  • Today I’m talking with Allison Askew of Arrow J Beef Co., a first-generation rancher with a lot of irons in a lot of fires. She’s sharing her inspiring story of unconventional homesteading to encourage everyone who doesn’t feel like they fit in any one particular box. If you ever feel like you’re wearing too many hats to actually be good at any one thing, take heart. If you're overwhelmed, or tied of feeling like you're not understood by those around you, Allison has some words of wisdom just for you.

  • Today I'm talking with Bob Osborne, columnist on CBC radio, a Canadian farmer with more than 40 years of experience with all things apples, and the author of a brand new book, Hardy Apples.

Bob and I chat about how to grow healthy apples (even in cold climates), talk about the Renaissance of apples, and discuss why there are thousands of different apples out there but only the standard five options available in the grocery store.

And we may wind up gushing a little over all things apple crisp and apple cider.

  • Join in as I chat with this husband and wife team, Chad & Tara Philipp, of She's Rooted Home, about how they managed to build a homestead in the Southern California Mohave desert. Surrounded by tumbleweeds, with Juniper berry bushes as the only occasional “greenery," they've built a thriving homestead.

They share with me how they overcame the numerous obstacles of life in such a dry, arid climate, explaining that success is really all about changing your perspective and living the life you want, right where you are.

  • Join me as I sit down with one of my very favorite persons, Michelle Visser. Michelle's family raises pigs on their New England farm. (In fact, reach out to Michelle if you're looking for a great source of pasture-raised pork in the New Hampshire area.)

Michelle is also a published author and my Marketing & Project Manager (pretty much one of my right hands on The Prairie Homestead team).

Michelle and I get a little starry-eyed and do a deep dive into two good animal fats today. We break down the kinds of fat you can source from cows and pigs, why this fat is so good for us, why it ever got such a bad rap, how to render it, how to use each kind of fat, and where to get it if you're not a pig or cattle farmer yourself.

  • Today we're diving deep into the unseen world of sourdough microbes. Karyn Newman, author of the new book Sourdough by Science, personifies the many parts of our sourdough starters and explains the chemistry happening in our kitchens to help us make perfect sourdough loaves. Every time.

Find out the best time to feed your starter, why the fridge is your starter's friend, and what character in your starter is the most important one (and how to care for it best).

Even learn how to convert any traditional bread recipe to a sourdough one!

I learned so much from this episode, even what I've been doing wrong when I try to use my fresh flour to make my sourdough bread and how to fix it. (I couldn't believe how simple this is!)

About the author: Karyn Newman began her professional life in editing, then embarked on a career in the sciences after earning her PhD in cellular and molecular biology. And she also happens to love baking. She loves using her science background to help non-science folks understand the important details of making a perfect loaf of sourdough bread.

  • Today we're talking about meat in a way we haven't before here on the podcast. My good friend, Justin Rhodes, is sitting down with me to talk about his version of what some people might call the carnivore diet, or the zero carb diet. Basically, we're talking about what it looks like to eat an exclusively animal-based diet.

We're debunking casseroles, joking about cabbage killers, talking about chickens as gardeners, and agreeing that neither of us are fans of tongue tacos.

  • In today’s episode, I’m thrilled to be chatting with a long-time friend, Lisa Bass, of Farmhouse on Boone.

Lisa talks about how she lived the farm life while living in town. And how she cooked like a homesteader before she even owned a farm.

And Lisa and I delve deep into a topic that has always been a thorn in my side. Lisa breaks down the secrets behind her meal planning, how she’s developed a system of routines that works well for her large family. We chat about our family’s staple meals. And Lisa shares numerous great tips, not to mention a few secret weapons too.

And be sure to hop over to Lisa’s podcast—Simple Farmhouse Life—for the rest of our conversation today.

  • We’re diving into a topic we’ve never discussed here before, and I think you’re going to love the insight Stacy Lyn Harris brings to this “meaty” episode.

We’re breaking down the numerous benefits to hunted meats, comparing grass-fed beef to wild meat, talking about how to hunt even if you don’t own land to hunt on, and even walking through exactly how to start if you’re new to hunting and how to prepare wild game versus domesticated meat.

Stacy Lyn Harris is a best-selling cookbook author. She is also a blogger, speaker, wife, and homeschooling mother of seven children, as well as host of The Sporting Chef TV Show on The Outdoor Channel.

  • A Skeptic's Guide to Eating Offal

I have to confess. There I was, a homesteader who has been raising and butchering our meat for well over a decade, but I didn’t even know the proper way to pronounce “offal,” not alone how to process organ meats to make nutritional meals out of them.

And I didn’t know if I wanted to know.

Today I'm talking about the liver and the heart and lots of other good stuff with the author of It Takes Guts and Carnivore-ish and the host of Muscle Maven Radio. Trust me, you’ll see offal in a whole new way (and know how to pronounce it).
