EPISODE 216 DETAILSPrevent Scours This Upcoming Calving Season Plus Cattle Industry NewsHow To Prevent Calf Scours: Feed FarmatanFeed Farmatan To Prevent Scours This Calving Season

Calving season is getting ready to start for many producers and for some others it is still a ways away yet. Regardless, we need to get a jump on scours and make sure each and every calf that hits the ground has the best chance of survival. A simple solution… FARMATAN from Imogene Ingredients.

WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES

    Clostridia-Enterotoxemia

The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal’s intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf’s life, and can result in sudden death.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly Dehydrated Bloat Blindness

Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold.

    Coccidiosis

Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf’s life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody Depression Weight Loss

Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. Treatment can have a good impact on reducing secondary disease, and speeding up recovery time. Farmatan has been shown to disrupt the reproductive cycle of Coccidia; and may help strengthen the intestinal wall to prevent infection, in both the cow and calf.

    Coronavirus

Bovine Coronavirus is a ubiquitous, envelope-viral disease, causing respiratory and enteric infection. There are many serotypes for this virus, making it difficult to test for, and create a vaccine. Coronavirus can present as either diarrhea and/or respiratory illness; transmitted through nasal discharge and/or feces. Animal reservoirs continue to spread the disease, and make eradication almost impossible. Clinical disease will likely occur between days 10-14, and present for up to 4 days.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Watery Nasal Discharge Coughing

Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is difficult due to wild animals transmitting the disease. Keeping wild animals out of animal enclosures is essential. Isolation of infected animals is critical to preventing the spread of Coronavirus. Adequate colostrum intake, along with a good vaccination program will help prevent clinical disease. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmtan’s active ingredient on Coronavirus HERE.

    Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium Parvum is a single-celled parasite responsible for causing infection in young calves. The infection takes place within the first four weeks of a calves’ life, afterwards immunity has developed within the calf. The parasite is either passed from the cow or spread through infected water sources.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody, Mucus present Colic Depression

Prevention/Treatment: Good sanitary conditions, especially clean water is essential in preventing transmission of cryptosporidium. Isolation of sick calves will help reduce the effect on the overall herd. There is some good effect of calves given adequate colostrum, however this is likely helping by reducing other pathogenic loads rather than a direct effect on Cryptosporidium, itself. Farmatan fed prior to calving has been shown to disrupt the life-cycle and reduce transmission from the cow. The direct action of Farmatan on the parasite makes it an excellent choice for treating calves. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE.

    E Coli

Escherichia Coli is a bacterial infection that affects calves within the first week of their life. The bacteria colonize in the lower intestine and produce a toxin. The toxin causes excessive secretion of fluids. The zoonotic disease has special importance in food safety and human health. Colostrum and natural immunity are often not sufficient in preventing infection in cases of high bacterial concentrations.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Creamy, Yellow Abdominal Pains Fever Vomiting

Prevention/Treatment: The best prevention methods for E. Coli include: clean water, dry bedding/environment, isolation of infected animals, and vaccination. Treatment with antibiotics and oral fluids have great benefits in reducing clinical symptoms of the disease. Farmatan has been shown to reduce bacterial load and help prevent infection. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE.

    Rotavirus

Rotavirus in calves is caused by a virus belonging to the Reoviridae family, as a non-envelope RNA virus. Rotavirus is thought to be the most common cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves. The virus tends to affect calves between the age of 1-day-old up to a month, with most cases presenting within the first week of life. Shedding and reinfection can happen in older calves and cows. Clinical symptoms are rarely present after the first month of life; older animals tend to either be carriers or asymptomatic. The majority of herds have some level present, with transmission likely happening during or shortly after birth.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Pale Yellow, Bloody Dehydrated Dull calves Reluctant to drink

Prevention/Treatment: The ideal scenario is to prevent infection through, sanitary facilities (calving barn), outdoor calf housing, and a good vaccination program. Colostrum will provide much needed antibodies, protecting the calf before their immune system is fully developed to combat the disease. Farmatan fed prior to calving can help reduce the pathogen load of the cow, reducing the likelihood of transmission. Farmatan supplemented in the milk has been shown to decrease the virus’ ability to cause infection and clinical disease. The best treatment for calves already presenting clinical disease is to administer oral fluids/electrolytes to rehydrate the calf. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE.

