  • “I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something I loved from my childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us: LOST.” And I was wrong. This week, Jake strands the co-hosts and listeners on a small, dangerous island, and dissects the ‘LOST’ alternate reality game from 2006. In an effort to steer the show away from politics and conspiracy theories in these trying times, Jake has inadvertently uncovered the inconvenient truth that TV shows and their advertisers may have primed us for Qanon.

  • The election has come and gone. Liv, Jake, Travis and Julian talk about conspiracism among online Republicans and Democrats in the wake of Trump’s victory. We also talk a bit about Kash Patel, who guested on QAnon podcasts before becoming the future Director of the FBI. Plus Jake brings us a sequel to his story: Letter from the Meme War.

  • You’ve heard more than your fill about terrible news in America. So you should take a break by hearing some terrible news from a nation more experienced in empire death.

UK Correspondent Annie Kelly returns from maternity leave to explain the most significant recent outbreaks of British brainworms.

First we meet the online community of obsessive “Royal Watchers,” which spawned conspiracy theories to explain the mysterious but brief absence of Princess Kate Middleton from public life. Then to reaffirm our commitment to brutal tonal shifts, Annie tells of Twitter-amplified misinformation about a teenage triple murder suspect which helped to fuel race riots. It’s an awful tale, but also usefully illustrative of how Elon Musk likes to moderate his social media platform.

  • To celebrate 300 regular episodes we have brought on a special guest: Julian Feeld.

And what a beefy episode number 300 is.

First we cover Trump’s lively Madison Square Garden rally and a conspiracy theory that sprang up in the wake of stand up comedian Kill Tony’s appearance there. Plus, the return of the “Panda Eyes” conspiracy theory at a Trump event. If you don’t know what “Panda Eyes" are, then just assume the worst before listening to the episode.

Then we dive into the bizarre claims among some liberal posters who believe the first Trump assassination attempt was “staged.” There’s a new twist, with new lore, and the plot has thickened. Get ready for quality ear analysis.

Finally we go through the ways the US election is being besieged by efforts to skew the vote and apply some well honed election denial tactics, including an app by an organization you might remember from the last cycle: True The Vote.

It’s a window into alternate realities and a preview of the kind of paranoid delusions that will become popular as America struggles through the first presidential post-election cycle since January 6th.

  • Someone invented internet money, and we want to find out who they are. We’re not mad, we just want to talk.

For a decade and a half, the true identity of “Satoshi Nakamoto,” the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper, has been a closely guarded secret. Several major publications have tried to uncover crypto’s founding father, including New Yorker, Vice, Newsweek, New York Times, and Wired. But definitive answers are elusive, despite the fact that Satoshi possibly controls over a million bitcoin worth tens of billions of dollars.

In the HBO Documentary “Money Electric: A Bitcoin Mystery” director Cullen Hoback makes an original case that the person behind Satoshi isn’t any of the usual suspects. Hoback, who also directed the docuseries “Q: Into the Storm,” believes that Satoshi is the Canadian Bitcoin core developer Peter Todd, who was 23 years old at the time of the whitepaper’s publication. Peter Todd, in the film itself and after the film’s release, denies that he is Satoshi.

We chat with Cullen about what inspired him to take on this project, why it even matters who Satoshi is, the evidence that convinced Cullen that he’s “very close to the answer,” and the internet mysteries he plans to tackle in future documentaries.

  • Despite Travis’ best efforts, it’s still possible to occasionally read posts on the internet that are not perfectly accurate. In fact, Travis’ failure to turn networking technology into primarily a means of rationally exchanging ideas and substantive policy issues has forced media outlets all over the globe to employ so-called “fact checkers.”

To get a better handle on this phenomenon (for which, to reiterate, podcast host Travis View bears most of the blame) we spoke to the hardest working man in online fact checking: BBC Verify Senior Journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh. For years, he has tracked and reported on viral falsehoods, both silly and deadly, in many countries.

We discuss how Shayan got into this unique discipline of journalism, his response to the criticism that “fact checking” primarily serves the reinforcement of establishment narratives, research which suggests fact checkers are less trusted than other kinds of reporters, the rise of deep fakes, atrocity denial, and how to maintain trust as a fact checker.

