It was reported this morning that 40 test monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis facility near Yemasee, South Carolina. The company works with monkeys to conduct clinical trials, including treatments for brain disease disorders. People were warned not to interact with the primates, but they were emphasized that there was no danger to the public. There is always the fear that we as a nation would be the victims of biological warfare and how easy it would be to carry it out by some accidental release of monkeys infected with an “unknown” pathogen. As we come upon the Year of the Ox in the Chinese calendar, cattle mutilations are back in the news. On December 22nd, there was a report out of El Paso County Colorado that 30 head of cattle were found dead in a grizzly display of mutilated carcasses peppered across the rural landscape. We can all attribute this to natural and common effect from nature and the environment but knowing the history of the military and their experimentations, we may want to look at farm animals and their uses as lethal canaries in a coal mine.