    Salmonella

Salmonella infection of cattle is caused by a variety of species within the family. While the disease is uncommon in cattle with little effect on calf health, it has massive implications for human health and food safety. The bacteria spreads through direct contact or contaminated feed & water. This disease is highly regulated by the USDA. The most severe cases of salmonella affect calves between the ages of 7-10 days old.

    Clinical Signs

Diarrhea - Bloody (flakes of slough tissue), Watery, Mucus present Lethargic Fever

Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is always the best option: provide clean water, feed, and bedding. Isolate infected animals, ensure adequate colostrum intake, and develop a vaccination program with your veterinarian. Treatment with antibiotics and fluids (oral or intravenous) greatly increases the survival rate of calves infected with Salmonella. Farmatan has been shown to help reduce the likelihood of infection by protecting the gut, and reduce recovery time of infected animals.

Cattle Industry NewsUSDA Gives Bleak Timeline For Mexico Cattle Restrictions

According to MeatingPlace.Com, the USDA has confirmed there will be no holiday gifts for Mexican cattle producers this year.

Earlier this month, APHIS restricted all Mexican animal commodity imports following the detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in a cow in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Mexico’s chief veterinary officer alerted USDA in late November.

Dr. Rosemary Sifford, the agency’s chief veterinary officers, stated to media that APHIS’s restrictions will “likely” remain in place through the holidays, with “full resumption of live animal movements” after incremental changes in early 2025. She went on to say that while the U.S. continues to work very closely with Mexico and has agreed to protocols, it will take some time to implement these due to multiple steps needed to resume trade.

Additionally, USDA announced $165 million in emergency funding to protect U.S. livestock from NWS, which are fly larvae that infest living tissue and cause infection.

Canada Plans For U.S. Trade War

Canada’s federal and state governments are planning measures in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with provincial leaders to discuss retaliatory actions.

Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said after the meeting that "a number of premiers spoke out strongly in favour of a robust Canadian response to unjustified tariffs."

In a social media post last month, Trump accused Canada and Mexico of allowing drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States and vowed to slap a 25% tariff on imports from both neighbors immediately on taking office on Jan. 20. Such an act would contradict the 2020 US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a modest update of the preceding North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Trump signed during his previous term in the White House.

Low U.S. Beef Inventory Argues Against Tariffs

A former Canadian Cattle Association president Dave Solverson has urged farmers north of the border to utilize their relationships with fellow beef producers to try to counter US President-elect Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs.

Solverson said with herds in both countries at their smallest in many decades, extending possible 25% tariffs on Canadian imports makes little sense in the beef business. He said sales of Canadian stock to U.S. packers and feedlot operators are an important source to fill in increasing production gaps especially in northern states, according to Solverson, who led the Canadian Cattle Association from 2014-16.

Solverson recalled that the community of North American beef producers forged alliances a decade ago to oppose mandatory country-of-origin labelling. Those coalitions with both state and national producer groups “really proved beneficial for both sides,” he said. Canadian farmers were able to convince their U.S. counterparts “about how important it was that they could top up their pens with a good group of Canadian cattle.”

Questions About USDA’s Electronic EID Requirements Answered

There are still lots of questions about USDA’s Electronic EID requirements and if you are confused don’t worry you are not alone. Merck Animal Health has fielded many questions about the new electronic (EID) rules for livestock moving across state lines. As a leading provider of EID tags and readers through their AllFlex Brand, Merck Animal Health is helping support cattle producers in their decision-making with expertise and solutions. As part of that effort, Merck Animal Health has provided some clarity to the tagging system. We have all of those links and easy to follow information HERE.