  • Today’s show is a piñata, and each time a blindfolded Travis takes a swing at it, a new and weirder piece of candy falls to the ground for Jake and Liv to nibble on. First, we’ll be talking about how even conspiracy theorists had to push back against a terribly lazy hoax about VP candidate Tim Walz. Then we’ll be talking to reporter Robyn Pennacchia about her deep dive into a majorly pilled telegram community whose leader disperses intel drops she claims come from both the military and celestial angels. And as a special desert, we’re sitting down with reporter Ken Klippenstein to discuss his recent defeat & subsequent victory against Elon, after Ken linked to his reporting about the JD Vance dossier.

But it’s not our ever-increasing carbon footprint, no, it’s actually just a very specific group of people who have unlocked the technology to CONTROL the weather – and direct it at their political enemies. • On September 9th, United States prosecutors announced the indictment and arrest of two leaders of the so-called “Terrogram Collective.” This is an online community of accelerationist neo-nazis which the DOJ called “a transnational terrorist group.” The indictment charges Dallas Humber, 34, of Elk Grove, California, and Matthew Allison, 37, of Boise, Idaho with 15 crimes. They include soliciting hate crimes, soliciting the murder of federal officials, and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. If convicted of all charges, Humber and Allison each face a maximum penalty of 220 years in prison.

This group has produced propaganda that encourages their fellow white supremacists to venerate murderers and violently attack Black, immigrant, LGBT, and Jewish people. The screeds have directly inspired a series of ideologically motivated attacks around the world. These include a 2022 mass shooting at a gay bar in Slovakia; successful attacks on power infrastructure in North Carolina; and a stabbing spree in Turkey.

To help better understand Terrorgram, the arrests, and the history of Dallas Humber we spoke to Abner Hauge and Michael Boorman from Left Coast Right Watch, the publication that first identified Humber as a driving force behind Terrorgram in March of last year.

  • A false smear about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio killing pets made its way from a fourth-hand Facebook rumor to Donald Trump’s lips during his televised debate with Kamala Harris. Despite the fact that there is no evidence for this claim and local authorities have explicitly denied that it’s true, Republicans have enthusiastically promoted the libel in order to demonize Haitians who are legally living and working in the town. This promotion includes AI generated images of anthropomorphic cats in tactical gear.

We discuss how this false claim spread, the background of recent anti-immigrant sentiment in JD Vance’s home state, a historical example of how American anti-immigrant conspiracy theories inspired deadly violence, and how the current smears are leading to innocent people being threatened right now.

  • This is the story of an April Fool’s Day joke that got wildly out of control.

In 1991, a columnist for InfoWorld claimed that he learned of a hyper-advanced computer virus called “AF/91” that disabled Iraqi air defense systems during the first Gulf War. This virus had allegedly escaped Iraq and threatened every computer that used a windows-based graphical interface. The last line of the column revealed the truth: the story of the AF/91 virus was a fun bit of fiction for April 1st.

But shortly afterwards, a journalist for U.S. News & World Report reported on a virus that sounded suspiciously similar to AF/91, based on confirmation from two government officials. Though the report was clearly based on the joke virus from InfoWorld, the publication refused to retract. So for more than a decade the story was repeated as if it were true in newspapers, magazines, and even in a report by a major think tank.

The boys walk through the evolution of the strange tale of this virus hoax and speculate about why it spread so widely for so long.

More specifically, Greg Locke made a movie about how he graduated from QAnon promoter and COVID conspiracy theorist to self-aggrandizing general in the battle between God and Satan. • Demonic exorcism isn’t just a solid premise for horror films. It’s also the hook for an increasingly popular group of pentecostal pastors who leverage social media, spiritual warfare, and outrage to spread their message.

Tennessee pastor Greg Locke is the most prominent member of a supergroup of evangelical ghostbusters who call themselves the “Demon Slayers.” Together, they cross promote videos of supposed exorcisms (which they call “deliverance”), host live events that attract thousands of believers hoping to rid themselves of infernal forces, and even produce feature-length films.

Reporter Sam Kestenbaum embedded himself in Greg Locke’s operation, Locke Media, to see this algorithm-fuelled demon slaying first hand. He wrote about his experience in a longform piece for Harper’s Magazine and told us about personally witnessing a massive congregation shriek and convulse during a tent revival group exorcism.
