As a DJ in the early nineties Chris’ obsession with music led to gigs at some of the early techno raves, held illegally in warehouses around Paris. In these formative years he not only asserted his diversity, flowing effortlessly between techno, drum n bass, hip-hop turntablism and house, but he also invested a large amount of time and energy in collecting an equally electric range of music. His dedication to the art of DJing provided Carrier with a superlative skillset and the ability to adapt to a wide range of genres and environments, whether it’s a vinyl-only set in an intimate club setting or a live set at the legendary Rex or Weather festival.

Besides his long list of high quality releases, and a myriad of influential labels (Adult Only, Chronobrain, Combustible, Taka, X86 and Sound Carrier, plus the more minimal-focused Adult Only Shape) that he has set up over the years, Chris’ recent achievements include albums on Apollonia – ‘Lotus Seven’ with Hector Moralez’ – and the solo LP ‘True Step Locomotion’ on Slapfunk, together with a seemingly endless flow of new music pouring out of his Paris studio.  Driven by an unrelenting pursuit to continue producing music of all genres and to carry on exploring the realms of his own musical imagination, Chris Carrier is an unstoppable force and undoubtedly a legend in his own lifetime.

  • Tapesh has been around the block and then some. Growing up in clubs owned by his father and having interest in all types of musical genres has made the multicultural German a true fanatic when it comes to play and produce music. He’s been making music since his teens and never stopped tweaking, improving and looking for new types of genres to produce. The same goes for his dj-ing. Having released on labels such as Mobilee, Hot Creations, Defected and Suara one can easily tell the variety of musical styles Tapesh has interest in producing. Besides being a studio monster, Tapesh loves touring around the world playing his trademark sound or spend time on Ibiza and play at his ‘Ants’ residency at Ushuaia.

Wanting to always reach the next level music wise, it’s no surprise Tapesh is starting his own label. The imprint is going to be called Akulee and the first release will be by Tapesh himself. The three track EP is called ‘Panus-Fasciatus’ and will be out in May 2016. Akulee is focussing on the high-quality areas of house and techno. Stay tuned for future releases by other respectable artists on Akulee well.

When we sat down with Tapesh we asked how does this mix represented him as an artist to which he explained, “I wanted this mix to be crazy, even crazier than when I’m DJ’ing. The good thing about podcasts is that they give you this possibility. I hope that his mix shows my versatility as an artist. I’m into a lot of different kinds of house music and music in general. I always want my music and mixes to be funky and a bit crazy, I think you can hear this back in this Gangstercast.” He went on to say “You jus know when you attend a Sneak gig or I’m a House Gangster party that you will only hear real house music. There are no compromises and I have a lot of respect for that. Last summer I was asked with whom I would love to collaborate in the studio. I had to choose a DJ from the whole ANTS @ Ushuaia line-up for the summer of 2015. Sneak was my definite choice. He started on a real young age and is still on top of his game, he really is a hero for me.”

  • Episode 84 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by DJ Genesis. Born and raised in New York City, his passion for music was developed at an early age during the golden age of Hip Hop in the late 80s. By age 13 he had his first pair of turntables and began practicing cuttin n scratchin and mixing. By age 15, he discovered House Music listening to a mixtape graffiti legend “Niceo” was playing in his boombox. Todd Terry’s “Can U Party” was on blast and he was hooked ever since and began to explore House Music more.

By age 38, he purchased Ableton 8 and an Akai MPK 25 and started making house tunes. Legendary DJ and producer Norty Cotto signed his first track dubbed “Come On Over” to Naughty Boy Music and from that point on he’s released tracks on labels like Doin Work Records, Juiced Music, Greenhouse Music, Next Dimension Music and many more. • Episode 81 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by Dennes Deen. Some call it classically trained. Others call it old school. Many call it the only way: Dennes Deen earned his stripes as a real DJ. Not as a DJ/producer. Not as a producer who has to play gigs to pay for his studio. Not because his management told him to. Dennes is a DJ. A deeply passionate one, who’s been hustling for 20 years.

