  • TAKE TIME TO PULL THE WEEDS FROM YOUR LIFE THAT KEEP YOUR GARDEN FROM BLOOMING TO ITS GREATEST BEAUTY. ~TONY WOODALL

[bctt tweet=" SPRING CLEANING - TAKE TIME TO PULL THE WEEDS FROM YOUR LIFE THAT KEEP YOUR GARDEN FROM BLOOMING TO ITS GREATEST BEAUTY. ~TONY WOODALL" username="GoalsPodcast"]

Spring Cleaning - I was reminded by a text yesterday about the need for Spring Cleaning. Yes, it's springtime and spring is a time in of renewal, rebirth, revitalizing. Spring Cleaning is almost a ritual at this time of year - as we often need to look at the things around us and think, "Do they still work in our gardens, our homes, and in our lives. The Spring is a great time to review our goals and if you made them, New Year's Resolutions. If you made New Year's Resolutions, most people have forgotten them already, or have given up on them by now. Have you? If you set goals for the first quarter, where are you? Are you almost complete? Are you still tracking them with your action plan? Maybe it's spring cleaning time in your life. Look at your life. What parts of your life, your garden of ideas and dreams, need some weeding? What closet in your mental house - your passions, need cleaning out? If you have plants, products, "Stuff" that doesn't make you better, move you forward, make you happy - maybe it's time to remove that from your place?

As the person texting reminded me yesterday. Celebrate the spring. It's nature's way of starting over and seeing the brightness and beauty it brings. I'm grateful for my life and my ability to grow. Sometimes growth requires change. Cleaning out our closets and our minds helps to provide room for that growth. Take time this month to review what makes you happy, what makes you grow and what doesn't. Let go of that which holds you back. Grow!

Have a Great Spring, my friends. Go out and make today a great day. Do have some cleaning to do? Do you need someone to help you review what you want to do with your life, where you want to be? Maybe you need someone to hold you accountable. I know I could have used that type of person as I started working on my Spring Cleaning.

I offer coaching services for people that want to gain an advantage over the clutter of life and help you set your goals and keep you accountable as you strive to achieve those goals.

  • Tanner Gers

I met Tanner online in one of the Facebook groups I frequent. Tanner, like me, is a motivational speaker and podcaster. I heard Tanner's story on several podcasts and I was impressed and inspired by Tanner's ability to overcome the obstacles put in front of him.

After hearing Tanner's story, I wanted to interview him for Goal Getting Podcast so you could hear him, learn from him and understand that we don't have to let obstacles keep us from achieving our goals. I was attending a National Speaker's Association (@NSASpeaker ) Video Lab in Tempe, Arizona. I posted I was in Tempe on my Facebook page and Tanner, a Facebook friend, connected on Facebook and said he would love to meetup while I was in town, since he lived nearby. I met up with Tanner and his lovely wife for dinner and we went back to my hotel. We both had been wanting to speak to each other and interview each other on our podcasts. So, we did!.

We met in the hotel lobby, with the music playing and other NSA members chatting in the background. Listen to Tanner's story on Goal Getting Podcast. How he quiets the inner voices. How giving forgiveness made his life better. How to use breathing to help make your life better. What Quote Hangs On Your Wall?

  • Spring is the time to find out where you are, who you are, and move toward where you are going. Spring is my favorite time of the year. We are just coming out of a cold, dreary, time in our life. That is unless you live in a tropical climate. Then spring may be just a little warmer than it was yesterday, weather wise. But I often think of spring as when we need to reflect back on where we are, who we are and where we want to be. That's why this quote hits home with me. Many do this reflection at the the beginning of the calendar year. In December and January, we start working on our goals for the coming year, defining what we want to be and work on by the end of the year. Me, I like thinking of spring as the beginning of a new cycle of life. That's what nature does. The spring is the rebirth of the new life after the winter freezes. I find I can better get a feel for where I am in life and where I want to be when the spring comes. But that's me. It doesn't matter when you begin. The key is to begin, to start this process when it is best for you. Regardless of when you start, it also a good time to check in periodically on where you are, who you are and where you are going. If you started in December or January, working on your goals, take some time now, in the spring, to see if the fruits of your labor are starting to spring up? Are you who you wanted to be at this time of the year? Are you heading in the right direction to the destination you want to achieve? I've been working on one of my goals, to become a professional speaker. I have achieved that goal, in that I have presented and been paid to do a speech. I was honored to present at the International Facility Management Association, San Francisco Chapter's Annual Kickoff Meeting. International Facility Management Association San Francisco Annual Kickoff Meeting I presented my Surfing to Success in 2017 keynote address before a large crowd in January. It was a great time with a fantastic group of facility management professionals. I was thrilled to be able to share my program about how to achieve success by using your passion for what you do, or want to do, to propel you to success and going out each day and catching your next big wave and being successful in the years to come. I am continuing to build my speaking business and will graduate from the National Speakers Association of Northern California Speakers Academy in May. I joined the National Speakers Association as well and am continuing to learn more about the speaking business and marketing to grow my speaking business. Spring has sprung as they say, and I am looking at where I am now, who I am and where I want to go. How about you? Are you where you want to be? Are you who you are? Are you heading in the direction you need to go? If you are, share what successes you have had this spring. Go to the Comments and tell the Goal Getters what you are doing and the success you have this spring. Where are you going the rest of the year? We want to hear from you. Post in the Comments Below If not, don't worry. Start now, it's spring. It's time for new growth. I am happy to help you with your planning of and the execution of your goals. • Conformity is the Jailer of Freedom and the Enemy of Growth. ~~ President John F. Kennedy

In honor of Presidents Day this week, I am going to talk about Presidential Quotes. Great quotes from great Presidents of the United States. I'll start with President John F. Kennedy.