EPISODE 60 DETAILSDollars Allocated To Help Producers With New World ScrewwormNew World Screwworm & How Dollars Are Protecting Livestock Owners

USDA’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced $165 million in emergency funding to protect livestock and other animals from New World screwworm (NWS) and boost the agency’s efforts to control its spread in Mexico and Central America.

The move comes after APHIS restricted the import of animal commodities from Mexico due to detection of NWS in a cow in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. It was a step northward for NWS, which over the last two years has spread throughout Panama and into Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala.

APHIS is working with partners in Mexico and Central America to stop the spread of NWS into the United States and asking all producers along the southern border to watch their livestock and pets for signs of NWS and to immediately report potential cases to their local veterinarian, State Veterinarian’s Office, or APHIS Veterinary Services.

The fly larvae can infest warm blooded animals such as cattle, causing wounds that can lead to infection. A biological barrier can be created by mating sterilized male screwworm flies with females in areas where NWS is detected. This initiative can decrease or even eliminate populations of screwworm flies.

Cattle Industry NewsNCBA Endorsed Disaster Tax Relief Bill, Passes Senate

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the U.S. Senate for passing the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. In addition to providing much needed relief to victims of hurricanes, this legislation would provide tax relief for cattle producers who received payments due to wildfires. Previously, these payments counted as taxable income, meaning producers who already suffered from disasters were hurt again by having their relief payments taxed.

The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act addresses limitations in casualty losses and allows producers to take greater deductions for disaster related losses. Additionally, the bill excludes any payments received due to a “qualified wildfire disaster” from being counted as income for federal tax purposes. The bill also retroactively applies to any wildfire payments received in tax years 2020 through 2025. Producers will have the opportunity to file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for relief payments received in these previous years. The complete bill can be reviewed HERE.

Cattlemen Relieved By Court Decision To Halt Corporate Transparency Act

Many producers hailed the issuance of a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the Corporate Transparency Act from being enforced on January 1, 2025. This ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas protects millions of family farmers and ranchers from onerous reporting requirements imposed by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

We’ve talked about The Corporate Transparency Act in great detail a few episodes back and remember that every producers’ situation is different, and this information should not be construed as professional advice. Always consult your attorney and/or tax professional to determine how the Corporate Transparency Act impacts you. You can go back and listen to episode 213 for additional information.

EPISODE 59 DETAILSBovine Tuberculosis Discovered In South Dakota & USDA Dietary GuidelinesTuberculosis Found In South Dakota Cattle Herd

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) has been confirmed in South Dakota for the first time since 2021. According to State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson, the infected steer was initially identified in late October by meat inspectors during routine inspection at a Wisconsin packing plant. Records linked the steer to a Hamlin County feedlot which had marketed the animal.

The State Veterinarian’s office is working closely with the feedlot owner as well as other producers who may have sold animals purchased by the feedlot, USDA officials, and area veterinarians to locate the steer’s source herd. Necessary precautions are being taken to protect the health of South Dakota’s cattle industry. Bovine TB is not currently a threat to food safety in the United States, thanks to milk pasteurization and comprehensive meat inspection programs. Bovine tuberculosis is a chronic, slowly progressive respiratory disease of cattle. Infected animals may transmit infection to other animals when in close proximity for prolonged periods. Cattle rarely exhibit visible signs of illness. The US has nearly eliminated bovine TB due to a cooperative eradication campaign and South Dakota has officially been recognized as free of the disease since 1982.

Criticisms To The New Scientific Report On USDA Dietary Guidelines

The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is providing access to a new Scientific Report that will assist two government agencies to develop the final Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030, which is expected to be published late next year.

Several cattle organizations including The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) quickly responded to the report’s recommendation that nutrition guidelines incorporate reduced consumption of red meat. NCBA President Mark Eisele said in a statement that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee ignored robust and rigorous scientific evidence about beef’s essential nutrients and the foundational, positive role it plays in health as a preferred protein food in a variety of healthy diets for all Americans.

