  • Myq Kaplan is a delightful comedian, podcaster, and library-goer! He has multiple specials out there in the world, with more on the way, and he is this weekā€™s guest on Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy.

For never having had a conversation (with each other), I would say this conversation was a success! We get into the origins of his unique name spelling, how gratitude makes its way into Myqā€™s life, what Jack Lemmon-inspired line he often uses to start the day, reasons why he appreciates the French language, how to cling more lightly to things (even those things that we love), and how to navigate the seemingly endless choices and what idea from James Clear (author of ā€œAtomic Habitsā€) made that much more navigable for him.

Thanks for stopping by this week, check out Myq Kaplan and his many works online and on the socials, and be sure to stop by again next week to hear the sequel to this weekā€™s conversation! Ooh, a sequel! Letā€™s hope it lives up to the original!

  • Thanks for checking out this week's episode! It's a little different today, because it's just me - Rudy Tyburczy.

I actually just recorded a delightful podcast with an hilarious comedian who you probably know and love, but I didn't want to rush it out.

So for this week, I made a shorter solo episode, in which I give some life updates, talk about what's coming up, discuss group fitness classes, and share some of my hopes for myself and others. It's actually a good listen!

(And it's only like 20 minutes, which feels good sometimes!)

Thanks for stopping by - I hope you enjoy this episode.

  • Comedian and visual artist (and my good friend!) Abhishek Kulkarni joins me on episode 37 of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy to catch up after his return from yet another art residency (and more!) in Maine. From clueless townsfolk to Mister Rogers in roller skates, Abhishek has quite a few stories to tell. I love hearing Abhi's questions, and how he attempts to blur the lines between science and art.

We also dive deep into his physical and mental health, and how he has dealt with those aspects throughout his life. Growing up in a place that didn't believe ADHD was a thing, what coping mechanisms has he developed over time, and have they impacted his comedy?

We explore the lines between medication and meditation, and how the two have interacted over time. A long-time practitioner or meditation, Abhi gives some background on his experiences in meditation, and provides a few pointers for those thinking about getting into the quiet ritual.

We end on a number of pretty joyful notes, which makes sense when you hear the advice Abhi would give his younger self, and whether or not he takes his own medicine these days. And stick around to hear the prayer Abhi says before he performs, and see if it brings a tear to your eye, too.

  • Check out Rudy and Rob from The Innsiders on this weekā€™s edition of Jokes and the Gym. This episode feels half like two old friends catching up and half like a promo for one of those friendsā€™ podcasts, The Innsiders. We spend a fair amount of time chatting about our travels, as the two of us have both traveled at length across the globe. We talk about our time in Korea, and successes that our friends have found after their time in the RoK.

We connect on our shared love of early bedtimes, severely limiting our alcohol intake, and other healthy habits we wouldnā€™t have considered many moons ago. We get into Robā€™s preferred training split (3 months on, 3 ____ off), his go-to bodyweight workouts, and our differing approaches to putting out content (one of us is definitely NOT a perfectionistā€¦).

So check out The Innsiders podcast, email them at [email protected] if you have worked in hospitality or tourism and wouldnā€™t mind sharing some stories from your time serving others. You can find out more about The Innsiders on instagram at @theinnsiderspod

  • In another movie-heavy episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, my guest Chad Opitz and I talk about many things comedy as well as our love for movies and what itā€™s like for him living in a place that embraces movies. Chad discusses his move to LA, why he did it, some classic character actor stories, and what series starring Billy Bob Thornton you can find him in as an Easter Egg (itā€™s somewhere in season 4ā€¦).

Big ideas in this episode are finding joy in comedy, as well as how to navigate anxiety in the comedy world, including the one change that many of us can make, which my younger self might not have been too happy with. We discuss a new term to me, ā€œbrain zapsā€, and how they can impact you. And I try to coin a phrase about fatigue that may not make any sense.

