In 2013 Matt Farley and Motern Media created Local Legends, a film that has since achieved a cult status as one of the definitive works about working as a creatively and financially independent artist in the 21st century. Eleven years later, he returns with Local Legends: Bloodbath, a metatextual satire that takes aim at celebrity and the image he's created of and for himself. Nolan and Toney watched the film and try to piece together what it means for the Local Legends lore, Motern Media as a whole, and independent filmmaking in 2024.
Also: Toney issues a PSA from All We Imagine as Light director Payal Kapadia, Nolan had polar opposite reactions to Here and Emilia Perez, and an off-the-cuff conversation about anti-war cinema.

We review Conclave, a new Oscar contender starring Ralph Fiennes that asks questions old and new about the consolidation of power and the intersection of religion & politics. Did they Trojan horse a Politics Movie into a Pope Movie? How does this fit into the canon of religious cinema? Then, we make our official predictions for MLB free agency: estimating which star players will sign where, for how long, and for how much money. How will the Soto sweepstakes shake out? The Mets will sign a bunch of big names, but who? And which lucky team will sign Roki Sasaki? The top 20 available players per FanGraphs are all covered here.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series, beating the New York Yankees in 5 games on the backs of Freddie Freeman, dominant pitching, and catastrophic "Yankee defense." We react to the series as a whole, the birth of what seems to be a Dodgers dynasty, what that means for these two teams as well as baseball as a whole, and what the next steps are for 2025. But first: the murder of TikTok's favorite squirrel triggers some repressed memories for Brody, and Nolan calls on Americans to do their patriotic duty this week. We discuss the past, present, & future of the pod; new things we want to talk about and movies to discuss now that baseball season has come to an end. We'd love to hear from you at [email protected]! What what would you like to hear us cover? We wrap up with some thoughts on film composition, as well as the long-awaited Joker: Folie à Deux.

The 2024 World Series kicks off on Friday, and the coastal elites are rubbing their hands together and cackling as the New York Yankees head to LA to take on the Dodgers in one of MLB's all-time most anticipated matchups. Morgan's back as we preview the upcoming battle, dive deep into both rosters, and try to put into words the feeling of watching our favorite team win their first pennant in 15 years. First, we recap ALCS Games 4 & 5 in Cleveland and NLDS Game 6 in LA, saying our goodbyes to the Guardians and Mets.
A star-studded World Series will see Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Mookie Betts, Giancarlo Stanton, Gerrit Cole, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Freddie Freeman, Tim Hill, Jazz Chisholm, Teoscar Hernandez, and many, many, more. Who are these guys? What are their stories, strengths, weaknesses? As Morg presents his 7 Tips to Win the World Series, we try to figure it out.

The Mets won a do-or-die Game 5 at Citi Field on Friday to force a trip back to LA, while late-game heroics from Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry kept the Guardians alive in a wild Game 3 in Cleveland. We recap the past week, including five consecutive NLCS blowouts and a possible turnaround in Aaron Judge's postseason narrative, plus a new vote of confidence in the Dodgers, and an update on how potential World Series matchups might stack up.
Plus: Basing underdog narratives on payroll, $1,000 World Series nosebleeds, Tropicana Field ravaged by Hurricane Milton, Twins & White Sox might be for sale

The Divisional Series are coming to a close, and both the Yankees & Mets have locked up spots in the final four. As we await Games 5 in Los Angeles and Cleveland, we try and make sense of the playoffs thus far. Detroit continues winning with only one real starting pitcher, Emmanuel Clase is human, and the Padres antagonize the Dodgers. What's next for the Astros and Orioles? Morgan's back on the pod to bid adieu to the Phillies, dedicate the episode to Brandon Backe, and lament the end of the SP3 going 7+ innings in the playoffs. Bonus content at the end as we react live to the ending of Yankees-Royals Game 4 and look ahead to a weekend of elimination games, predicting the chaos ahead for the Dodgers, Padres, Guardians, and Tigers.

Shohei Ohtani went nuclear on Thursday and we're still trying to make sense of it. Brody got to see a movie he worked on for a long time, Aaron Schimberg's A Different Man! We discuss his experience on set and in the theater, as well as the future of the expanded playoffs. Also, we celebrate the life of James Earl Jones, a legend of baseball & cinematic history who passed away recently at age 93.

Brody’s on vacation in Italy, so Nolan is joined by Toney Brown for a marathon conversation about a nightmare birthday series at Citi Field, the surging Mets and a heated NL Wild Card race, MLB debuts for Dylan Crews and Rhett Lowder, the biopic Ronald Reagan deserves, the Fennell-ification of Zoe Kravitz, and a brand-new thriller from M. Night Shyamalan. The dog days of Summer are behind us, as World Series contenders are hitting the gas and the stench of Deadpool fans is finally leaving the cinema. We look ahead to the next few months and what to look forward to.

For our 50th episode special, we're giving our raw thoughts on all 30 MLB teams with a max time of 90 seconds each. Split into contenders and non-contenders, we ask what the struggling teams need to do to get back into contention and how the contenders can bring home a World Series title in 2024. Also, Backyard Baseball is back, Paul Hines had a fun 'stache, and DJ LeMahieu is cooked beyond belief.

