Episodes

  • Cate Solari is an artist and educator currently based in Eastern Connecticut. Her sculptural work uses organic ceramic forms paired with play equipment like kiddie pools and swing set slides. The pairs are inspired by Solari’s research interests: art and play, childhood development, pedagogy, and team building. Her social practice work is a culmination of these interests into interactive play experiences she terms, Collaborative Play.

Solari holds a MFA from the School of the Art institute of Chicago (SAIC) in Sculpture, and a BFA from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Sculpture and Ceramics. She has exhibited widely in venues that include: Sullivan Center in Chicago, Comfort Station in Chicago, Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, and the Barnes and Franklin Gallery in Farmington. She has received numerous grants and awards, most recently the Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year Award from UConn, where she teaches ceramics classes. Solari also teaches ceramics classes at Westfield State University and is the current artist in residence at the Eastern Connecticut Center for History Art and Performance in Willington.

In our conversation, we talk about ceramics, art education, and collaborative play in art, between the artist and their medium, between art and its audience, and within a community or studio.

Cate's work is on exhibition from October 1st - 21st, 2022 in the “The Will to Change: Gathering as Praxis” Gallery Exhibit at the Cummings Art Gallery of Connecticut College, organized by Nasty Women Connecticut (https://www.nastywomenct.org/nw2022-1).

  • Welcome to another episode of People Who Make Sh*t!

My guest this week is Kaitlyn Cawthorn, a professional photographer.

    From Kaitlyn:

“As a Western Massachusetts native I found myself growing up around the most beautiful scenes. I first picked up a camera as a toddler, which I never put down: now, I’m 10+ years into professionally photographing. I currently reside in Coastal North Carolina, which is very different, but beautiful in its own unique way.

“My photography lets me build relationships with others; many clients have become close friends. Regardless of where I am in my photography path or geographically, I let my instincts and nature guide me through my creativity journey. I consider myself an all-around creative person, often picking up other mediums to refresh my creativity. Some I stick with, others I let go of, and I always learn a lesson in creativity.

“My path is ever evolving. I started with portraiture photography and am now primarily doing real estate photography. I enjoy each chapter, learning what lessons it can teach me and what it can add to my creativity. One major principle that has been consistent for my entire photography journey is using my skills to give to my community. Whether it’s in the form of giving away a session as a thank-you, donating my profits from photo print sales to an organization, or more recently using my photography to help cats in need, it has been important to me to do good in my community with my skills. I recently started volunteering at a cat rescue which relies on state funding and donations to operate. I’m grateful to lend my photography expertise to capture the hearts of the cats in their care with the goal to get them adopted.

“Some of my photography accomplishments include; work featured in a photo exhibit in Grand Central Station, multiple photos shared by DownEast magazine on their online platform, placed first in a number of photo contests in New England, and most recently placed second in a North Carolina specific photo contest with a magazine cover feature coming up from that contest!”

  • Welcome to another episode of People Who Make Sh*t!

This week's guest is Lacey Raymond, a wonderful facilitator and teacher of meditation, and Founder of Mind-Body Integration.

    From Lacey:

"During my collegiate experience studying psychology an I assisted on clinical research that focused on language development in individuals with autism. Also working in ABA, these clinical and research experiences exposed me to the past, present, and future directions of Westernized behavioral healthcare. Meanwhile, I balanced my academic endeavors with my interest in metaphysics and Eastern philosophy. The legacy of Reverend Barbara Szafranski of Salem, MA, I sought her expertise to develop my innate ability for mediumship, channeling, meditation and Reiki healing. It was here that I began to believe in the healing power of practices like meditation.

Upon graduating and beginning my career in clinical neuropsychology as a psychometrician, I began to envision a bridge between Eastern and Western approaches to health.

This is where MBI was born.

Our goal is to provide accessible and affordable preventative health education, resources, and services to help individuals optimize their life potential. MBI holds truth in that if the individual is healed, the community at large begins to heal also. Blending evidence-based techniques with Eastern philosophies, MBI delivers preventative and integrative approaches to health and wellness."

    I loved this episode!

  • This week’s episode features Initiatress Mary Blades, Inner Compass Architect.

Mary's core ideology is rooted in animism and hermeticism: spirit, magic, mysticism, interconnectedness, & alchemy

Her work highlights the essential nature of the principal "as within, so without" to initiate regenerative relationship practices for balance on an individual and planetary basis

She achieves this through calibration to her surroundings: tuning into cyclical wisdom, noticing patterns, and building creative confidence, in order to fine-tune intuitive reliance and to cultivate trust of inner guidance.

In this podcast episode, she recalls her personal journey of creative transformation: from misaligned identification with a past experience to sovereign control and recognition of her power, through rooting into a deeper foundation of creative confidence.