We talk about writing processes and tracking habits, and how they can help you grow, or how they can be so detailed that thereā€™s almost no use of them. Chad offers his younger self about taking risks and embracing his unique style, while still having fun. Chad is a damn delight, both onstage and off, and I hope you enjoy our conversation. Thanks for dropping by

  • In my 4th of 4 conversations with fellow Oregon Country Fair (OCF) folk, I speak with psychedelic facilitator, spoken word performer, and Whitebird Clinic team member Nitai Alekseiwicz. We have a delightful conversation whose theme seems to be around making distinctions among our actions.

We talk about how to really grok it, the difference between routine and ritual, being prepared versus being ready (and why one of them might not cut it), and some of the joys and pains of living in a town the size of ours.

In her work with psilocybin, we discuss respecting the medicine that you're working with, some outcomes she has seen people experience, and how she has been there for others on their trips. It sounds pretty cool!

Overall, it's a delightfully woo conversation that offers an interesting look into enjoying everything from comedy to psychedelics!

  • In another wide-reaching conversation with one of my fellow Oregon Country Fair performers/comedians, Gene Kailiuli joins Jokes and the Gym with me, Rudy Tyburczy, this week to discuss not only our OCF experiences, but comedy in Eugene, seeing our names in "lights", coping mechanisms, and how his aggressively Hawaiian name confuses people.

We dive deep into our Fair experiences, including the Art of the Empanada, happy heckling during his set, and a wet and wild show which we bumped into each other at, while watching Reggie Watts along with hundreds of other nude, flappin attendees. Tune in to get the scoop!

It's also a fun and value-laden episode, where we talk about ways we regulate now and how we've regulated in the past (Cinnabons, anyone?), what questions we ask to propel us forward, how comedy is like dating, and how to hop to it when inspiration isn't quite there.

  • Thanks for checking out this delightful episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, today with my guest Jorah LaFleur! She and I have connected through Oregon Country Fair, where we're both part of the Spoken Word Camp, where she's been a mainstay for years.

In this convo, we recap our respective 2024 fairs and dish on what we've learned, she shares some hacks for fair prep and survival, and we both talk about what we'd like to feel/see/do more of next time around.

It's also just a gigglefest, as we coin our morning radio tag team duo name, talk about how to enjoy nude saunas, discuss Jorah's three types of hosts, and ponder on a performer's responsibility to and relationship with the audience. We also talk about how friggin rad it is that not drinking is now our default. Booya!

  • "If we can create that magic at fair, we can bring it back in the real world and make sure everybody feels safe, accepted, and loved."

In this heartfelt and laughter-filled episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, my guest Devin Jones and I take a sprawling conversation through Devin's life in Oregon and growing up at Oregon Country Fair, his biggest bomb as a comedian, and how he tries to honor the ones he's lost over the years.

You'll also get Devin's top tips for dealing with fair vibes, what unusual sport Devin loves (I'd never even heard of it), and you might even hear a few of his bars mixed in with some wisdom he's gleaned over the years.

  • In this special Oregon Country Fair episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, Iā€™ll take you on a circuitous path to wonderful Veneta, Oregon, home of the world famous Oregon Country Fair, a multi-day festival in the woods (think Woodstock meets Ren Faire with so much more), which this year celebrated itā€™s 55th year in existence!

My guest this weekā€¦is me! I talk about OCF to open the show, and then youā€™ll hear from be BEFORE fair, and then youā€™ll hear me AFTER fair, too! Kinda fun to have that type of reflection on an event thatā€™s dear to you.

Iā€™ve stayed at fair the last two years, so Iā€™m a newbie for sure, but a newbie who loves being there and is excited to share. Iā€™m so excited I tell the story about meeting Reggie Watts story in both the before and after sections. Kinda like getting anywhere at Fair, you might have to pass the same thing twice (at least) before you get to where you were wanted to go. Ha. Really fun to have those kinds of experiences, though.

So tune in to get the skinny on my Top Fair Foods, my favorite fair memory, what I struggle with physically, how to get lost like a pro, hat guys, why we are rebranding our fair show, how to get the most out of festivals while being good to your body, which headlining comedian we met this year, and so so much more. Thanks for stopping by - hope to see you next year!

