  • Fáilte ar ais go Navigating New York! On this episode I chat to TikTok sensation @Vivienne_in_nyc

Vivienne is a new arrival to the Big Apple and her energy and enthusiasm is infectious! It is truly mind blowing to see what Vivienne has achieved in less than a year here - Vivienne is a brilliant example of what you can achieve with a little bit of self belief and, as she puts it, some "chancing of the arm"!

Even as someone almost a decade older, I draw so much inspiration from Vivienne - she is unapolegitcally authentic, and that authenticity has amassed her over 150,000 followers on TikTok!
Through social media, Vivienne is promoting the Irish Language and making Irish culture more accessible to an Irish American audience.

If you are a newcomer to New York, or perhaps you are considering a new venture - you will get so much from this conversation!

Thank you so much for listening!

  • In this episode of Navigating New York, I caught up with my friend Andrew Lynch. I met Andrew last year in New York, and ever since, I've been fascinated by his story. Andrew is the founder & CEO of Mason Alexander, a talent solutions company he started in Ireland that has expanded internationally, and more recently Andrew started a new business venture starting a company called Enable, a digital services company sourcing engineering teams for clients across the globe.

Beyond his impressive resume, what is really striking about Andrew is his relentless drive for progress, not perfection. In our chat, he is honest about the highs and lows of growing in business and why he's all in on what he does. I really enjoy Andrews energy and honesty - and its clear why he is a successful team leader. I hope you are as inspired by Andrews message as I am!

  • Back by popular demand! I was so thrilled to get to sit down and chat to one of my first ever guests on Navigating New York, Maurice Barron. Maurice spoke to me in February 2021 after what had been an extremely challenging year for he and his wife Kandice as their baby girl, Ava, was diagnosed with a rare form of Kidney Cancer with an extremely low survival rate.
In our 1st episode, Maurice shared some of the darkest and most challenging moments they experienced during Ava’s treatment. Maurice also spoke about how First Lady Jill Biden’s book helped him find moments of joy as often as he could.
During this time, Maurice sent a letter to the President of the United States about the journey Ava was on, and how inspiring the Biden family had been for them during their darkest moments. What transpired from that letter is a story of hope and belief. I am so thrilled to report that Ava is healthy, happy and changing the world one day at a time! I hope you enjoy this inspiring conversation.

  • On this episode of Navigating New York, I got to visit the world renowned Dead Rabbit Pub in Lower Manhattan to chat with Managing Director and Co-founder, Jack McGarry.

This episode is one of the most powerful interviews I have ever had the pleasure of hosting. I chat to Jack about his story; from being a glass collector in his local family pub in Belfast at age 15, to being awarded world’s best bartender in his early 20’s in New York, to where he is now – a dynamic, influential entrepreneur on a mission to redefine the Irish Hospitality experience and promote the ‘Ireland of today’ on a global scale.

Jack speaks with rigorous honesty about his journey – the good parts and the bad. He shares some valuable advice on what it takes to be successful in running and scaling a business (Jack was recently named in Crain's New York Business 2023 class of 40 Under 40) as well as his own methods for constant self-development and evolvement.

Jack is making a major contribution to Irish Culture in New York and his mission to challenge the stereotypes and synthetic representations of Ireland across America is one that is consistently building momentum and recognition. On top of being extremely inspiring, Jack is also one of the humblest people I have ever come across. It was a real pleasure to get to sit in the Dead Rabbit and chat with Belfast’s own, Jack McGarry.

  • On this episode I chat to Shelly Hackett and Amy Brett, Founders of Slainte Retreats.

Slainte is the Irish term for 'good health' and that is exactly what Slainte Retreats and Workshops are centered on: experiences that promote women's health and overall wellbeing. Founded in February 2022 Slainte has seen hundreds of women attend their retreats and wellness workshops. By creating space for self care , connection, education and movement, Shelly and Amy have been able to use the retreats and workshops to delve deeper in to conversations and education on self care and women's health.

Both Shelly & Amy have a strong connection in the Gaelic Football community in New York, and in this episode we chat about the challenges of living in NYC and their tips for getting the support you need when Navigating life in the Big Apple.

We discuss what Shelly & Amy have learned over the years in both their personal and professional journeys, what inspired them to take the leap and start their own business and ofcourse, the importance of taking a break - or even going on a retreat every once in a while!

I hope you enjoy this episode! You can find out more about Slainte Retreats by visiting their website

  • On this Episode I speak to one of Irish America’s greatest and most respected writers; Peter Quinn.

Peter is a Novelist, Political Historian, and Foremost Chronicler of New York City. Peter was hired in 1979 by Governor Hugh Carey as his chief speechwriter. He continued in that role under Governor Mario Cuomo, helping craft the Governor's 1984 Democratic Convention speech and his address on religion and politics at Notre Dame University. Peter was also chief speechwriter for Time, as well as editorial director for Time Warner, and found an avocation in writing about his Irish heritage. In his first novel, Banished Children of Eve, he explores the after-effects of the vast Irish immigration into New York City following the famine of 1847. Banished Children of Eve won an American Book Award.
Looking for Jimmy: In Search of Irish America, a collection of non-fiction pieces, was published in 2007. Colum McCann has summed up Quinn's trilogy of historical detective novels -- Hour of the Cat(2005), The Man Who Never Returned (2010), and Dry Bones (2013) –have been described as "generous and agile and profound."

