  • It's the 4th of July in the United States this week so Daniel and Mathias thought it would be fun to talk about viking age revolutions, so bust out ye Olde Les Misérables lyric book and strap in. Whether it be women smashing their looms to start a revolt, or locals sacrificing their king to regain the favor of the gods, you had better believe we're going to talk about it. There is also quite a bit of talk about the current political situation in the United States, particularly having to do with the recent decision by the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, so if that's too heavy for you at the minute feel free to skip this one, we understand.

  • Daniel is on the road traveling this week so it's just going to be him and Mathias, no guest to speak of, also the sound quality might be a bit spotty so bear with us. Together they'll be sitting down to discuss the hot internest topic of viking cleanliness. Were Vikings notably more clean than people in the middle ages? There's only one way to find out and you better bet the answers will be complicated!

  • This episode has taken almost 2 years to arrange, so we hope you really enjoy it. This week Mathias and Daniel are honored to be sitting down with Alexander Dreymon, aka Uhtred of Bebbanburg from the popular show The Last Kingdom! Together with the boys Alex will discuss how a lord with no lands might pay the men who fought for him in a pre-currency era, and there will also be a solid 20 minutes on coconut bikinis. Why? It's complicated.

A special thanks to Alex for coming on the show, it was a real treat for us and the patrons!

  • It's a comedy of errors this week as, due to a last minute cancellation Mathias and Daniel are sitting down to discuss the lesser known member of the nordic pantheon from Snorri Sturluson's Edda. On top of that Mathias had to record this one from his campus office, so the sound quality might be a little shaky, please be kind.

Nevertheless we persist! Topics this week include: What's the deal with Baldur? Was Bragi a real skaldic poet? And which god got a mention in the Edda just for being, "good at archery"? The answers will be complicated.

Katrine is sitting down with the boys to discuss her journey in music, and her most recent activity with her band Kalandra, as well as her experiences as a backing vocalist with Wardruna. Other topics include: the challenges of following your passion as a career, why the Midgard Serpent might be a metaphor for drowning, and the infamous coconut biki... It's complicated.

  • This week it's three doctors and one Daniel, as Mathias is joined by fellow scholars Rune Rasmussen, and Australian scholar Tyson Yunkaporta! Regular listeners will know Rune from his previous appearances in episodes 35, and 94. And Tyson is new to the show, but his expertise as a senior lecturer in Indigenous Knowledges at Deakin University in Melbourne is sure to come in handy during the discussion. Topics this week include: The Aun Year, what is it? What does that even mean? And why conspiracy theories like Qanon keep adopting Nordic Mythology. Sounds complicated enough!

Jonas is no stranger to the show and also narrates our Patron only bonus storytime episodes. Other highlights this episode include Jonas sharing stories from the set of a recent music video he filmed in Ukraine, and possibly the most buck wild sentence ever spoken on this show... looks it's complicated you'll have to listen.

  • This week Mathias and Daniel are throwing it back to the old days, which if you're new around here means no guest. The topic this week is everything you ever wanted to know about the Nordic Pantheon Goddesses. We did our best with the subject but as you can imagine when you're covering everything from the original, "send feet pics" story, to why Thor is best girl, it's going to get very complicated very quickly!

  • This week Mathias is out of commission so we are turning to our first ever official guest host Joshua Rood! Together with Daniel Josh is going to be giving a frankly spoiler ridden review of Robert Eggers new movie The Northmen. This is definitely a spoiler heavy review, so if you haven't seen the movie yet and want to maybe hold off until after. However if you don't mind having everything (including the ending) spoiled then dive right on in. Nothing complicated this week, just spicy hot takes!

They also made all the jewelry featured in Robert Eggers new movie The Northmen, and were kind enough to sit down with the boys and share some stories from the set! Together with the boys Kjell is here to discuss his new album: Blóta, which he envisions as not just an album but a Blot ritual in its own right. This time, together with Mathias and Daniel, Martin will be discussing the archaeological excavation of the Pictish monastery of Portmahomack in Scotland. Some one of a kind stories will be shared, and Dan gets so excited he destroys his recording studio… It's complicated.

  • This week is another Mathias and Daniel episode! On purpose! Definitely not because we had a guest cancel on us at the last minute. We're taking this as an opportunity to dedicate an entire episode to the absolute fever dream that is the Viking creation myth, specifically the version in Snorri Sturluson's Edda. So be prepared for some knees knocking each other up, a cow licking a giant to life, and learning that Asgard is actually the ancient city of Troy (also it's made out of a giant's eyelashes, it's complicated).

  • For our long-time listeners who remember our 43rd Episode where we interviewed Mathias, this week will finally bring some closure to the cycle as we're finally putting Daniel in the hot seat! Last time we had Sean Perry on as the guest host and this time we're lucky enough to have Neballa's Jonas Lorentzen sporting his best Daniel impression to fill the role. Topics will include the origin story of Horns of Odin, the story of how Daniel and Mathias started the podcast, and perhaps the origins of Daniel's fascination with Usher... It's complicated.

  • This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Rolf Warming, perhaps better known on this show as: "Shield Guy." Long time listeners will know Rolf as the author of the study Mathias loves to reference re-examining the practical use of shields in battle by Vikings from a martial arts perspective. Together with the boys Rolf will be discussing all viking weapons, but mostly shields, as well as going through a step by step process of everything Daniel did wrong when he made his own shield; as you might imagine the process is more complicated than it looks.

This week Mathias and Daniel are honoured to be sitting down with Alexander Ludwig, who you may know from his new series Heels, The Hunger Games, or perhaps most relevant to this show Bjorn Ragnarson from Vikings! Obviously we can't waste an opportunity like this so we'll be discussing the historical differences between Bjorn on the show and Bjorn from the saga literature, as well as Alexander's fun stories from being on set. For once things are not complicated it's just a straight up win win all around!