  • In this episode, newly re-Portlanded comedian Luke Miller and host Rudy Tyburczy chat about a bunch of fun topics including goatees, seat belts, Lukeā€™s ā€œx-factorā€, and we might even uncover a wrestling rumor or two, so hold onto your turnbuckles!

We discuss Lukeā€™s recent surgery and changes heā€™s made, his aversion to traditional gyms, and how he likes to get in the zone before a show. As two former/current(?) athletes, Luke and Rudy get to talk shop about experiences in athletics and accessing flow state. How do you get into it?

  • Jessica Adel is one of those friends that just lights me up, and I think you can really feel that from both of us in this conversation, which just so happens to be on episode 25 of Jokes and the Gym!

As a talented writer and performer, sheā€™s one of those people whoā€™s just like, suspiciously good at everything. Writing, directing, singing, acting, are just a few of the amazing talents she has. And she's written dozens of episodes of tv shows, so she knows her way around a joke.

In this wide-reaching conversation, Jessica shares so much about what sheā€™s learned as sheā€™s grown and worked all over the world before hunkering down a bit more while working with a nonprofit organization in British Columbia.

We go in depth on some of her favorite workout routines and ways her relationship to exercise has changed over the years. I just love her approach to mindfulness and growth overall. What a lovely time chatting.

  • This was a really honest and fun conversation with my good friend Seth Milstein, Eugene comedian and dad. We talk about a whole host of topics, starting with some movie chat and a lot about his process of recovery. He has a podcast, Hope Fiends, where he talks with others in recovery and Iā€™m grateful for his candid and joyful communication in this conversation.

We get into his role with Eugeneā€™s new comedy club, Olsen Run Comedy Club, and how a club can impact a comedy ecosystem, and how he is able to handle responsibilities now that he has put down the bottle (among other things).

Sober Seth and I close by talking about some of the changes heā€™s made in his life, and how to keep his Tums addiction in check. Check out how he got his handle for TikTok (@SatchmoSteam) and follow on the other socials too (@sethmils). Overall this is a candid and wide-reaching conversation between dear friends about comedy, connection, and health. We get serious and we laugh! How cool!

  • Fellow Feline- and Workout-Enthusiast Jesse Hett joins me on this weekā€™s episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy. We share our deep love of (among other things) cats, the Irish and their bars, and crafting a joke that weā€™re proud of.

A lot of this episode is just two dudes nerding out over their cats, so strap in for some hard-hitting Kitty Cat Chit Chat - which I may or may not be pitching Jesse on as our next podcast endeavor. It was great to finally chat with Jesse, though, as he was someone Iā€™ve always enjoyed since we met at a fest, and had so many shared interests. You can definitely see both of our ADHDs peek out from behind our love of cats, working out, comedy, and a lagging internet connection.

  • In this episode, I sit down with the hilarious Jessica Grant, comedian born and raised in Humboldt County. We chat about the lack of joy of hecklers, her entry as a business owner with a green thumb, and how darn challenging the last few years have been - she's been through a lot! (But has maintained better than most would.)

And yet, she has become a homeowner, started a business, and put out her debut comedy album, "Kinda Sexy". Oh yeah, she is a cancer survivor, and we get into some of the effects of her battle (eyebrows, anyone?), which is actually quite impressive. Tune in to find out what she has learned through this intense process!

I have been so impressed with how Jessica has maintained her mental health through the last few years, all while pursuing this crazy thing we call comedy, and living her best dang life!

Check Jessica Grant as a regular at the Savage Henry Comedy Club, or find her album, Kinda Sexy, on Spotify, iTunes, and so on. Thanks for stoppin by!

  • This is such a delightful episode with my good friend, comedian hottie Sabrena Contreras! We laugh so much from the start, talk about post-nap snacks, childhood power, and how a Velma costume helped us become friends immediately.

We talk about her fresh feelings from her recent move to LA, what she appreciates about Oregon, and how she's feeling about comedy in big bad LA. We also talk about what she does to stay healthy, and to keep her body and mind as happy as possible.

This woman wants to spread joy, and she does a great job of it in this conversation with me. I was smiling from ear to ear listening back to the episode - I hope you do too!
