  • The Saga of Gunnlaug the Worm-Tongue and Raven the Skald
    by
Anonymous; Translated by William Morris and Eiríkr Magnússon

The Saga is a tale of love, rivalry, and poetic prowess. Gunnlaug, a skilled, sharp-tongued poet, and (Raven)Hrafn, another talented poet, fall in love with the beautiful Helga the Fair.

Gunnlaug travels Europe, earning fame with his poetry and gifts, while Hrafn remains in Iceland, close to Helga. Gunnlaug returns and declares his love for Helga but she is betrothed to Hrafn. Their rivalry escalates through biting poems, each attempting to belittle the other. Gunnlaug finally challenges Hrafn to a duel to settle the dispute.

The saga explores themes of love, loyalty, fate, and the power of words. It offers a look into Viking culture, honor and customs.

    by
    Mark Twain

Hank and Arthur stay with the women until she dies as well. When they hear someone approaching they hide behind the hut. It's the women's three sons, they escaped from prison and returned home.

Arthur wants to capture them and return them to the lord but a great fire in the distance catches their attention. As they make their way toward the fire they see men hanging from trees in the woods.

Hank and Arthur find shelter with a local couple, Marco and Phyllis, and discover the lord was murdered and his manor set on fire. Arthur is convinced it is the three boys from the small pox hut. Hank says he will tell Marco where to find the boys. Once they are alone Marco tells him he only participated in the events so he didn't fall under suspicion.

Hank and Marco make their way into the village and Hanks invites the local blacksmith, Dowley and others to Marco's for dinner. Hank says he will pay for it all and even buy Marco and his wife new clothes for the occasion.

The meal is served, and Hank makes a big show of paying for the entire meal. After the meal Arthur takes a nap and Hank talks to the guests about their wages, free-trade and the economics of Camelot.

Hank continues to talk about wages and unions of the future. Then he goes too far an insults the blacksmith.

What will happen to Hank? Will Dowley the Blacksmith retaliate? Will King Arthur be discovered?
