She talks through her own mindfulness and mindset habits and tricks for preparing for races and hard training sessions. Haley also explains why a mindfulness practice can be a key tool for athletes, and how we can all integrate that practice into our daily routines.
