If you’ve ever felt lost in translation with your teens, this episode’s for you! We broke down the often confusing world of teen slang and what your kids actually mean. We also chatted about kids chores (or the fact that they aren't doing any) compared to when we were growing up. Anyone else remember raking leaves so that not one single leaf one was left behind? Let’s just say things are looking a little different these days. If you have a parenting conundrum send it to [email protected]!

Why do we hold our kids to a higher standard than we hold ourselves when it comes to how we conduct ourselves online? Everywhere you look, there are people dropping negative comments. What if social media just turned off comments for a year—or even just two months? Would we all feel a bit better? Let’s be honest, it’s hard to feel good about yourself after leaving a negative comment. So what’s the real motivation? Are we looking for engagement, a debate, or just reacting to something we don’t agree with?

How are devices impacting the mental health of our youth? Dr. Alison Yeung, a Family Physician from Ontario, Canada, has noticed a growing number of teen mental health-related visits over the past decade. With kids spending increasing amounts of time on devices, especially on social media, YouTube, and video games, she began research on the topic. What she found raised serious concerns about how these platforms are affecting young minds. Now, Dr. Yeung is dedicated to educating parents, encouraging them to delay their children's exposure to social media, and reducing the harmful effects of handheld device use. For more on how you can cut through the noise surrounding screens and social media follow @thesmartphoneeffectmd.

They can often be used in sinister ways. Sarah's open conversation has really opened our eyes and this is a must listen for every parent out there.

While the contents of this interview are heavy and serious, Nicole Bedera has a way of making the topic feel approachable, rather than scary and overwhelming. Nicole is studying how sexual violence is much bigger than the people involved in a sexual assault - that it’s societal. By identifying how violence starts, she can find ways to make our society safer. Nicole Bedera, Ph.D. is a sociologist and author of the forthcoming book On the Wrong Side: How Universities Protect Perpetrators and Betray Survivors of Sexual Violence. Her research broadly focuses on how our social structures contribute to survivors’ trauma and make sexual violence more likely to occur in the future. Her scholarship has influenced sexual violence prevention programming across the country. Nicole Bedera will be launching her debut book, On the Wrong Side: How Universities Protect Perpetrators and Betray Survivors of Sexual Violence on October 8th, 2024! Pre-order her book here and for more on Nicole visit https://www.nicolebedera.com/ or check out NBedera on Twitter.

This week, we’re diving into a somewhat controversial topic - do you let your underage teenager and their friends drink at your house because they’re “safe” under your roof? It’s one of those tricky parenting decisions where some parents feel like they’re being responsible by allowing it, while others are like, absolutely not! We’re weighing in on our feelings and sharing why some parents might go down that road.

As our society grapples with many implications of our online lives, especially as it relates to children, anti-trafficking expert Laila Mickelwait is working to remove child sexual assault from streaming services. As our teens get older we face the reality that our voice is no longer the presence it once was and it is now one of many voices in their lives. Influences are everywhere. Their friends matter, like REALLY matter. Friends become everything, whether it be good or bad. Are we watching from afar or are we able to step in and voice our concerns? We brought in Marybeth Bock, Master of Public Health (MPH), to explain why parents should come from a place of being inquisitive rather than judgmental when it comes to who their child is spending their time with. Marybeth writes for numerous websites such as Raising Teens Today, Grown and Flown and Collegiate Parent. For more on Marybeth check out @mbbock.

Our kids are growing up in a digital world whether we like it or not. They're trying to figure out who they are in a hyper-connected environment where everyone is watching. It's more important than ever for parents to understand the technology their kids are using, the content they could potentially be exposed to, and how to guide them to become responsible digital citizens. Dr. Devorah Heitner is the author of Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World and Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic. She has a Ph.D. in Media/Technology & Society from Northwestern University and has taught at DePaul and Northwestern. On social media, in the news, and even from the government, children are receiving the message that being selfish, obnoxious, and cruel is okay. Research tells us that hate crimes among children and teens are on the rise while compassion and empathy are dropping. How are we as parents supposed to raise kind and compassionate kids when they're constantly exposed to imagery, negativity, and division that influences how they view the world? Melinda Wenner Moyer is a science and parenting journalist and author. She is a contributing editor at Scientific American magazine and a regular contributor and former columnist at The New York Times. Her first book, How To Raise Kids Who Aren’t Assholes, was published in July 2021 and won a gold medal in the 2022 Living Now Book Awards. Are you concerned that the boy(s) in your life might be holding back and not expressing the full range of human emotions because they might be limited to expressing themselves with traditional "masculine" emotions like anger, aggression, and boldness?
We wanted to bring in a guest expert who could speak to how we can raise boys to feel comfortable opening up about their mental health, about their emotions, and not feel so driven to perform to be loved as many males often do.
Sought after for his expertise in teaching men and boys to live from their hearts, speaker, influencer, author, proud and dedicated husband and father Jason Wilson has appeared on many of the top shows across all media platforms.
Jason Wilson's purpose is to teach, train and transform boys into men who are physically conscious, mentally astute and spiritually strong enough to navigate through the pressures of this world without succumbing to their negative emotions.

Experts Cara Natterson, MD pediatrician and New York Times bestselling author and Vanessa Kroll Bennett, puberty educator and writer sat down with us to share their valuable insight! Together they host The Puberty Podcast, run Order of Magnitude, the leading brand dedicated to flipping puberty positive and they wrote "This Is So Awkward: Modern Puberty Explained".
