  • Cody Rhodes may have finished his story, but it's a fresh chapter in the NO ENCORE saga this week as 'The Donegal Dynamo' Hugh Carr makes his podcast return.

Hugh is just back from a trip to Philadelphia - the "best week of his life", apparently - where he took in many live professional wrestling shows, including the Granddaddy of Them All, the Showcase of the Immortals; WrestleMania.

In that infectious spirit, this week's Top 5 concerns the history of that humble grappling event, specifically the many live music performances that have taken place under its stadium-sized roof. And oh boy, have there been some shockers.

We tasked Hugh with giving us a mix of the good and the bad, but it seems that only the most headline-making terrible ones came to his mind. Enjoy?

Hit up our Patreon for exclusive access to bonus content including the debut episode of the NO ENCORE Album Club, out now!

ACT ONE (5:35): Dave gives his verdict on the new Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross film score, J. Cole loses all credibility in record time, Chechnya has a speeding problem, St. Vincent makes a valid point, The Libertines and The Doors finally unite kinda-sorta, and can we stop being weird about Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson? It's this week's music news.

ACT TWO (52:35): Hugh recaps his Philly jaunt, before laying the smack down on his Top 5 Bad WrestleMania Music Performances.

Sonic Architect Adam looking on, beaming with pride, of course. Craig returns to the fold in honour of the brand new Vampire Weekend album Only God Was Above Us, as he details his career-spanning choice cuts from the New York City faithful.

  • Freshly returned from Rome following his marathon heroics, news correspondent and NO ENCORE regular Richard Chambers is back with another batch of pop belters for all to enjoy.

The turn of the 2010s is under the musical microscope this week, as the boys explore the most ear-catching songs of the era - warning: parameters may vary as to what constitutes a 'banger' and what even qualifies as 'a good song'.

Elsewhere, Dave derails the news section, much to Adam's bemusement and Richard's annoyance.

ACT ONE (8:00): Kendrick Lamar, Drake and J. Cole battle it out, the Joker sequel takes jukebox shape, a Bruce Springsteen biopic may have its man, a long-ago Simpsons gag finally pays off, Journey ascend to even greater heights, and Coldplay find themselves caught up in a colourful football-themed vortex.

  • Welcome back to Before The ENCORE, the limited-run that all the music industry podcast collectors immediately order on the last Monday of every month.

Speaking of, if vinyl (or assorted physical musical release formats) are your thing, or you're an artist more about what is involved in getting a record pressed, this is the episode for you. This month, Sonic Architect Adam is joined by Peter Jones of Rotator Vinyl; a physical release broker based in Dublin, Ireland, who specialises in small press runs and independent releases across vinyl, CD and cassette tape.

Listen to Adam and Peter chat about the process of getting a pressing done from end-to-end, as well as the current "vinyl revival" and, of course, nerd out over their favourite types of pressings. All of that and much more in this month's edition.

  • Salut! NO ENCORE is in celebratory mood this week as Dave Hanratty and Sonic Architect Adam hail an act worthy of being named after a spiral galaxy - the one and only M83.

  • It's the most patriotic week of the year and we're barely talking about it, because that's how we roll.

The actions of Irish artists dominate the news section, though. Speaking of, Julie Hough of HAVVK fame returns in honour of new album To Fall Asleep, which is out RIGHT NOW.

Plus - some songs we don't feel all that great about listening to anymore.

The band have just released emotive new single 'Your Last Breath' and we're going to talk all about it, oh yes.

Elsewhere on this episode, there's time for an ultra-brief news section before we get to our shouts for standout spoken word samples in songs. Spoiler - all of them are from movies.

  • It's 2024 and the last Monday of February, which means we're back in the world of the music industry and taking a look behind the scenes all over again!

This edition of Before The ENCORE, I had the pleasure and privilege to sit down opposite Chris Bubenzer, producer extraordinaire and one half of Diffusion Lab. Chris has an extensive discography and is one of the main figures in production responsible for the sea change in sound in Irish music back in the mid-2010s with artists like Soulé, Jafaris, Valarie Rose, whoisdays & Sweetlemondae.

We chat about our roots, moving in different directions, different production styles and how all of those things interact with each other in this episode.

  • Let's get divisive.

NO ENCORE returns with a sequel as Dave Hanratty, Sonic Architect Adam, and returning guest co-host Zara Hedderman join forces to discuss the musical acts that simply do not do it for them.

ACT ONE (3:14): Irish Women in DISharmony, Ridley Scott is 'Staying Alive', The Eagles go legal, True Detective: Night Country takes the needle-drop piss, and Dave's worst cinematic nightmare comes true - it's the week in music news.

  • Broadcast after the fact from Sector 7G in the heart of beautiful Springfield, it's NO ENCORE~!

Recorded on the most momentous night of the romantic year, Dave Hanratty, Sonic Architect Adam, and Mark O'Brien of Enemies and Royal Yellow fame show some love to the first family of animation by listing off their shouts for the finest musical exploits of... The Simpsons.

Before that, we've got plenty of news to catch up on, and some cinema trips, too.

ACT ONE: Dave and Adam went, separately, to the cinematheque. Whatever happened to basic etiquette?

