We’re told to always be in the present moment … we’re told to set goals and achieve them … we’re told that life’s short and to live every moment as if it where our last. Arrrgh, what does all this mean?? As one great lyricist wrote … “No-ones an island and sometimes it’s good to pretend” When was a time in your life you let yourself be ‘you’ and gave yourself the time to pretend? “Max’s Island” the podcast, exists so you can tell others WHY!

A long long time ago I began collecting inspirational quotes and aphorisms. I kept them on the first version of my web site, where they were displayed randomly. But as time went on, I realized I wanted them where I would see them. Eventually I copied the fledgeling collection onto 3×5 cards and put them in a small box. As I find new ones, I add cards. Countless times I’ve pulled another card and found it eerily appropriate to the challenges of the day. Countless times I’ve returned to my desk and felt inspired upon rediscovering an old card’s whispered counsel. Countless times, just as I was about to throw in the towel, I was saved by an echo from the little box on my desk.

A podcast about loving greatly through grief.
Scalawag knows that for many of us, our grief is simultaneously never news, and the only news. From the mind and lived experience of celebrated jazz artist Nnenna Freelon, Great Grief is a life-honoring outpouring of word, story, and song that plumbs the depths of her own sorrow after the death of her beloved husband, Philip, and her sister, Debbie Irene.
Award-winning Great Grief re-emerges at Scalawag through podcasts and live events as a dynamic space for Black women to indulge our griefs, savor our loves, and mourn in community. Each four-episode season is organized around topics that intertwine our grief experiences, topics like sisterhood, the inevitability of change, and Black love.
A new season drops every quarter, accompanied by a live opportunity to gather around our griefs in different cities across the South. Find out more about live events and other ways engage at: https://scalawagmagazine.org/great-grief/

Every Family’s Got One (EFGO) is devoted to telling true family stories. There’s nothing like family. We see each other at our noblest and nastiest – across the dinner table, on the Disney cruise, at our cousin’s wedding, and other mundane backdrops of family life where emotions run wild – and the most entertaining often-told family stories are created. Hosted by funny people Barbara Herel & Tony Mennuto (of NBC’s sketch comedy group Live On Tape), EFGO brings you family stories, from amazing storytellers, that are hilarious, cringeworthy, and unexpected. If you had to pass along one family story, what would you tell?

Have you ever wondered what being a star on Broadway is really like? Whether you’re in the industry, an aspiring performer or just a fan of theatre, “32 Bar Cut: The Show” takes its listeners on a journey with Broadway star Adrienne Walker, her husband, Broadway music director and pianist, Austin Cook and their incredible Broadway colleagues for an honest look at the life of performers on Broadway and stages across the world.
We rarely get the truth about the inner workings of Broadway and all that goes on behind the scenes, but here, the curtain is up, the fourth wall is down, and it’s time to get real! No topics are off-limits. Conversation topics include auditions, agents, casting calls, rehearsal processes, tech week, unions, opening night, performing, backstage practices, diversity on Broadway, and much more!
Adrienne and Austin both learned the hard way. It took them ten years to make it from tiny 12 seat black-box theaters in Chicago to conducting the Broadway production of Hamilton, or starring as “Nala” in Disney’s the Lion King on Broadway. Neither of them went to school for theatre. They made it to Broadway, and now you can too! Welcome to 32 Bar Cut!