President Kennedy as assassinated when I was 5 years old. We lived in Connecticut then. I vaguely remember going down to the railroad station and watching the train go by with his casket. We all like conformity. Today we talk about stepping out of our comfort zone. The knowledge that conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth is not knew. JFK believed we needed to step out of our comfort zones. He took several when he was President. We went to the the moon, he changed politics and he took other risks. As a leader, we have to take a few risks to grow. If we don't we won't change. Anytime you take risks you will change. Without change there is no growth. Don't let conformity keep you lock in your current world. It is like a jailer. If you don't take risks because what you are doing is comfortable, easy, status quo, you will not be happy later in life. Doing what we want is freedom. Freedom to choose, freedom of thought. I'd love to see you step up and break the chains of conformity and be the person you want to be. Be Free, Take Risks! How are your goals coming this year? Are you having problems already keeping up with tasks you need to accomplish? Do you need an accountability partner or someone to walk with you and help you keep on track. Check out my coaching page. I have a plan that can help you. I'll help keep you on track as we work together to accomplish your dreams.

  • Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

    Quote by President Calvin Coolidge

Hi Goal Getters, I've done a couple of my last speeches at my Toastmasters clubs about Persistence. I was backup speaker at Cable Car Toastmasters one morning and our Grammarian, Mike Kress, selected the word Persistence for our Word of the Day. That triggered my mind about the a quote I had heard years ago. The quote and the thought behind it has stayed with me since I first heard it when I was a kid. No, I didn't hear it directly from Calvin Coolidge.

I have a few years on me but not that many. Mikes word choice and events going on in my own life prompted me to write the speech about my youngest daughter, Courtney. Courtney was about to graduate from College. Within the next several weeks she will earn her degree that she started in 2007. That's 9 years ago. Today, I am recording from Manhattan, Kansas where I watched Courtney walk across the stage and receive her diploma and mover her tassel from the right to the left. She is now a college graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science.

Courtney had persistence. She started in 2007 at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. In 2010, she was convinced by her then partner to transfer to K-State. She liked the school and thought it would be a good idea. The cost was less expensive as an out of state student the the tuition at Berry College in our own state. However, after moving to Kansas things took a turn for the worse and she had to move back to Georgia. I had relocated to California and Courtney was on her own in Georgia. She worked and eventually was able to get back into K-State online. Over the next 5 years, she continued to work full-time and go to school online.

This week, she graduated. It took her 9 years to complete her degree, but with her persistence and determination she was able to accomplish her dream and earn her degree in Animal Science. This determination and desire are what prompted me to do speeches about Persistence and Determination. I want you to know that if you have persistence and if you know your Why you can overcome your obstacles and walls that are built in front of you. You can succeed. Your goal may have been to do it in 4 years, or 5 but it doesn't matter how long it takes you. If you believe in the dream, if you believe in yourself, you can triumph.

I was talking to the server at dinner the night before graduation and she was undergoing a similar hardship. She had moved to Manhattan to attend K-State and had encounters some obstacles and had to drop of school. She was attending Manhattan Technical College currently but wanted to go back to K-State to earn her degree in in Juvenile Oncology. She said my daughter's story of persistence had just inspired her to continue her studies and go on to achieve her dream. Go for your goals and dreams. Don't let adversity or obstacles stop you. It may slow you down, it may deter you for a time, but if you keep you Why in your mind, if you persist with a dogged determination, you will succeed.

Go Out Today and Be Determined. Persist Past the Pain! Persistence and Determination Alone are Omnipotent!

Thank you for joining us. I want to let you know that I am offering one on one coaching sessions to help you get the goals you set. Are you getting ready to set your goals for the new year? Have you had problems achieving your goals the last few years. We all need to have help sometimes. Even professional golfers hire swing, short game or other skills coaches. Let me help you set goals properly and hold you accountable. Go out and Make it a great day.

  • Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.