We're joined by our London/Philadelphia correspondent Molly Thomas to discuss the 2024 Phillies, the trade deadline, the ups and downs of a long season, and why even the best teams in baseball can have long stretches of near-unwatchability. Plus, no-hitters from Dylan Cease and Blake Snell, and a season-ending injury to Mike Trout.
What movies have the three of us watched recently? Molly paired I Saw the TV Glow with The Last Picture Show for a bad-vibes-hometown double feature and watched an Agnes Varda classic. Brody caught up with Killers of the Flower Moon, and we discuss its impact a year later. Nolan watched a trio of John Carpenter films: They Live, Prince of Darkness, and Big Trouble in Little China.

The 2nd annual mock draft from Mudville and Prospect Sauce! The MLB Draft will take place on Sunday night, and the next crop of young big-league talent is nervously waiting to hear their names called. We break down various factors that go into the draft process and mock drafting as a concept, before going into the 30 players we think will hear their names called in the first round. Will the Guardians select Charlie Condon or Travis Bazzana at 1.01, or will they swerve and pocket the bonus pool money for later in the draft? How do we evaluate the second and third tiers? It's all happening here on Mudville.

We're past the 4th of July, which means its time to do a few things: come to terms with the fact that fireworks are overrated, and cook up hypothetical trades for MLB teams to make at the deadline. We discuss Gus Weyhing, a struggling DJ LeMahieu, a surging Garrett Crochet, and a few teams that could become sellers. The Rays, Jays, Rangers, and Cubs have been massively disappointing, while the Cardinals have started to surge. The cluster of "contenders" in the National League throws another wrench into things...

Celebrating and remembering the life of Willie Mays, one of baseball's greatest superstars who passed away last week at the age of 93. Mays hit 660 home runs, made 24 All-Star games, and etched his name into the fabric of the game forever. We gaze in awe upon his impenetrable legacy, and wonder where the game goes from here.
Also: Atlee Hammaker; Tennessee wins the College World Series; James Wood debuts; Orelvis Martinez suspended; Guardians, Mets rolling

It's the College World Series! We're psyched to break down the first few days of action in Omaha, especially the electric Day 1 matchup between Tennessee and FSU. We're less psyched to discuss the five gambling suspensions handed down by MLB, including a lifetime ban of Tucupita Marcano. We ask how MLB can play both sides of this bubbling issue without losing its credibility and worsening the baseball experience for fans and players alike. We recap the 3 game series between the Yankees and Dodgers, injuries to Mookie Betts and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the debuts of Drew Thorpe, Adael Amador, Tyler Locklear, Cade Povich, and Hurston Waldrep.

We discuss Bertrand Bonello's THE BEAST starring Lea Seydoux and George Mackay, a beautifully nightmarish odyssey across time and reality. Have we reached the post-Twin Peaks: The Return era of cinema, or is this a one-off achievement? Nolan and Toney share eerily similar real-world interactions involving Guy Ritchie, pay tribute to the late great Roger Corman, and read an interview with the head of Sony Pictures, Tom Rothman.

We review the most obscene entry yet in the 2020s Brand Movie canon, and potentially the nadir of American cinema: Jerry Seinfeld's UNFROSTED, before paying tribute to the good kind of cultural document: Inside the NBA on TNT. We then break down the first 3 starts of Paul Skenes' big league career and find what's making the league's hottest teams click. The Yankees and Phillies are rolling in the month of May, and the AL Central is back to relevancy thanks to blistering starts by the Guardians and Royals. Can they keep it up?
Players discussed: Paul Skenes, Aaron Judge, Alec Bohm, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Bobby Witt Jr, Kyle Tucker, Aaron Judge, Shota Imanaga, Blake Snell, Cole Ragans, Colt Keith, Masyn Winn, Bryson Stott

Highlighting a few major storylines from the first month of the season, including Gunnar Henderson's MVP pace, Home Runs being way down across MLB, the epidemic of long-term arm injuries amongst the league's best pitchers, and which traits we're looking for in the next generation of young hurlers. We end with Who's Real & Who's Not, breaking down teams we like or dislike a bit more than on Opening Day. Also, Jerry Seinfeld and his pop tarts are back on some bullshit.

For the past month, baseball media has been dominated by a gambling scandal involving Shohei Ohtani's interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, and some of the most cartoonish figures in the greater Los Angeles area. This week, a criminal complaint was filed against Mizuhara, and we brought on our legal correspondent Will Cooper to break down the absurdity and ineptitude of the details surrounding this case, as well as the implications for Ohtani himself.

The 2nd annual Mudville AL Preview is here, and we're breaking down all 14 teams across the country and one weird one in Canada. We banter about who will win the daunting AL East, Juan Soto's effect on the Yankees, why we want the Rays to fail, if Brody will predict Cleveland to win 100 games again, and if the Oakland Athletics should be forcibly removed from Major League Baseball.