The committee is offering the Scientific Report online and offers its “independent, evidence-based findings and advice” for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the USDA. The report, along with public comments and federal agency input, will inform the departments as they prepare the final document for publication. The Committee says it is focused on health equity to ensure that factors like socioeconomic position, race, ethnicity and culture are considered to the greatest extent possible when it comes to establishing the most effective report for all Americans.

HHS and USDA plan to launch a 60-day public comment period and are encouraging the public to provide written comments on the committee’s Scientific Report, the agencies said in the announcement referencing the online document, which is available HERE.

EPISODE 214 DETAILSCattle Industry Top News Headlines, Christmas Gift Ideas, Market OutlooksTop Cattle Industry HeadlinesU.S. Tightens Import Restrictions After Screwworm Detection

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has restricted animal imports from Mexico after detecting New World screwworm (NWS) in a cow in Chiapas, Mexico. NWS larvae infest living tissue in warm-blooded animals, causing severe infections.

Producers along the U.S.-Mexico border should monitor livestock and pets for signs such as draining wounds or discomfort and report any suspected cases to a veterinarian immediately.

To combat the pest's spread, APHIS is deploying sterile flies and intensifying efforts in Central America. "With this detection, we will intensify measures to protect American agriculture," said Dr. Rosemary Sifford, U.S. Chief Veterinary Officer.

NWS has recently spread northward due to increased cattle movement, disrupting biological barriers in the region. The USDA continues collaborating with Central American partners to contain and eradicate this threat.

Mexico Threatens Trade war If Trump Implements Tariffs

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized President-elect Donald Trump's proposed 25% tariff on Mexican imports, warning it could spark inflation, harm cross-border businesses, and lead to a trade war. Trump announced the tariffs as part of his immigration and drug enforcement policies, citing record illegal crossings.

Sheinbaum, in office for just seven weeks, highlighted the risks in a letter to Trump, emphasizing the potential impact on industries like automotive and U.S. meat exports. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), duty-free trade with Mexico has been crucial for export growth, with U.S. beef exports up 13% and pork exports up 7% year-over-year through September.

Sheinbaum urged a meeting with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address trade and migration concerns. Meanwhile, Trump defended the tariffs, linking them to stricter immigration and drug policies.

New Tariffs May Provide Financial Boost for U.S. Food Producers

The Trump administration’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from North American neighbors and China could yield unexpected benefits for U.S. food producers, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Ken Goldman.

While tariffs are expected to raise inflation and food prices, retaliatory measures could reduce global demand for U.S. crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. This decline may lower domestic crop prices, offering cost savings to U.S. producers and potentially boosting profit margins.

Goldman noted that U.S. manufacturers, less reliant on imported crops, could see these savings offset the negative impacts of tariffs on other goods.

Tyson To Close Beef/Pork Facility In Kansas

Tyson Foods announced the closure of its beef and pork non-harvest processing facility in Emporia, Kansas, impacting 809 employees. The plant is set to shut down by February 14, as part of Tyson’s strategy to consolidate operations and boost efficiency.

Operations will shift to Tyson’s Holcomb plant near Garden City, according to company officials. Tyson stated it is working with state and local agencies to support affected employees.

Despite the closure, Tyson continues to employ over 5,000 team members at its other Kansas facilities.

Top Headlines: Trump For Agriculture, Register Your Business Deadline & Cattle Industry NewsWhy Trump Supports AgricultureAgriculture: President Trump Views Importance

What could the new Trump Administration do for agriculture? Justin Tupper, President of the U.S. Cattlemen's Association and owner/manager of St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota shares his thoughts.

Why Your Business Must File With GovernmentDeadline: Farmers & Ranchers Must File BOI Report Avoid Fines & Jail Time

Attention farmers, ranchers, agricultural and/or small businesses: A critical deadline is approaching. By January 1, 2025, thousands of farms must file Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) with the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) or face severe consequences, including hefty fines and possible jail time.

    Who Needs to File?