    ~~ Abraham Lincoln

Turn New Year's Resolutions into New Year's Realizations

It's the end of the year and like millions of people in the United States and other countries and possibly even on other planets you are probably thinking about making your usual New Year's Resolutions. Well, don't make your usual New Year's Resolutions because they don't work. I talked about this last year and I am going to mention it again this year. Why, because you keep making New Year's Resolutions when they don't work. But they could. I'm going to tell you 3 ways to turn your New Year's Resolutions into New Year's Realizations. Be Specific Don't just make generic, broad, vague resolutions. I will lose weight this year. I will get a new job this year. I will improve my grades this year. I will be make more money this year. Your resolutions should be more specific. You should tell yourself and the universe exactly what you want to accomplish this year. Make it specific: I will lose 25 pounds by September 1st of this year by eating healthier and being more active. I will take a more active role at work so that I can provide more value and I will apply for a more senior position. I will work on my top prospect list each day and double my presentations by August 1st so I can make more sales and improve my income this year. They key is to be as specific as possible so your mind know what it has to do to produce the results you want to achieve. Write your resolutions down. Most people when they set their New Year's Resolutions simply say they will do them. In their mind they think about what they want to do. The use of visualization is a powerful tool. However, if all you do is say that you want to do something, it doesn't really register in the mind. You want to put it down on paper. Put the paper where you can see it everyday and then use the mental act of visualization as you read it to picture yourself achieving that resolution. Seeing the words will register in your subconscious mind more and as you visualize yourself achieving it your mind will start believing it. Draft an Action Plan. After you've written down the specific resolution you intend to achieve, you must draft a step by step plan to achieve it. This is the step that most people forget to do. They may write down a specific resolution but they fail to figure out what it will take to achieve it. It's like we expect Santa Claus to bring it down the chimney at the end of the year and Poof, we achieved our New Year's Resolutions. But as we know Santa won't come and bring you your resolution. It's not magic. It takes action. Create an action plan. I guarantee, if you do these 3 steps for each New Year's Resolution, you will turn more of them into New Year's Realizations. I'm looking forward to a fantastic new year. I have had a great year this year. Thanks to you. Thank you for sticking with us here at Goal Getting Podcast. This is one of my passions and my desire is to inspire. I set my goal for the next part of my life to inspire one person every day. #Inspire1 is my hashtag for this year. Can you do your best to inspire one person every day? Let me know how it goes. Tweet me at @GoalsPodcast with the Hashtag #Inspire1 when you have done something that inspired someone. Leave a comment telling us what you want to inspire others to do. Let us know how your doing. Go out and make New Year's Realizations not Resolutions next year.

  • "If you want to make an easy job seem might hard, just keep putting it off."
    ~ Olin Miller

Are you a procrastinator? I saw this quote today on an article on Huffington Post by Romi Grossberg. I've put a link to her article in the show notes.

As a contributor on Huffington Post, I like to follow and read great writers on there. If you have been listening to the show lately you know that I have been focusing on procrastination the last few episodes.

Why, you ask? Well, a couple of reasons.

I have a coaching client that has been dealing with it in his life and I want him to know that it is something that many people encounter and it can be overcome. I have been dealing with it over the last few months. Yes, me. If you've listened to the show you know that I had stopped posting episodes for a while. I went from posting the Quote of the Day 6 days a week to 3 shows, then to one, then to zero for a few months.

Procrastination is most frequently, in my experience and studies, the result of dealing with Fears. I've talked about the different fears that people face. One of my favorite books by Napoleon Hill is Outwitting the Devil. This book is about the six fears the Devil uses to keep people from achieving their dreams.

6 Fears Cause Procrastination Fear of Criticism Fear of Ill Health Fear of Loss of Love Fear of Old Age Fear of Death Fear of Poverty

Have you been suffering from any of these?

In his book, Hill talks about the Devil saying his favorite of these is the Fear of Poverty. This is especially useful in his fight against those with entrepreneurial spirit. The person that wants to better their life, to try something new, to get out of their comfort zone is often afflicted with this fear, whether they realize it our not.

This is the one that has hit me on a couple specific occasions. It struck hard in 2008-2010 when I was in the lending industry as a Loan Officer and the market crashed. I was married at the time and had a daughter in college. The thought of not being able to provide for them weighed heavily on me. We lost pretty much everything at that time.

I have been going through the same fear lately. I have specific legal financial commitments now and it has impacted my thought processes. The fear of not being able to meet those commitments has affected me mentally.

The key to overcoming this fear, and any fear, is to recognize it for what it is, a fear. When you put a name to that fear and know that it isn't you, but the fear, you can then overcome it.

When you recognize this as fear, the key is to take action. If you've created an action plan to achieve your goals, start taking action, now. By taking action, your fear will dissipate. The more action you take each day, the easier it will be to achieve your goals.

The farther behind you get in your goal, the harder it seems to become. The more you put off, it seems so much more difficult to get to where you want to be.

Romi's article on Huffington Post talks about the 5 Minute Rule. I like this rule. Ask yourself if you have 5 minutes. Trust me, you do. Tell yourself and then do something on your action plan for 5 minutes.

If you are writing a book, sit down and write for 5 minutes.

If you are getting in better shape, do sit ups for 5 minutes.

If your goal is to spend more time on self improvement, turn off that TV for 5 minutes and read a chapter out of that book for 5 minutes.

Take Action! Do what you need to do to move forward in your goal. Don't be a procrastinator. Start small and get back into the rhythm of the plan. That's what I have been doing. I started writing, recording and publishing episodes again.

You can take action and achieve your goals. Don't put it off. Start with 5 minutes. It will build up.

Go Out Today and Take the Action to Move Forward - 5 minutes at a time if you have to. Just Start Now!

