  • We hope everyone is having a happy and healthy holiday season. While we're on holiday break, we're bringing back a few of our top episodes of 2023, and this episode with pro cyclist Alexey Vermuelen is one of our favorites. We talked all about his nutrition experience and evolution, mistakes he learns from - so you don't have to - and training with the fastest cycling dog, Sir Willie the Weiner. Enjoy this episode!

Alexey Vermeulen is an American cyclist who grew up racing on the road after getting into the sport through kids triathlon and inspiration from his grandfather (Opa). After spending two years in the World Tour with Jumbo Visma, Alexey pivoted towards the dirt (gravel & MTB) believing that the sponsorship model in professional cycling was flawed and that he could make a bigger impact where the barrier for entry was lower. Vermeulen has become famous on the circuit for training with Sir Willie the Weiner, a long-haired miniature dachshund that he carries in a backpack while riding. Recent results include winning BWR California, and Iceman Cometh in 2022.

  • In this week's episode - #90! - we talk to gravel and mountain biker - and The Adventure Stache podcast host - Payson McElveen about

Making FKT attemptsHow he got into mountain biking & gravel ridingHow he fuels for training, racing and in the off-season

Born and raised outside Austin, Tex., Payson McElveen relocated to Durango, CO in 2012 to pursue Exercise Science at collegiate cycling powerhouse Fort Lewis College as well as his dream of becoming a professional mountain biker. Following graduation in 2016, his career began to take off, but not necessarily in the manner he'd expected. Rather than pursue the traditional route of XC that involves World Cup racing and Olympic aspirations, he gravitated towards longer events after a career-altering experience at the 6-day Mongolia Bike Challenge. A year later, he won his first professional national title at the 2017 Marathon Mountain Bike Championships, and a second title in 2018, successes that helped land dream sponsor Red Bull. This further spurred a commitment to longer events which were exploding in popularity at the time. Now splitting his time between off-road endurance disciplines and a focus on the Lifetime Grand Prix, Payson has continued to enjoy success at the biggest gravel events in the world, including three wins at The Mid-South, and podium finishes at the Leadville 100, Unbound 200, SBT GRVL and more. While his athletic achievements are notable, Payson strives to have a multi-faceted impact on the sport. Through his popular “The Adventure Stache” podcast, films, and innovative physical challenges such as FKTs and a first single push crossing of Iceland, he hopes to inspire riders to think about the sport in new ways. While racing remains his first and greatest love on the bike, he hopes to have an impact that extends far beyond the finish line.

  • In this week's episode, we talk to gravel rider Hannah Shell

Becoming a dirt convert - getting into gravel racing post running injuryHow she fuels on race dayHow she fuels while trainingHow she spends her off-season

Simply put, Colorado-based Hannah Shell likes to do hard things. She finds life gets easier when she dedicates time and work to every corner of her life. Cycling, on the other hand, requires more than that. For Hannah, she credits the combination of strategy, luck and the art of riding to success. The faster you ride, the harder it gets. She doesn't consider herself a natural talent on the bike, so she commits to putting in hard work to compete, while loving the humble and hardworking attitude cycling requires. Because success doesn't come easily to anyone in this sport, she finds that she learns more about herself and life in general as she navigates the ups and downs of competitive racing.

  • In this week's episode, we talk to runner Rachael Norfleet about:

Her transition from swimming to triathlon world champs and eventually to trail running & ultramarathonsBattling an auto-immune disorder and REDs, and her path to healthHow she fuels now

Rachael Norfleet is a mom, a trail runner, and a sales professional. She grew up in the Midwest and swam competitively into college. After collegiate swimming, she found triathlon and raced at a high level for 5 years, competing three times in world championship races. She took an almost 2-year hiatus from sport in 2018 to heal after experiencing a thyroid storm that turned her life and health upside down. During this time, she moved to California for work and began hiking all around SoCal. She fell in love with the trails and as her health came around, she began running more than hiking. She carried this love for trail running through her pregnancy and began racing on the trails more seriously in 2022.

She now lives in Bozeman, Montana with her husband, who is a pilot, and her 2-year-old son, Callum. After working in the neurosurgical medical device industry for 6 years, she's going back to school in 2024 to pursue nursing. Now, they prioritize spending meaningful time together as a family and we spend as much of their days outside as they can skiing, hiking, running and hunting collectively as a family.