Under the Corporate Transparency Act of 2021, businesses must register any “beneficial owner” to help combat money laundering. This law applies to farms structured as:

    C-corporationsS-corporationsLimited Liability Companies (LLCs)

Specifically, farms with fewer than 20 employees or generating less than $5 million in cash receipts must comply. This requirement impacts the majority of farms, with one report estimating over 230,000 farms are affected. However, government data reveals less than 11% of eligible businesses have filed so far.

    The Consequences of Non-Compliance

Failing to file BOI or neglecting to update records can lead to:

Criminal fines up to $10,000Civil penalties of up to $591 per dayPotential felony charges with prison sentences of up to two years

The financial and legal risks make it essential for farmers to act promptly.

    What Should Farmers Do?

Farmers uncertain about their filing obligations should immediately consult with a qualified accountant or attorney. These professionals can assess your business structure and ensure compliance with BOI requirements.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

The clock is ticking. Protect your farm, avoid penalties, and stay compliant. Take action now to file your BOI by the January 1, 2025, deadline.

Top Cattle Industry NewsBrooke Rollins Tapped To Lead USDA Under President-Elect Trump

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Brooke Rollins, former White House domestic policy adviser and current CEO of the America First Policy Institute, to lead the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Rollins, a Texas native with strong ties to agriculture and conservative advocacy, previously led the Texas Public Policy Foundation, championing causes like school choice and fossil fuels. If confirmed, she will become the second woman to head the USDA, following Ann Veneman under President George W. Bush.

With a $200 billion budget and nearly 100,000 employees, the USDA oversees programs like SNAP, WIC, and school meals. Rollins may also tackle the reauthorization of the massive farm bill, which funds farmer safety nets, rural development, and nutrition programs.

Her leadership could drive Trump’s agenda to streamline federal bureaucracy, enforce tariffs, and shape U.S. agricultural policy amid challenges like trade disputes and global competition.

October Proves A Monster Month For Retail Meat Sales

The average price per pound in the meat department across all cuts and kinds, both fixed and random weight, stood at $4.67 in October 2024, up 1.9% year-on-year. Processed meat prices rose the least in October, at a mere +0.1%.

October brought a mix of price movements. Beef and hot dogs increased further, but it was fresh exotic (which includes bison) that had the highest price increase in October, at +6.8% over last year’s October. Several proteins experienced price decreases, including lamb, bacon and processed chicken.

Meat department sales were on a roll in October, with fresh meat sales driving 8.0% gains to lead the department to an overall 5.4% increase over October 2023. The five October weeks generated $10.0 billion, with $7.1 billion for fresh meat. While inflation played a role, pound sales increased by 3.4%, also driven by strong gains in fresh meat.

USDA WASDE Report Highlights 2024 Beef Market Trends

The USDA’s latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report offers insights into the evolving beef market, signaling continued growth and strong demand.

Beef Production Outlook:Higher dressed weights, increased cow slaughter, and unexpected cattle placements in late 2024 have raised beef production projections. These factors, according to the report, "more than offset lower expected steer and heifer slaughter."

Cattle Prices Rising:WASDE projects 2024 average cattle prices to reach $186.68/cwt, reflecting strong demand and recent market trends. Prices are expected to remain above $186/cwt through the third quarter of 2025, a notable increase from 2023's average of $175.54.

Beef Imports Surge:With strong domestic demand and ongoing cattle herd liquidation, U.S. beef imports are projected to stay robust. After reaching 3.725 billion pounds in 2023, imports are estimated to climb to 4.508 billion pounds in 2024. Shipments from Oceania and South America have exceeded expectations.

These trends emphasize the strength of the beef industry despite challenges like herd contraction, showcasing opportunities for producers and exporters alike.

  • We dive in the rules and regulations of USDA’s Electronic ID Tag Rule. We hear how to get some of the top Simmental and SimAngus Genetics. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel.