  • “Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear. Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow. But any action is better than no action at all.” — Norman Vincent Peale

Has fear taken your confidence from you? Are you afraid to try to achieve your goals? Action is the great restorer and builder of confidence. This is the first quote I think I've shared by Norman Vincent Peale. He is one of my favorite authors and I originally read "The Power of Positive Thinking" when I was in my teens and firmly embraced the belief in Positive Thinking. I remember talking to the pastor of my church after a service one Sunday morning. I told him how I had read Dr. Peale's book and was now a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. He looked at me with his sad-eyed look and said, "Tony, that's bad. You need to face reality and not positive."... WHOA! What. I don't remember anything else after that point. That was my last service at that church. I would not be involved in a church with a pastor that had a negative attitude. I didn't believe that God was a negative force. I believe God wants you to be always believe in being positive. But that's not the point of this episode. I am excited about this quote because it's about Action. I am also a firm believer in action. Action, as Dr. Peale says is a builder of confidence and a great restorer. I have seen this in Action in my life. A couple years ago I was having a very bad moment in my life. I had lost a lot of my self confidence. I decided I needed to do something to improve my confidence. I decided to attend a Toastmasters meeting. I used to do training and a lot of presentations. I was used to talking in front of people. You wouldn't be able to tell it from my first Toastmasters meeting. Taking that action, doing something, started to build my confidence back up. I went on to take some marketing courses at UC Berkeley Extension. I made good grades, had fun, learned a lot and found my calling. I took Michael Brito's Social Media Marketing Strategy course and developed a passion for social media. Taking the action to start at Toastmasters rebuilt my confidence. It prompted me to take other actions. Once I found my calling, I took action to start this podcast, write my book, 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement and start working on my my next goal to become a professional speaker specializing in inspiration and goal achievement. Action is a great restorer. Taking action allowed me to build my confidence back to where it was before and beyond. Are you having a moment in your life where things are not going as well as you want it to? Are you not achieving your goals? Do you need to boost your confidence? I know how to help and I want to help you. I want to show you how you can be the best person you want to be. It takes action. You have to be willing to take the first action and that is to get started. Getting started helped me grow and now I want to help you. This is why I started my coaching services. I'd like to thank Jessica Krampe with Success Magazine for sharing this quote in her article 7 Motivational Quotes to Help You Face Your Fears (Because Worry Never Fixes Anything)

  • “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” – Abraham Lincoln

Hustle. Hustle if you want the best. You've probably heard the old proverb, "The early bird gets the worm." I think this is in the same vain and more specific. The real thought here is that if you aren't early you won't get a worm, but more than likely you'll have to wait around until it rains and grab the old drowned worm off the sidewalk because all of the other fresh, squiggly worms will have already been taken by those birds that get up and go out to look for the worms while they are crawling out of the ground, fresh and lively. I mean, that's how I would like my worms if I ate worms, not the soggy old drowned worm or the dried up worm jerky on the sidewalk. OK, gross worm talk, but Honest Abe was telling the truth here when he said that you can get good things even if you wait, but the better things will come to those who hustle and get out there early. I don't know if Abraham Lincoln actually said this quote. Did they use the word hustle in the 1800's? Was there a "Charlie Hustle" in the Union Army? I am sure we would have heard of some General that was nicknamed General Charles, Charlie Hustle, Smith or something. There was a General Stonewall Jackson who was named because he sad upon his horse like a Stone Wall or something to that effect. Even if Abe Lincoln didn't say this in those exact words, I can believe that he had the thought as part of his mental state. So if you want great things to come to you, get busy doing what you need to do NOW! Don't wait until tomorrow. As they say, Tomorrow never comes. Don't get what is left. Make what you want to happen Today. This ties into my previous episode about Procrastinating. Goal Getting Podcast Episode S2e48. check it out. • “Success is not obtained overnight. It comes in installments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out. The day you procrastinate, you lose that day's success.” ― Israelmore Ayivor

Good day my friend. Today I want to present a quote for one of my good friends and coaching client that is fighting the battle with Procrastination.