Quinn co-wrote the script for the 1987 television documentary "McSorley's New York," which was awarded a New York-area Emmy for "Outstanding Historical Programming." He has participated as a guest commentator in several PBS documentaries, including The Irish in America; New York: A Documentary Film; The Life and Times of Stephen Foster, as well as the Academy Award-nominated film, The Passion of Sister Rose. He was also an advisor on Martin Scorsese's film Gangs of New York.

Peter’s knowledge of Irish America is unparalleled and his recent memoir “Cross Bronx” is a one-of-a-kind account of his adventures as ad man, archivist, teacher, Wall Street messenger, court officer, political speechwriter, corporate scribe, and award-winning novelist. Quinn is a New Yorker through and through and it was a great honor to have him as a guest on the Podcast.

  • I am really excited to introduce my guest for this episode, the one and only, Damien Dempsey. It was a dream come true to get to have this chat with Damien, described by many as the "Voice of a Generation."

If you’re a Damo fan, you’ll know that his song “Apple of My Eye” is all about his love for New York City - and in our conversation he tells me about how coming here as a young musician helped him to believe in himself and how he met some of his greatest friends and mentors here in the City.

As a young musician in Dublin, Damien felt that people looked down on him for writing songs about the social issues of modern-day Ireland, and for singing in his own accent. These are two important attributes that have come to define Damien as an Artist.

When he was in his twenties, Damien came to New York and played his songs in the famous Manhattan bar ‘Rocky Sullivan's’ – which attracted an eclectic group of artists, writers, NYPD officers, lawyers and politicians back in the day. Rocky’s was owned by a mutual friend of ours – retired NYPD Chief of Homicide and proud Irish American, Brian McCabe, who kindly made this episode possible.

When I started this podcast I had a list of ‘dream guests’ and Damien Dempsey was one of them - so I am beyond grateful that I got to have him on

In this episode Damien speaks honestly about the shame and guilt we have been forced to feel as a Nation, His respect for the Irish that travelled the world and set down a framework for future generations and the importance of spirituality, of travelling the world and how music can help us through life.

I really got so much from this conversation with Damo and I hope you find some comfort and inspiration from his message.

  • On this week’s Episode I speak to MacDara Hosty a man I had the pleasure of meeting this Summer in NY when he was here to launch Project Empower.

In June of 2022 lifelong Galway friends Damian Browne and Fergus Farrell set off on an unsupported row in a 6 meter boat across the Atlantic from New York City to Galway to raise money for four important Charities: Ability West, Galway Simon Community, MADRA Dog Rescue and NRH Foundation

However, after two weeks out at Sea due to a serious medical condition Fergus had to be rescued from the Boat and Project Empower has since been 1 man rowing now for about 3 months across the Atlantic. Toward the end of this week, Damian Browne is set to finally complete Project Empower and row in to Galway Bay!

MacDara has been pivotal in the Project Empower Team and helped to oversee much of the preparation, fundraising and management of this unique project. I talk to Mac about how Project Empower came about, Damian and Gussy’s own inspirational stories, the challenges throughout the Project, how inspirational it has been to be able to track the journey live and the penultimate homecoming for Damian in Galway this weekend.

If you want to support Project Empower go to projectempower.ie
    Follow along on Instagram @projectempower2022
And I highly recommend checking out Damián's podcast, live from the Atlantic called Deep Roots.

Also if you happen to be in the West of Ireland this weekend, Damian’s approximate homecoming time will be posted on the project empower socials. - right now they are estimating between Friday Sept 30 - Sunday October 2nd.

  • On this episode of Navigating New York I speak to Freya Drohan, Executive Fashion Director at The Daily Front Row. Freya is from Malahide in Dublin and has been living in New York for 7 Years. After graduating with a degree in Journalism, Freya moved to New York with the dream of becoming a fashion journalist. Freya is now a Director at one of the most prestigious and respected digital and print Fashion Magazines in the Industry. Earlier this year the Irish Independent listed her as one of "17 Irish people killing it on the world stage"

Freya is refreshingly honest about the hard work and determination it has taken to get to where she is today, as well as the realities of working at A List Fashion events, how fashion marketing has changed the industry, and how important it is to get your foot in the door.

Freya’s passion for what she does and her love for New York City really makes her the perfect guest for this podcast. Although her job is incredibly demanding and the fashion industry moves at a pace like no other, Freya acknowledges that she is doing what she once dreamed of doing. One thing she said that really stood out to me was “its hard work – but we all have the ability to work hard”

We chat about the grind and hustle it takes to "make it" in New York, the importance of having good people around you, what makes New York so special - and Freya nailed my newest topic “Life Hacks for living in NYC!”