EPISODE 212 DETAILSUSDA ELECTRONIC ID TAGS EXPLAINED & TOP SIMMENTAL GENETICSUSDA Electronic ID Tag Rules ExplainedUSDA EID Tag Rule Sparks Questions

Producers are still confused about how to use the new USDA EID Tags, where to get them, and wondering if there are enough in circulation. Justin Tupper, President of the U.S. Cattlemen's Association and owner/manager of St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota helps explain the rules and shares his experience and thoughts on the program.

As the leading provider of EID tags and readers through the Allflex® brand, Merck Animal Health wants to support cattle producers in their decision-making with the expertise and solutions they need.

Key Distinctions With Official ID Rules

The new policy only applies to interstate movement. Other exemptions include direct-to-slaughter cattle and sexually intact cattle (and bison) under 18 months of age.Animals that will need electronically and visually readable tags when they enter interstate movement include:

Sexually intact cattle and bison 18 months or olderAll dairy cattle, including beef-on-dairy crossbred animalsCattle and bison of any age used for rodeo, recreation events, shows or exhibitions

Another important detail: Visual ear tags applied before Nov. 5, 2024, will be recognized as official IDs for the life of the animal. They’ll be grandfathered in and will not need an EID.

    Easing The Financial Burden

Producers and the livestock industry have raised concerns about the potential cost burden of the new tagging policies. Congress recently directed USDA-APHIS to allocate no less than $15 million for the cost of tags and related infrastructure to help offset those costs.2

Producers may be able to access EID tags for free via their state veterinarian. They can apply those tags at approved tagging sites. Producers can also buy EIDs directly from a distributor, online vendor or local dealer and apply the tags themselves.

In addition, producers are not required to invest in tag-reading hardware or software, unless they choose to do so for herd management and record keeping. The EID tags can be used the same way as visual tags.

    Addressing Data Privacy Concerns

EID tags are encoded with a number that identifies the animal, but no owner-specific information. The data associated with the tags will be stored in various federal and state databases.Access to that data will also be restricted to the state and federal officials responsible for managing high-impact diseases of the cattle industry.

    USDA agnostic on EID tags

USDA isn’t mandating or recommending any one brand of ear tag. Tags must be approved by the department and will be imprinted with the Official Eartag Shield. The Allflex radio frequency ID (RFID) tags offered by Merck Animal Health meet these standards. They use a short-read range that doesn’t interfere with radio frequencies commonly found in livestock operations. Allflex tags do not include any global positioning system (GPS) capabilities. Producers also use these RFID tags to track health protocols, performance, reproduction and genetics. The new tagging requirements are intended to bolster the industry’s tracing capabilities in the event of a disease outbreak. Contact your Merck Animal Health representative or tag supplier to find out how Allflex tags can help you comply with these rules while managing your beef or dairy operation more efficiently.

EPISODE 56 DETAILSFarmers & Ranchers Need To Register By January 1, 2025Time is Running Out: Farmers Must File BOI by January 1, 2025, to Avoid Fines and Jail Time

Attention farmers and agricultural businesses: A critical deadline is approaching.

Latest Beef Industry NewsAustralia & New Zealand Meat Industries Brace for Possible Trump Tariffs

Introduction:As Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House stirs conversations around economic policies, the agricultural sector, particularly animal agriculture, is bracing for potential impacts. Among the most discussed issues are Trump's proposed tariffs, which range from 10% to 20% on all U.S. imports and up to 60% on Chinese imports. These tariffs could have significant consequences for U.S. consumers and meat exporters like Australia and New Zealand, who have capitalized on increased demand following U.S. herd liquidations.

Trump's Proposed Tariffs on U.S. ImportsTrump’s proposed tariffs could raise prices on imported meat, directly impacting U.S. consumers. Australia and New Zealand, which have become key suppliers of beef to the U.S., would be particularly affected by these policies. Any increase in tariffs could result in reduced competitiveness for these exporters, potentially reducing meat supply in the U.S. market and driving prices higher for consumers.