Do You Procrastinate and Delay Your Success? We all suffer through procrastination at some time in our life. If you don't today just wait until tomorrow. OK, that was a bad attempt at a joke. But, for many if not most people it is a constant struggle. It isn't caused by you. Well, not consciously anyway. It is caused by your subconscious mind. The quote is true. We get bits and pieces of our success. When we procrastinate, we lose that day's helping of success. If you procrastinate, that time cannon be made up. You lose it. Do you want to lose any part of your success? Procrastination Procrastination is a tool of the subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind uses Fears to control our lives. The Fear of Failure, the Fear of Success are two fears that are often manifested by the subconscious as procrastination. Our subconscious mind, if not programmed to understand success as a known it will start using fears to sabotage your own success. The Fears of Success and Failure are both the same but different. Don't you hate it when people use that saying - "the same but different". You can't be the same and different or can you. They are the same in that your subconscious mind doesn't recognize success. It doesn't understand it. It isn't positive or negative, it just is. Depending on how we are raised, how our environment was around us as we were growing up, the subconscious mind will view it differently. Fear of Failure If I was brought up within a successful thought process, than I could have a fear of failure. Our parent or may have shown disfavor when we didn't achieve what was expected of us, what they wanted or thought we should do. Because we didn't meet up to their expectations we were derided or not shown positive responses. Our subconscious mind can cause us to think that if we fail at what we are trying to achieve, then we will once again be derided or shown disfavor. To prevent this from happening, our mind set about not letting us complete the tasks that would lead to this activity. Procrastination is the tool, the way for the mind to prevent this situation from occurring. You can't fail if you don't start. But, You Do! Not starting is a failure to accomplish what you wanted to start. Then the mind starts saying the next time, "What, You have never completed anything before. What makes you think you can do it now? The Impostor Syndrome then start to move into your mental house. Fear of Success Our subconscious mind, when it doesn't recognize success as a known, it will often present in the form of Fear Of Success. You start trying to do something that could make you successful and it your own mind starts freaking out. "Wait, you've never been successful at this kind of thing. You can't make $5000 per week. You've never made more than $2500 a month. How are you going to make that kind of money?" The mind, when it doesn't recognize our actions and thoughts as knowns, it will start to sabotage your success. It will do things to keep you from doing what it does not know. It will make you procrastinate. It doesn't matter if that change is positive, it will not recognize you doing it and then do whatever it can to shut you down; to protect you! It's not being mean. It wants to make sure that you are doing what it recognizes as it's own truth. One of it's biggest tools is PROCRASTINATION. " Hey, you have so much else to do right now. Housework needs to get done right now. You need to go work in the yard. Hey, you haven't seen all of the episodes of Justified. You know you can watch them on Amazon Prime, right. Let's sit down and watch just one episode." Unfortunately, that one episode turns into 3-5 and the next thing you know, 3-5 hours has passed and the time you were going to work on writing your book, recording that podcast episode, whatever you goal is. The tasks you need to do to complete them are replaced with activities that do not accomplish your goals. Wait I spent 3-5 hours researching stuff for what I am trying to do. Really? I heard and believe that 85% of research is Procrastination. If we have to do research on a topic to complete our goals, then make that a timed task that you need to complete. Research is important, but don't use it as an excuse. If you time-box for research, you will recognize that your subconscious mind is trying to sabotage you when that time starts getting wasted on other non-productive tasks. Non-productive in the accomplishment of your goals. Your Subconscious Mind will make you procrastinate to destroy your dreams. But you can change that. You can change the unknowns into knowns while at the same time working to achieve your dreams. You can reprogram your subconscious mind to think of this success as a known. You can change your own mind into recognizing that making $5000 per week or even per day is a known. When it recognizes what it is like putting tens of thousands of dollars in your bank account every week or day, it will then stop sabotaging you. It will then start removing those negative voices and limiting beliefs with positive, success-seeking beliefs. That's what I did after I learned The Mental Bank Method and why I incorporate this technique into the Goal Achievement Success System. This is how I was able to go from working at low paying jobs making minimum wage, to $17K, then $37K, then $75K then to $150K plus - without a college degree. Mental Bank You can learn it and use it to help you Get The Goals You Set. You can listen to these episodes where I explain the Mental Bank Method: Episode 34 - Is This What You Struggle With? Episode 35 - Is your Mind Killing Your Dreams - 6 Steps to Stop It Now Episode 36 - Success Is Not An Accident - Take It To The Bank Sometimes we need additional help or accountability partners. It's Time to Crown the World Champion of Public Speaking.

I've entered the Toastmasters International Speech Contest for the last 3 years, since I started Toastmasters. The International Speech Contest is held in most Toastmasters clubs around the globe. This is the only speaking contest in Toastmasters that goes past the District level to the international level. Each year, those contestants that have won Club, Area, Division and District move up to the next level - The Semifinals. The semifinals are held each year at the Toastmasters International Convention. This year it is in Washington, DC in the the United States. It is this week. It is scheduled start August 17th. Yes, it is this week, tomorrow, and I am going to be there.

This year I entered for the two clubs I belong to. My company club, First Republic Toastmasters is a closed club and only open to members of our company. I also belong to an open club, Cable Car Toastmasters. Cable Car is one of the oldest Toastmasters clubs in San Francisco.

I will include a link to our club in the show notes. If you are in the downtown San Francisco area at 7 a.m. on Tuesday mornings and want to wake up with a bang, the bang of the gavel as the club starts at 7 a.m., connect with us and we will great you with open arms. Yes, I said 7 AM. Yes, it's early. Yes, you will have fun and get a jolt of adrenaline to start your day with positivity.

    I'm Not A Semifinalist

I guess I should go ahead and break the news before we go any further. I am not a semifinalist. I did not make it past the Area level this year. I have been to the Division level before, but this year I didn't make the First Republic club, but did win the Cable Car club contest. I won 2nd Place at our Area level contest.

Our District 4 winner, Gina Grahame is a Semifinalist and will be competing this week in DC. Our First Republic club officers are attending the International Convention as well as many of our District 4 leaders. We are looking forward to meeting new friends and are looking forward to cheering Gina on as she goes to get her goal of World Champion Speaker.

I want to be the a Toastmaster World Champion Speaker. This is one of my goals in my path to become a paid motivational speaker.

This episode of Goal Getting Podcast is part of our Back To School Series. I consider myself in school to learn to be a Toastmasters World Champion Speaker. I am learning from some of the best. I watched as Gina ascended from Area through Division, and win the District level awards. This week I will get to watch her compete on the World stage with great Toastmasters. I want to be there. I will be cheering her on and visualizing myself on the stage as well.

What am I doing to learn to be a Toastmaster World Champion Speaker? Never turning down stage time, as 2001 World Champion Speaker Darren LaCroix said on the How To Become A World Champion Speaker CD.