One of Austria’s most in-demand DJs with a schedule that takes him around the world, Dennes – who beat 40,000 hopefuls to become a Burn Studios finalist in 2012 – has developed a large repertoire of releases to date on respected imprints such as Schönbrunner Perlen, LevelNONzero, Alchemy and DJ Sneak’s eminent beat brand I’m A House Gangster... A serious moment in any artist’s career, this is one especially significant for him, as Sneak’s ‘Keep On Groovin’’ was the first record Dennes bought as a DJ all those years ago.

I love to play various, eclectic sets, because I find it pretty boring to play the same sound for hours. Thats why the mix consists of various subgenres - but in the end of the days I just want to play tunes with that certain 'groove'. No matter what genre ist is. Thats just me."

He went on to explain, "The 'House Gangster' movement is not just a hype for me. It's a philosophy. A way of living. Some people live Kung-Fu, others would die for Rock'n'Roll, 'I'm a House Gangster' is the way I live since 20 years."

He is one of those rare, charisma-oozing characters, whose musical and mental eccentricity come from a genuine place. He’s never afraid to take a risk to reach new ground. It’s this blend of qualities that has kept him in such high reverence in the electronic field for two decades now, and which has ensured that his music has been a consistently captivating force.

An ever-moving target, his various incarnations have seen him morph from resolute acid and techno warrior to avant-garde nu-skool electro-disco pioneer to the man who gave one of the world’s most famous rappers a new lease of house-infused life long before major labels were putting every urban artist on their books over anemic 4/4 beats.

  • This episode of The Gangstercast is orchestrated by Deron, who is the Managing Director at Paradise Distribution, and Label Manager for Dirtybird. This is what he had to say...

“When I started buying records in 1996, I lived in Portland, OR, and it was primarily breakbeat and progressive house in the stores. While I enjoyed (trying) to match beats, I wasn’t fully passionate about the music I was finding. A buddy from LA came to visit one day and had Doc Martin’s ’Unlock Your Mind’ CD. The very first song was the Cevin Fisher ‘The Way We Used To” acapella, and then DJ Sneak's “Latin Seoul” comes in. With the first bounce of those beats, I knew that was the type of music I’ve been trying to find, and the quest began.

Those specific Sneak beats I heard were literally the spark that inspired my 20 year passion for House music, which has become my full time career.

While I kept on the hunt for anything that sounded like the type of House music I heard that day (with several Sneak records in the bag), it was a couple years before I actually got to see Sneak play live, and it was exactly what I expected—funky, deep, tech, vocals, long mixes, nothing pre-planned …. and never letting up from the first record.

This mix I did for the Gangstercast is based on those bits of inspiration I got from Sneak 20 years ago. Funky, deep, tech, vocals, long mixes, nothing pre-planned …. and never letting up from the first record.

As the world tends to come full circle, here it is two decades later and not only have we become good friends, but I also work with him and his team to distribute his music to the world.
Hopefully to light many more sparks."

  • Cockney Lama was born and bred in Greece, in the city of Thessaloniki. These days he is living in Hackney, East London. Always being passionate for music, he begun his travel through the sounds at the age of 14 by forming his own band with other friends-musicians. He then started spinning his Jackin n classic house sounds in the 90’s, after being inspired by many acknowledged DJ’s such as Alister Whitehead, Carl Cox, DJ Sneak, Tall Paul, A guy called Gerald and many more.

Currently working as a music producer, he has releases on Robsoul, Henry Street Music and Monique Musique. DJ Mag heaped high praise on his single ‘Losing Like A Man’, “A glorious piece of electronic composition. Moody, techy, atmospheric, glisteningly-produced, ‘Losing Like A Man’ is that type of house that you hear all too little of these days. A brilliant release, and no mistake.”

When we sat down with Cockney we asked how does this mix represent you as an artist to which he explained, “this podcast has a mixture of my own tracks with old school and also a bit of jacking! And that's what my sound is. I am jacking old school groovy house.” He went on to explain the House Gangster movement “has been an inspiration ever since I got deep into house music, and now I consider myself a part of the movement.”