I hope you get as much from this conversation as I did!

  • Happy St Patrick’s week! It is of course St Patrick’s day this Thursday and in honor of that this weeks episode is with two amazing women who are involved with a great organization in NY called Sober St. Patrick’s day. Today I chat to Executive Director of Sober St Patrick’s Day, Tami Ellen McLaughin and Board Member Elizabeth Stack. who is also the Executive Director of The Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany.

The ladies tell me what Sober St. Patrick's day is all about and everything going on with the group this Thursday in New York (and all year round!). We chat about the stereotype we as Irish people face globally and how although it is great to enjoy and celebrate St Patrick's Day – it is also important that we try not to feed in to the stereotype of being a Nation who’s culture revolves around alcohol. I really admire this group for creating a space to enjoy our Irish Culture and Heritage in a way that ensures St. Patrick’s Day is not seen as just an excuse for everyone to wear green and get drunk. What I particularly admire is that it's not a group that is anti-alcohol, but that it creates space to celebrate in an alternative way.

You can find out everything you need to know about Sober St Patrick's day by visiting their website www.soberstpatricksday.org or by following them on twitter @soberstpatsday and see how you can get involved with them to march in the parade, attend their post –parade party or join the celebrations virtually. I hope you enjoy!

  • Happy International Women's day/week/month!

On this weeks episode I speak to Gemma Allen, the vice president of B2C technology at IDA Ireland. In her current role with IDA Ireland, she is responsible for building relations with business leaders, political stakeholders and key industry players furthering foreign direct investment into Ireland. Gemma has over 15 years’ experience working with the world’s largest technology companies in the U.S. and Europe.

Gemma is from Blackrock in County Cork and is a mum of 2 gorgeous girls: Esme & Edie and Gemma and her husband Leo live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I wanted to get Gemma on to the podcast to hear her perspective and experience as a Woman working in the Tech Industry and how in her role, she channels international investment into Ireland from New York.

I also was keen to chat with Gemma because she is massive advocate for Women and after reading a few of her articles on women breaking barriers in the workplace, overcoming imposter syndrome the challenges that come with becoming a new mum – I needed to get her on. Gemma also shared with me the pain of losing her Mum 2 years ago and the challenge it presented her after just giving birth to a new born and trying to get home to Ireland all in just a couple of days.

You’ll hear that Gemma and I discuss her initiative to create a support group for New Irish Mums in New York and since this conversation Gemma set up an email address to facilitate the groups formation, if you want to get in touch with Gemma about this the email address is:

    [email protected]

"Neart" is irish for strength or unity and "mna" is women. I am really excited to be involved with Gemma's initiative. Since recording Gemma recently became a contributor for NASDAQ and I hope you'll be as inspired by her as I am.

  • Welcome back to Navigating New York!

On this week’s episode I chat to Peloton’s first ever Irish fitness instructor, Daniel McKenna aka Daniel Yankee.

Daniel is 29 and has been living in New York for almost 5 years. Known by his friends and clients as Daniel Yankee, he was born here in the Bronx, but raised in his beloved County Monaghan.

Growing up Daniel says his Mum was his biggest inspiration and is still his greatest supporter. As a PE teacher, she encouraged Daniel to try every sport he could. However Daniel’s talent on the Gaelic Football field is what brought him to some of the highest levels of the sport in Ireland, playing at all levels for his County and winning an All-Ireland Championship with his Club Truagh Gaels in Croke Park in 2014 - putting away 1.7 from play on the day himself. His talent in GAA brought him to Boston and Chicago and Daniel eventually followed his aspiration to move to New York in 2017 where he had been recruited to play for Sligo GAA. The day after he landed at JFK, he started laboring as an electrician in Lower Manhattan, and his new adventure began.

Daniel did what he could to make ends meet while he pursued his dream of becoming a fitness instructor on the side. Early mornings and late nights working 2 jobs, travelling the length of Manhattan every day took a toll on Daniel but he never stopped hustling. After he got one lucky break in a chain of gyms he kept his eyes on the prize and developed as a personal trainer with various certifications and built experience taking as many clients and group classes as he possibly could. During the pandemic, Daniel started his own fitness group, the Irish Yank Society, that started out as virtual kettle bell class people could do from home but as restrictions eased, transformed into a very popular outdoor class down the street from his apartment in Greenwich Village.

In late 2020 Daniel got approached by Peloton to audition to become a fitness instructor for what he describes as his absolute dream job. For anyone unfamiliar, Peloton is the world’s largest interactive fitness platform with almost 6 million members. Peloton peaked during the pandemic because they had already developed a new concept in Fitness using technology, content and best-in-class instructors to empower people to reach their fitness goals at home. Peloton are known for their sleek treadmill and stationary bike you can buy and have delivered and set up in your home, as well as their App for equipment free workouts. It’s well known that peloton instructors are handpicked and become like celebrities within the peloton community! In our chat Daniel talks about the struggles he faced on his way to this huge success and I hope you take as much from his story as I did!