    World Champion Speakers

I have had the pleasure and honor of meeting Hall of Fame Speaker, Patricia Fripp at a couple of our San Francisco Toastmasters events. We had the opportunity to host her for a seminar at one of our First Republic Toastmasters club meetings where she shared some educational and inspiring advice. I learned a lot in that visit. Cable Car Toastmasters also sponsored her for an event in June and again she shared valuable advice about speaking and presenting. She is a dynamic lady and a tremendous speaker. The interesting fact is she actually began her Toastmasters journey at Cable Car Toastmasters. I won't say the year, but it was a while ago. At the Cable Car event, she gave away her CD How To Become a World Champion Public Speaker to the attendees. This CD features Patricia Fripp facilitating an entertaining, action-packed, idea-rich National Speakers Association session with two Toastmasters International World Champion Speakers, 2000 Champion Ed Tate and 2001 Champion Darren LaCroix.

I am excited to meet these two gentlemen at the Convention this week. Ed Tate is speaking Wednesday night.

I had the opportunity to listen to the CD over the Independence Day weekend as I drove my dog, Sophie across country to Atlanta. I had long days of driving and listened to the CD over and over again. I think I listened at least 10 times over the 3 day drive. If you are a Toastmaster or you want to learn speaking skills from two World Champion Speakers, you should pick up a copy. I will have information on how to get a copy at the end of the show notes. I will also have contact information on how to contact Patricia, Ed and Darren.

These great speakers present the exact tips that helped them win their competitions. Patricia also offers several points of advice. She, too, is a great speaker and teacher.

There is so much information on the CD that I won't go over it today, but I do want to share the tip that stuck with me and has become part of my life at this time.

    Advice from a World Champion

Darren offered the audience the tip that he learned from one of his mentors who advised him, "Never turn down stage time." The funny thing about that quote on the CD is the CD starts with Patricia talking about how she was on a tour in New Zealand with a group of National Speakers Association members. She recognized Ed Tate as being the 2000 World Champion Speaker and asked him to give his speech he presented as his final speech for the 2000 World Champion Speaker contest. Ed, on a full tour bus, going 40 miles an hour through New Zealand stood up, grabbed the tour guides microphone and gave his award winning speech. Ed did not turn down the stage time! Ed took the opportunity to tell his story in front of those National Speakers Association members. I am looking forward to hearing his speech on Wednesday night as the keynote speaker at the Opening ceremonies.

I am excited. I am going to do my best to interview as many people as I can from all over the world. I am going to try to interview some of the amazing Semifinalists as well as past World Champion Speakers. After all the best way to learn is to listen to them speak.

    Back To School

So, I will be in school all week at the convention learning how I can become a Toastmasters International World Champion Speaker.

Is your goal to improve your public speaking skills? Do you have a fear of public speaking? You should join a Toastmasters club. I have learned so much. I wasn't a rookie speaker. I have been a martial arts instructor, a crime prevention speaker, I've given seminars on many different topics to audiences from 1 to over 400. However, I didn't know how to speak well.

If you give presentations or hold meetings at work you may need to join Toastmasters. If you are a Startup Founder pitching to an investor or a Shark, you need to be able to present your story well. Toastmasters is a place to learn.

If you don't have time or the ability to attend a Toastmasters meeting, you might need to find a coach. You can work with one of the World Champion Speakers or me. I offer coaching services as well. Perhaps you are a startup founder and need to get prepared to do a pitch. Let me help you get ready. I've attended a few of the events in San Francisco and will be attending more. I have heard some of the pitches given. You are very intelligent, have a great idea or product and have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it (that sounds like a good name for a band..... ). You should be prepared to tell your story and have the investors be just as excited about it as you are. I can help.

Keep listening to the show. I will try to post some interviews and posts from the Toastmasters International Convention.

Contact Cable Car Toastmasters if you are in San Francisco FiDi on Tuesday mornings. We meet from 7:00 am - 8:00 am. It's back to school time

and whether you are sending your kids back to school or you are going back to school, Dr. Seuss always has great wisdom. Dr. Seuss may be thought of as a children's book author, he is really a life author for everyone.

If you have kids you are sending back to school, you should tell this quote every morning when they leave the house. You should post this quote on their mirror in their bathroom if they have one. It's important for our kids to start early believing they can achieve their goals. This quote by Dr. Seuss tells us that we are off to great places and we can be great.

"There are mountains to climb and summits to reach. These are the lessons to our kids we should teach. Get up early, don't dilly or dally, Go get your goals if you are a Tom or a Sally"

OK, it's not Dr. Seuss, but I gave it a shot. If you are going to school yourself, whether you are young, in high school, or going to college. You will need to set goals. Determine what you want to do, what grades you want to receive. Once you know that, you can work with the teacher to learn what it will take to achieve the grade you want.

Most likely you will have specific tasks for each teacher or professor. Learn what is require and write down what they are and when they are due. That will be the first big step. If you know what you have to do and when you have to complete them, you can then start scheduling your days to work on each task. I like to work on the toughest ones first. If I can knock the most difficult items first, then I should have time to breeze through the easy assignments. How about you? How have you been working on your assignments?