Industry Reactions and ConcernsNathan Guy, independent chair of the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand, expressed concern in a recent interview. He stated that the industry would need to "breathe through it" over the coming months and adapt as the situation unfolds. Guy warned that new tariffs on New Zealand beef could ultimately "hurt the U.S. consumer even harder because they're going to have to pay more for the [beef] we produce."

Similarly, Stefan Vogel, general manager of RaboResearch Australia and New Zealand, highlighted in an interview with Weekly Times Now the potential strain these tariffs could place on meat industry players globally. The ripple effects could extend beyond beef to include lamb and other meats, affecting prices and availability for consumers across various markets.

Economic Impact on Animal AgricultureThe proposed tariffs would likely lead to shifts in supply and demand within the animal agriculture industry, impacting everything from feed prices to livestock management strategies. U.S. producers may see opportunities for increased market share, but these gains could be offset by rising costs and logistical challenges.

ConclusionTrump's proposed tariffs bring uncertainties for the global meat trade, potentially raising prices for U.S. consumers and creating challenges for exporters. As animal agriculture stakeholders prepare for possible policy changes, close attention to tariff developments and adaptive strategies will be key to navigating this evolving landscape.

EPISODE 55 DETAILSCertified Angus Beef Sells Well & Feeder Cattle SalesCertified Angus Beef Continues It’s Hot Streak

Sales remain strong for Certified Angus Beef (CAB), including with international customers. According to a report from Angus Journal, exports of CAB products are up 7.5% year over year, while overall beef exports are down 2% this year. That follows news of positive domestic growth, with 415 million CAB pounds to foodservice and 500 million pounds to retail. Canada, Mexico, South Korea and Japan, the Angus Journal noted, have been particularly strong markets for CAB products. Sales have also been robust in the Middle East markets of Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Oman, with sales up 80% from October 2023 through May 2024. Jones noted that 30% of all U.S. beef to the region is now CAB product.

Appeals Court Decides Whether Tyson Owes Ghost Cattle Operator

A federal appeals court sided with a Washington district court’s ruling that Tyson Fresh Meats did not owe Cody Allen Easterday any money for alleged breach-of-contract claims.

Easterday is currently serving a 11-year prison sentence for defrauding the company of $244 million in a ghost cattle scheme. Companies related to his operation had repaid at least $63 million to Tyson as of February 2023.

He claimed Tyson owed him approximately $100 million for using his likeness on meat product labels in Japan.

USDA Says Hog Had Wild H5N1, Utah Reports First Dairy Outbreak

The avian flu found in a backyard hog in Oregon appears to be a strain of H5N1 contracted directly from wild birds, rather than the strain that crosses over from birds to dairy cattle, according to top USDA officials.

Meanwhile, Utah has confirmed its first outbreak in dairy cattle, with infections discovered on eight farms in Cache County. The appearance followed the culling in early October of the entire flock of 1.8 million chickens after the virus was discovered on a Utah poultry facility for the first time since 2022.

Latest Beef Industry NewsEuropean Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban

The European Commission criticized Hungary’s proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market.

“No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU’s scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved.

The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments.

Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill.

Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections.

    NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA’s Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides.

Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA’s Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS.

Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger

The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey’s Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas’s Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. Selected from over 2,400 nominations across 410+ burgers, the contest’s top ten burgers — two from each of the state’s five regions — were judged on taste, appearance, cooking, and overall impression by an anonymous panel.

The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. The Arkansas Beef Council continues to support beef’s image and Arkansas's cattle industry through promotional and research efforts.

Latest Beef Industry News Vet Says Beef Producers Must Step Up With H5 Testing

A leading scientist and veterinarian, Kay Russo, warns the beef industry to start monitoring for H5 bird flu crossover from infected dairy herds. Speaking on the MeetingPod podcast, Russo noted that while the virus was first detected in dairy cattle in March and has since impacted poultry farms and workers, there's limited data on beef cattle.