ACT TWO (14:13): This week's music news takes in everything from Brian May's ego to Roisin Murphy's defiance to - but of course - Taylor Swift winning the Super Bowl all by herself.

ACT THREE (46:34): Top 5 Simpsons Songs.

  • Dreams... and nightmares. For what is a dream, and what is a nightmare? And how do they musically manifest?

Dave Hanratty and Sonic Architect Adam intend to find that out, alongside Kieran McGuinness of Delorentos, and now Driven Snow, fame.

Driven Snow, made up of Kieran and former Republic of Loose member Emily Aylmer, release their debut album A Kind of Dreaming this Friday, 9 February.

And so there's no better time to drag Kieran into NO ENCORE HQ for a deep meaningful conversation about his new and highly personal musical union and a great deal more besides.

ACT ONE: Dave recovers from being called out by a listener by quickly moving the spotlight onto all things Driven Snow - get the album, go to the gigs, and listen to our interview, won't you?

ACT TWO (29:05): The 2024 Grammy Awards dominate this week's music news, but there's still time for the Internet to throw Irish hero Ayo Edebiri under the bus, and for Kerrang TV to leave a mark on our alternative music-loving hearts.

ACT THREE (1:07:47): Top 5 Songs About Dreams (Kieran) and Nightmares (Dave).

  • NO ENCORE is back for a brand new season and we've got an entire month of music - and some movies - to talk about.

Dave Hanratty and Sonic Architect Adam Shanahan run the critical rule over multiple news items including the possible demise of Pitchfork, the inexplicable presence of the Mean Girls remake, the equally baffling popularity of Saltburn, the contenders for this year's RTÉ Choice Music Prize, the positive and negatives of Eurovision 2024, and Donald Trump's new favourite band.

And our shouts for our favourite music of 2023.

It's the year in review, with plenty of awards to hand out - some more coveted than others. It's longer than Oppenheimer yet shorter than Killers of the Flower Moon. Truly, we went the distance.

  • NO ENCORE returns for the final regular episode of the year and we've got a blockbuster guest in the wonderful and the amazing Fionnuala Jones.

It's a lively one as the pair clash over modern-day list-based etiquette and consider their shouts for the very best and very worst songs that hit number one at Christmas but aren't actually about the festive season.

ACT ONE (3:08): Dave has an almighty rant and Fionnuala matches him every step of the way, we wrap on Spotify Wrapped, Taylor Swift is TIME Magazine's Person Of The Year 2023, KISS live on(!), and Tom Petty proves that he is a Rockstar in life and death – it's the news!

  • NO ENCORE travels to the wilds of County Clare (actually very peaceful, to be honest) for one week only as Dave Hanratty interrupts his time off to jump into a different studio – with the blessing from afar of Sonic Architect Adam, of course.

Local boy Daithí returns to the podcast, with his faithful drummer and operations manager Alex Ridley for company. With their powers combined, the trio boot up and download accordingly as they get into the intriguing world of diegetic music in video games.

But what does all that mean, you ask? Essentially, any time music is actually in a scene rather than scoring it - something a character interacts with, creates, or is aware of. Yes, it's going to get very nerdy on this episode.

ACT ONE: Catching up with all things occurring in the world of Daithí O'Dronaí.

ACT TWO (9:08): A rare live music opportunity sees Dave break out the gig calculator, Sabrina Carpenter offends the devout, Metallica take the blood money, Kiss Korner returns in dramatic fashion, The Hives plot world domination, and Eminem goes digital - it's the news.

ACT THREE (36:36): Top 5 Diegetic Video Game Music.

  • Sonic Architect Adam Shanahan returns to his Before The ENCORE hot-seat to chat to multi-instrumentalist and touring musician Caoimhe Hopkinson for a brisk November edition. You may know Caoimhe from her co-writes with April, or from touring most recently with Ailbhe Reddy, Pauline Scanlon and the Grammy-nominated Alison Russell, among many others.

In this episode, Caoimhe takes us through how to stay grounded on a larger-scale tour, walking the line of a creative endeavour being your main source of income, and personal projects close to her heart away from the hustle and bustle of the stage.

As always, Before The ENCORE will return next month on the last Monday of December for a final foray into the weird and wonderful world of music industry professionals for 2023.

  • Fire up your iPod Nano - or Classic, if you had such a thing - as we turn the clock back to an era where the tunes were huge, the clubs were hopping, and... to be honest I kind of hate myself for writing that sentence. The music was REALLY GOOD, is what I'm getting at.

Ace newsman, author, podcaster, runner, and friend Richard Chambers returns to NO ENCORE HQ to keep Dave Hanratty and Sonic Architect Adam company on a beautifully nostalgic, endlessly energetic journey.

There's also room for film criticism, concert etiquette, and plenty of news. And a mention for Richard's upcoming marathon in support of Women's Aid - you can donate right here.

ACT ONE: Some fun meandering chat about the Andre 3000 album, Richard's visit to the cinema for the Taylor Swift concert movie, and his jaunt to the 3Arena for an intriguing Belters Only experience.

ACT TWO (15:34): News! Hall & Oates are out of touch, Formula 1 gets another superstar boost, Kid Rock and Donald Trump join forces, and Christmas songs make their early mark. Bonus - Dave and Richard review The Killer and its musical component parts.