Do you find it hard to plan working on your tasks. Maybe you need some help. You can pick up my Goal Achievement Success System Action Worksheet and use it to outline your daily goals. The measurement worksheet will allow you to track the tasks each day that must be accomplished. When you complete those tasks. I want to help you do great in school. Mom's and Dad's work with your kids or let them work with you if you are the one going to school. That's right. You may need some help from the kids if you are going back to school these days. Even Tiger Woods has someone he works with on his swing.

If you need help, let me know. We can schedule a 20 minute Clarity Call to talk about where you are and what you are working on. We'll talk and give you some actionable tips to get you started. We'll put a little GASS in your goals and get your engines going.

If you want to set up a 20 minute Clarity Call, email me at Tony at GoalGettingPodcast.com. We'll schedule something and get you on track.

Remember. You're off to great places, today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so be on your way.

Go Out Today and Make Today Your Day
  • In life, many thoughts are born in the course of a moment, an hour, a day. Some are dreams, some visions. Often, we are unable to distinguish between them. To some, they are the same; however, not all dreams are visions. Much energy is lost in fanciful dreams that never bear fruit. But visions are messages from the Great Spirit, each for a different purpose in life. Consequently, one person's vision may not be that of another. To have a vision, one must be prepared to receive it, and when it comes, to accept it. Thus when these inner urges become reality, only then can visions be fulfilled. The spiritual side of life knows everyone's heart and who to trust. How could a vision ever be given to someone to harbor if that person could not be trusted to carry it out. The message is simple: commitment precedes vision. ~~ High Eagle Dreams vs. Visions

What's the difference? When is a dream just a dream? High Eagle says that we often don't know the difference between a dream and a vision. Many of us feel they are the same. But are they? What makes one different from the other? Are all dreams visions? Why not? What do you think?

What High Eagle goes on to say is that Visions are more than mere dreams. Visions come from the Great Spirit. They are messages that are different for each person because they are for different purposes in life. These are your life's purpose. This is what I believe High Eagle is talking about. What is your purpose in life?

I think the second part of this quote is the the key to understanding what High Eagle says.

To have a vision, one must be prepared to receive it, and when it comes, to accept it.

As I was growing up, I had a dream. I wanted to be a teacher, to share my knowledge and skills with others. At the time I wasn't ready to receive that vision of where I needed to be. I wasn't ready to accept it.

I thought of other things. I wanted to make more money than what I thought teachers made at the time. I wanted to experience other thrills in life. I wanted to be somebody important. I wanted to be successful.

What happens to a lot of us as we get older, we start wondering if we made an impact with our life. Were we able to be significant to others, our fellow man? Did we live a life of significance and purpose. Sometimes it isn't until we reach this point in our lives that we start thinking about that higher calling, that purpose.

    What is our calling?

    What is our purpose?

One of my favorite quotes is by Mark Twain. It hangs on my wall.

The two biggest days in our life are the day we are born and the day we find out why.

[bctt tweet="The two biggest days in our life are the day we are born and the day we find out why. ~~ Mark Twain" username="GoalsPodcast"]

The day we find out our why, our purpose, is one of the most important days because when that happens we learn how to be significant. We are now ready to receive the vision, we are ready to accept it. Learning our purpose, our calling will turn those urges we have had into reality and we will then be able to receive and fulfill the real visions, the goals we need to achieve that purpose.

    Receive your vision

We have to be ready to receive it and accept it and then we will have the commitment needed to be able to achieve those visions and make them reality. This get's back to one of the key motivators for Successful Goal Achievement - Knowing Your Why!

When you know your why, you will be able to keep the commitment to your visions, your goals. When you work toward your purpose, what you are meant to be, to do, then you will be able to turn your visions into reality. Taking the actions necessary will turn those dreams into visions.

Are you working on visions or dreams?

I think this is why many of us have not been able to achieve our dreams. A dream has no action, no commitment. A vision when realized as a part of your purpose, your calling will be driven by your commitment. Commitment brings action. Action leads to fulfillment and achievement.

Are you ready to receive your vision? Are you ready to accept it?

How could a vision ever be given to someone to harbor if that person could not be trusted to carry it out.

Do you know what your purpose is? Do you need help to understand what you want to be and how to achieve it?

Some times we all need a little help. The best way to get the help needed to understand is to look outside of ourselves and the best way to do that is with someone else's eyes.

    Can I help you?

We often need a coach to help us bring new eyes, new thoughts, new perspective on what we are doing, or not. I use a coach to help me with the visions I have and what I need to do to make those visions a reality. I decided I needed to follow my purpose, my calling to teach, inspire and motivate people to achieve their goals.

I have started offering coaching services to those that want to understand how to create their goals effectively and to have an accountability partner to keep them on track. • Albert Einstein was smart. But you are too. Most of us are smart, but we don't have the fortitude to stay with our problems until we solve them. The same is true for our goals in most cases. Most of use have heard of SMART Goals and follow this methodology as the script when we create and write our goals. Do you set SMART Goals only to feel dumb when you don't achieve them? Don't feel dumb, it's not that you aren't SMART, it's that SMART Goals don't go far enough.

What are SMART Goals? The methodology of SMART Goals was developed for setting business or management goals.

SMART Goals are Specific Measurable Achievable (or Assignable) Realistic (or Relevant) Time-bound

There are several interpretations for each of the letters, but the two most ambiguous are A and R. If A = Achievable and R = Realistic, isn't that saying the same thing? If my goal is achievable, it must be realistic, right? If it isn't realistic, it most likely wouldn't be achievable.

