In this Janette’s TV Podcast episode, I speak with British Actress, Writer and Producer, Gaby Dellal, about her new movie, Park Over, that has it’s US Premiere and was named Official Selection at The Santa Barbara Film Festival (SBIFF) this February. Directed by Gaby Dellal, whose previous work includes 3 Generations, Football, On a Clear Day, the film Park Avenue stars Katherine Waterston, Fiona Shaw, and Chaske Spencer. Charlotte (Waterston) runs away from her controlling husband, and fed up with her life of wrangling cattle in Saskatchewan, and returns to her eccentric mother Kit’s (Shaw) New York City apartment, rediscovering the life she left behind. In the process, mother and daughter must face buried truths.
lWe discuss why Gaby choose the cast, mainly Katherine Waterston and Fiona Shaw, for their roles and what qualities she looks for in the actors
l How the setting of NYC and Park Avenue in particular influenced the story and the characters' journeys, and the filming
l What message she hopes viewers take away from the themes of motherhood, rediscovery, and identity
l What inspired her to do Park Avenue. The personal experiences or stories that influenced the film
l What she thinks the film says about female relationships and the bonds between mothers and daughters
l How Charlotte’s experience from her life and husband affect her as she spends time in NYC/Park Avenue with her mother

After years of procrastination and self-recrimination, the film deals with a middle aged woman, Harriet, who decides to upend her life and go to film school in an effort to realize a lifelong dream. Comic adventures and self-discovery ensue. Jacqueline and I talk about the importance of doing a coming of age film around the character Harriet who is already of age, how Jacqueline found a good balance between the comedic & serious tones of the film, what women considering a change in middle life can learn from this film, how the film & characters represent Jacqueline’s experience in the film industry, and more!
