  • GS#966 Recently, while in Seattle, my travel buddies and I had the opportunity to play Chambers Bay, a walking only, public, links style course on the shore of Puget Sound. You may remember Chambers Bay from when it hosted the 2015 US Open won by Jordan Spieth who stayed one stroke ahead of runners-up Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen for his first US Open victory. Spieth, at age 21 became the youngest U.S. Open champion in 92 years, since Bobby Jones in 1923. The reigning Masters champion, Spieth became the youngest to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year, passing Tiger Woods. This episode features my conversation with caddy, Sam Pintar, from holes 15-18.

  • GSfMO #352 October 9, 2012 Barney Adams, founder of Adams Golf, starts part 2 talking about his book “The WOW Factor” based on how he became a successful entrepreneur. For him, every business is a service business. Then he slides into the mission of Adams Golf when he was in charge. We get into a heated conversation on golf equipment and the state of the industry. Golf club makers have 2 concerns; “A&F; Air-born and Forward”. His primary reason for coming onto our podcast was to discuss the Tee It Forward Program that he originated before presenting it to the PGA and USGA. Fred hates the name and lets him know, so we brainstorm new ideas.

  • GS963: Summary Matt Davis, the creator of Puttercup is this week's guest. Putter Cup is an innovative golf hole insert that offers two products: the Speed Bump and the Center Cup. The Speed Bump is a 360-degree raised incline around the golf hole that forces golfers to hit the ball with enough speed and helps correct offline putts. The Center Cup is a hole reducer that shrinks the size of the hole by an inch. Davis emphasizes that putting should be simple and that training aids should focus on concentration rather than mechanics. He also discusses his partnership with the First Tee organization and his plans for future product expansion.
There's even more on this episode! A couple weeks ago PXG renewed their sponsorship of Golf Smarter, and once again, PXG invited Fred out for a fitting. It was completely at our discretion and in no way did PXG or my agency suggest that we include this.

  • GS#351 October 2, 2012 Chances are you’ve heard something about the USGA and PGA’s program to speed up the pace of play and make the game more fun for everyone called “Tee It Forward”. Chances are one of the thousands of courses that are participating in the program is near you. But what exactly is Tee It Forward? Well, you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s not just about playing the front tees to embarrass yourself in front of your friends. Barney Adams, entrepreneur, club maker, and founder of Adams Golf came up with this idea and convinced the PGA and USGA of its merit. This is part 1 of 2 in which Barney explains that it’s a really good idea, despite it’s name. In part 2 for Members Only, Fred pushes Barney for more of an explanation and tries to come up with a better name.

Kelvin emphasizes the importance of individualized instruction and the role of the body in the golf swing. Kelvin and Fred also discuss various aspects of the golf swing, including the concept of a turn in the golf swing and the role of the wrists. They also touch on the importance of investing in a good putter. Kelvin provides insights and tips for improving technique and mindset in the game of golf.
    Takeaways
Online golf instruction can be frustrating due to the abundance of conflicting information and fads.Common myths in golf instruction include keeping the head down and keeping the left arm straight.Individualized instruction that takes into account the player's body and natural movements is key to improvement. The golf swing can be thought of as a throw or a coil, rather than a simple turn. The movement of the shoulders and upper body is a shoulder turn, while the movement of the arms and wrists is a throwing motion. The position and angle of the wrists depend on the grip and the desired club face position.Proper technique and understanding of the club's makeup are important for chipping and pitching shots.Mindfulness and focus on a specific aspect of the swing can help improve performance.Investing in a good putter and getting fitted for it can greatly impact putting performance. Two ways to become a Golf Smarter Ambassador and receive a choice of one of these great prizes including:

  • GSfMO#346 July 14, 2012 Terry Koehler, our resident Short Game Academy expert talks about the importance of a sound fundamental technique that includes balance, grip, pulling the club and more. He says that you should be proud if someone says you swing like a girl. LPGA players are scoring machines and he thinks that we should all strive to mimic their short game. This has nothing to do with Pink Floyd, but he's a huge advocate of "Hey Teachers (and parents) Leave the Kids Alone!", especially when it comes to golf. "You have to learn golf from the hole backward, not the tee forward!"

  • #957: Summary Writer and producer, Matt Ginella returns to discuss various topics in the golf world, including their visits to L.A.B. Golf, the success of the company, and their personal experiences with L.A.B. putters. They also touch on Bryson DeChambeau's evolution as a golfer and his impact on the game, as well as the role of storytelling in golf media. Finally, they explore the idea of bifurcation in golf rules and equipment and share their thoughts on the matter. Matt emphasizes the importance of keeping the game accessible and enjoyable for all levels of players. He also discusses his work with Fire Pit Productions, documenting golf course restorations and renovations.
    Takeaways
Lab Golf is experiencing significant growth and success in the golf industry.Bryson DeChambeau has evolved as a golfer and become more likable, thanks to his YouTube channel and his departure from the structured PGA Tour.Storytelling plays a crucial role in golf media and can have a profound impact on listeners. There is a debate about whether there should be different rules and equipment for professional golfers and everyday golfers.Matt Ginella believes that bifurcation is unnecessary and that the focus should be on the growth and enjoyment of the game for all players. The issue of golf ball distance and the potential need for a rollback is a topic of debate in the golf community. While some golf courses may appear irrelevant due to the distance players can hit the ball, it is important to consider the impact on the paying consumer. There is a natural rollback that occurs with age and physical restrictions, which already limits distance for many players. The game of golf should be accessible and enjoyable for players of all levels, and efforts should be made to keep it that way.Matt Ginella's work with Fire Pit Productions focuses on documenting golf course restorations and renovations, highlighting the importance of preserving and enhancing these community assets. Two ways to become a Golf Smarter Ambassador and receive a choice of one of these great prizes including:

  • GS#345 July 7, 2012 Terry Koehler, CEO of SCOR Golf shares his frustration over the classic design of “scoring clubs”, those critical clubs for under 150 yards, and how there’s been no technology advancement in nearly 100 years. Apparently the introduction of his line of SCOR4161 wedges are receiving the attention they deserve because the improvements of short game performance are documented.
