  • In a 2001 interview, Rolling Stone asked lead singer Serj Tankian if he was “happy with how [this] album turned out”, and he answered “I’m just happy”. We believe him, and we also believe that this is one of the most intense, angry-sounding alternative metal records ever created! Upon release, Toxicity was critically and commercially successful, and has been certified triple platinum.

  • Talking Heads’ fourth album is a wild ride, and we’re here for it. Combining electronics, funk, African polyrhythms, looped grooves, and stream-of-consciousness lyrics, “Remain in Light” has been called the band’s magnum opus. It was the last album to be produced by old sourpuss himself, Brian Eno.

  • When Seattle-based band Mother Love Bone ceased to exist in 1990, the remaining members went on to form Pearl Jam. Their debut album “Ten”, released in 1991, has since gone 13x platinum and remains a quintessential grunge/alternative/hard rock album. Do we know what Eddie Vedder is singing? Not quite. Are we singing along to every syllable? Absolutely.

  • Frank Ocean’s 2nd studio album, “Blonde”, was declared #1 on Time Magazine’s list of the top 10 albums of 2016, ranks at #79 on the Rolling Stone top 500, and has been called he best album of the 2010s by Pitchfork. Originally called “Boys Don’t Cry” and slated for a 2015 release, we can wholeheartedly say it was worth the delays in production! It features a slew of producers and guest artists and is certified Platinum in the US.

  • Was anyone really “ok” in the 90s? We’re featuring a few records from that decade this season, and Mezzanine by Massive Attack is further proof that the answer to that question is a resounding “nope!” Their most successful album to date, it released in 1998 topping European charts, and in 2020 was moved from position 412 to 383 on the Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of all time.

  • Is it okay for a band or a song to become “meme-ified”? In the case of R.E.M., we definitely think so! The 8th studio album from the Athens, Georgia-based group is full of empathetic lyrics about mortality loss, nostalgia, and mourning, that all can relate to.

  • “Heaven or Las Vegas” is the 6th album by Scottish dream pop band Cocteau Twins, and their most critically acclaimed. Like the city itself, this release has an otherworldly yet grounded element despite quite a few incomprehensible and misheard lyrics.