If we are thinking in a business or management mindset, a goal should be assignable. In other words, someone must be able to be assigned to complete it. There must, therefore, be certain tasks that someone must complete for the goal to be achieved. I think it would be smarter to make the A = Actionable, thereby making someone Accountable for completing the action. So maybe Accountable should be the A.

Well, Realistic shouldn't be used for R if Achievable is the A. But if A is Actionable, Assignable or even Accountable, then R should be Realistic. Why? Your goals should be Achievable, wait, I mean Realistic. Well since they both are the same thing they should be either or both; Realistically Achievable.

So, are you feeling dumb already. Don't! Even if you understand what SMART should stand for, it still isn't enough and you probably still feel dumb. You set SMART Goals. You followed SMART to the T. Your goals were set correctly by the SMART standards. But, you still aren't achieving your goals. You can't seem to get the goals your set.

Why not? If my goals are SMART, then I must be dumb. You are not dumb. You just don't know.

What you don't know are there are really 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement. The 9 Steps include elements of SMART Goals but they also contain the essences of SMARTER goals, too. The 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement will make your goal setting successful.

I wrote my eBook, 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement and you can find it on Amazon here.

What are the 9 Steps that will make you feel smart and successful?

Successful Goal Setting Write it Down - Clearly Defined (specific) / Written Goals Be Realistic - Realistically Achievable Goals Set A Deadline - Time-Bound Goals Set An Action Plan - Actionable Goals Measure It / Track it - Measurable Goals Define Your Why - Relevant, Meaningful Goals Visualize It - Believable Goals Make a Commitment - Accountable Goals Reward Yourself - Motivational Goals

If you want to learn how you can put these 9 steps into effect in your life with the Goal Achievement Success System, check out my Coaching Packages here. I am committed to helping you get the goals you set.

If you set New Years Resolutions or Goals at the beginning of the year, Well, the year is almost half over. Where do you stand today? Have you achieved your goals? Are you feeling DUMB instead of SMART? Don't. Let me help you.

  • “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~~ Muhammad Ali R.I.P. Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali, originally named Cassius Clay, was undoubtedly The Greatest boxer of all time. If you don't believe it, just ask him. I remember as a little boy watching Ali fight. I remember listening to him talk and bicker with Howard Cosell, the sportscaster and journalist and a self-labeled "arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, verbose, showoff." They made boxing fun to watch.

The one thing I learned from Ali was to be yourself, be different, be what you want to be.

Ali was a heavyweight in the boxing ring and in life. He fought many boxers and was the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. He not only fought boxers in the ring, he fought the U.S. establishment, racism and stereotype to become one of the most respected sports figures of the century. He was crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated.

Regardless of your opionion of his brash and controversial style, you will always remember Muhammad Ali. You will be inspired when you read about him and hear him speak. His quotes are legendary, honest and insightful.

I don’t run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run towards it because the only way to esape fear is to trample it beneath your foot. When I was growing up, I had the biggest crush on Nadia Comaneci. Nadia was the Romanian Gymnast in the 1976 Olympics that stunned the world with her uneven parallel bar performance. She was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10. Well, I was about 18 at the time and I just thought she was cute! I was amazed at what she could do. She was amazing, and she was cute.

She, like many top tier athletes don't run from challenges. They embrace the challenges and as Nadia said, they run toward them. That is what makes them exceptional athletes. When most of us would give up, would whine and complain, they get out and try to find the way to win.

How do you handle your challenges? What do you do to overcome the obstacles and struggles you have to go through? Do you give up? Do you stop trying to achieve your goals?

Are you a winner or a whiner? I remember when I started my martial arts training in Ninjutsu, we had a T-Shirt you could get that said, "There is no H in Winning!"

Don't whine about the circumstances. Don't complain about what you can't change. Find what you can do and start doing it.

If you have a goal that you want to achieve. Something that you want to be or do, figure out what it is that you are going to have to do to achieve the goal. That's exactly what I mean when I say do. Achieving your goal requires action. It requires you to do something.

My goal this year is to get to 185 pounds. I have certain tasks that I must do to achieve that goal. I can't just sit around watching TV, surfing the web, eating crappy foods. I have to take the action steps needed to burn the calories or eliminate the intake of calories to be able to lose the weight. I have to be smart about it and eat the right foods. That doesn't mean just lettuce and veggies. There are proteins and fats I have to eat. There are certain foods that I should avoid eating.

There are tasks that I must do to burn calories. We could call it exercise, but that sounds like work. Find something that requires movement that you love to do. If you like to walk, walk. If you like to dance, dance. If you like to play softball, football, soccer, tennis, then go out as often as you can and play.

Do you remember being a kid and your friends came over and asked if you wanted to come out and play. I used to run out of the house, down the street go hang out in the woods, climb trees, ride bikes, for miles. This wasn't exercise. This was play. This was fun. Go find something you find fun and active and do it.

If you have a goal, and you have struggles or challenges, run toward them. Fix them, fight them, beat them. Do what it takes to overcome those obstacles, those challenges; just don't run from them. Face the fears, fight the urge to quit and keep moving forward.