Russo, with a DVM from Cornell and a master’s in avian health from the University of Georgia, emphasized the importance of testing beef cattle for antibodies now that a validated test exists. She stressed, "We can only manage what we know, and this virus isn’t going away.

Canadian Herd To Stabilize In 2025

The Canadian cattle herd is forecast to sustain the long-term trend of contraction to begin 2025 but will begin to stabilize by year’s end on improved feed pricing and availability. A smaller calf crop will be produced based on 2024 breeding stock but heifer retention should improve if feed conditions continue to remain stable or improve. Higher heifer retention coupled with a smaller calf crop will see lowered beef production and slaughter in 2025. As a percent of production, Canadian beef exports are forecast to remain strong while imports are forecast to soften on weakened consumer demand. For the complete article, click HERE.

    U.S. Beef Imports Up 21% in 2024

Through August 2024, U.S. beef imports saw a notable increase of 20.87%, rising from 2.51 billion pounds in 2023 to 3.03 billion pounds in 2024. Among the top contributing countries, Canada remained the largest supplier with 658.83 million pounds, a 3.18% increase from last year. Australia showed the most significant growth, with imports surging by 69.95%, reaching 635.69 million pounds, making it the second-largest beef exporter to the U.S. after Canada. Brazil also experienced a sharp increase of 41.89%, with imports growing to 496.21 million pounds.

On the other hand, Mexico saw a decrease of 15.54%, with imports dropping to 386.07 million pounds. Uruguay recorded the highest percentage growth among all countries, with imports increasing by 71.46% to 198.20 million pounds. New Zealand and Nicaragua also contributed to U.S. beef imports, with increases of 8.75% and 1.76%, respectively.

This growth in imports reflects increased global beef supply, with particular strength from regions like Australia and Uruguay, offsetting declines from Mexico. Overall, the U.S. beef import market has expanded significantly year-over-year.

EPISODE 52 DETAILSCould H5 Bird Flu Hit Our Beef Cattle Herds?Vet Says Beef Producers Must Step Up With H5 Testing

New Suspected H5 Cases In Humans Reported In Washington State

Health officials suspect that a strain of avian influenza linked to poultry operations has reached Washington State. The Washington State Department of Health (WSDH) reported four agricultural workers in Franklin County tested positive for H5 after working with infected birds at an egg-laying farm. About 800,000 birds were culled after testing positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The workers, who had mild symptoms, received antiviral treatment, according to WSDH.

Latest Beef Industry NewsFlorida’s Cultivated Meat Ban

A U.S. District Court in Northern Florida denied Upside Foods' request for a preliminary injunction on Florida's ban of cultivated meat. Chief Judge Mark Walker ruled the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act does not override the state's ban on the sale, distribution, or manufacture of cultivated meat. EPISODE 51 DETAILSUSDA Proposed Rules For Alternative Marketing Agreements For Fed Cattle USDA Works For Fairer Fed Cattle Markets

During a Farmer and Ranchers in Action event at the White House on Oct. 8, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced several steps to create transparency and fairer trading in the cattle markets.

Vilsack said the new actions are part of the effort under the Packers & Stockyards Act of 1921 to enhance price discovery in cattle markets. The agency released a report showing unjust and anticompetitive pricing strategies that exist in today’s beef market.

For years, USDA has fielded complaints from producers around beef packers using reported regional cash or spot prices as base prices for fed cattle formula pricing agreements, commonly known as Alternative Marketing Agreements (AMAs).

The USDA reports this is especially prominent in the fed cattle market as the share of cattle purchased by beef packers using AMAs increased to more than 70 percent while the average share of cattle sold in the negotiated cash spot market fell below 20 percent nationally.

USDA is issuing an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) to seek comment on several possible interventions to develop new benchmarks as AMA base prices and approaches to trading when using benchmarks.

The public is invited to comment on this proposed rulemaking by visiting Regulations.gov and commenting on the “Price Discover and Competition in Markets for Fed Cattle”. Comments will close on Dec. 10, 2024. Read the whole article HERE
