  • What is Culture and how can understanding it help you build influence, your personal brand and your career. I discussed this, his best-selling book For The Culture and so much more with Professor Marcus Collins on Episode 79 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

How Marcus got his big break running digital strategy for Beyoncé,

How he learnt that facilitating an existing community is more powerful than building it from scratch,

What is culture and the three systems of culture?

What is a congregation and how it can help spread the message?

Differentiating products and services through the feelings they evoke rather than value and function,

Moving your target audience through emotion,

How brands like Patagonia and REI put their values into action even if it may potentially cost them financially,

Find the “true believers”, who love you and your product and focus on cultivating a connection with them,

Strategies for cutting through the noise and stand out from the crowd, and

Creating content consistently over time and not focusing simply on what is popular as you never know who is viewing your content.

Marcus believes there is no external force more influential to human behavior than culture. What we wear, what we eat, where we work, how we vote, and just about every facet of social living is informed by our cultural subscriptions. So he studies cultural contagion and how it manifests in our consumption proclivities, organizational dynamics, and society writ large. He leverages his scholarly work as a clinical professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, and the many years he spent in marketing as an advertising executive—most recently as the head of strategy at Wieden+Kennedy, New York—to bridge the academic-practitioner gap and use this knowledge to help people get people to take action.

Throughout his career, he has been acknowledged for his strategic, creative, and scholarly contributions (American Advertising Federation’s Advertising Hall of Achievement inductee, Thinkers50 Radar Distinguished Achievement Award, Cannes Lion Creative Strategy juror, Ad Age's 40 Under 40 recipient, and Crain’s Business 40 Under 40 recipient) as well as launched successful campaigns like “Cliff Paul” for State Farm, the Made In America Music Festival, and Google’s “Real Tone” technology—among others. Before his tenure in advertising, he worked in music and tech as a startup co-founder. Then he led iTunes + Nike sports music initiatives at Apple before running digital strategy for Beyoncé.

He is the author of the best-selling book, For The Culture, which examines the relationship between culture and human behavior. He has spent the last decade helping organizations—from Fortune 500 companies to startups and non-profits—use this knowledge to create culturally contagious ideas that get people to move. The book aims to do the same for readers.

He is a graduate of Temple University (DBA) and the University of Michigan (BSE in Materials Science Engineering and MBA with an emphasis in strategic brand marketing).

  • In this episode, we will learn about potential strategies for navigating the uncertainty, disruption and fear that comes from mergers, acquisitions and other business transformation. I discussed this and so much more with Jennifer J. Fondrevay, the founder of Day1 Ready™ and author of "Now What? A Survivor’s Guide for Thriving Through Mergers and Acquisitions", on Episode 76 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

Pivoting from her initial dream to be the US Ambassador to France to a career in advertising and marketing,

Building your personal brand and digital footprint with marketing principles,

Being thoughtful about your appearance and respecting your audience whether at interview or presenting,

    Strengthening connections through finding commonalities,

The lessons she learnt that helped her become a better leader,

Her TEDx talk and focusing on the things we can control such as Talent, Effort & Attitude (TEA),

    The power of story telling,

Managing the uncertainty and disruption arising from M&A and business transformation,

Understanding the value you bring to any potential employer, and

Don’t be afraid to move jobs if things are not working out but have a strategy to help you navigate the transition.

Jennifer is the Founder of Day1 Ready™, a consultancy that advises forward-thinking business leaders, owners, and C-Suite executives on how to prepare for the human capital challenges of M&A. As a Fortune 500 C-Suite “survivor” of three multibillion-dollar acquisitions, Jennifer has been on all sides of the deal equation. She saw countless growth strategies fail due to a workforce that couldn’t pivot and adapt as quickly as leadership anticipated. When her Harvard Business Review (HBR) article “After a Merger, Don’t Let “Us vs. Them” Thinking Ruin the Company” went viral, Jennifer recognized the power and interest in a human-centric approach to business transformation, where employees are at the heart of the change. She shares her expertise as a contributor to: Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Thrive Global, American Marketing Association, Middle Market Growth; and as a frequent podcast guest and keynote speaker for HR conferences, associations, and Fortune 500 companies.

Jennifer and I talked about how you can turn things round if you encounter difficulties when leading a new team. She told me "What they wanted to know is how was I going to help them in the present moment, right? They hadn't had a leader in a year and … I worked that much harder to see how can I help this team? What value do I bring to this team? It's not about what I've done in the past, but it's what I can do now to help them in the future, moving forward. It made me work so much harder … it was about what I could do to contribute to their future."

  • How can insights from a successful career in science and engineering boost your creativity, innovation and career? I discussed this and so much more with Dr Jayshree Seth, Corporate Scientist and Chief Science Advocate at 3M, on Episode 74 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

Not worrying about where your career starts and focusing on the journey,

Developing creativity and incorporating innovation into your work,

How learning from failure and being resilient can help your career

The importance of good communication with your stakeholders and managing their expectations,

    The mosaic building framework,

Becoming comfortable with change and uncertainty,

Insights to stand out in a job interview,

Strategies to develop your leadership skills and

Not underestimating the impact of luck (good and bad) in your career.

Jayshree is a Corporate Scientist at 3M and currently holds 80 patents for a variety of innovations, with several additional pending. She joined 3M in 1993 after an MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University, New York. Jayshree was appointed 3M’s first ever Chief Science Advocate in 2018 and is using her scientific knowledge, technical expertise and professional experience to advance science and communicate the benefits of science and the importance of diversity in STEM fields to drive innovation. She is the author of the books, The Heart of Science – Engineering Footprints, Fingerprints, & Imprints, and The Heart of Science – Engineering Fine Print published by the Society of Women Engineers, and all sales proceeds go to a scholarship for underrepresented minority women in STEM. She is a sought-after speaker, globally, on a multitude of topics such as innovation, leadership and STEM advocacy and has featured in local, national and international media.

Jayshree and I talked about learning from failure and she told me: "People are not that comfortable with not knowing and if it doesn't work the way they wished for it to work, it's a failure. Emulating this scientific approach, can benefit career development because you can just adopt a mindset of continuous experimentation and learning … See, we can only learn if we act. And if we act, we can fail. Of course, if you don't act, you can fail too, because you just failed to innovate … embracing failure is part of the learning journey. You build resilience, adaptability, willingness to take risk."

  • Looking for strategies and insights to help you work with anyone? Amy Gallo and I discussed this, her best-selling book Getting Along and so much more on Episode 73 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

Don't be afraid to reach out to people you don't know, people are more helpful than you realise and fortunately, Amy said yes, when I asked her for this episode,

How Amy played to her strengths and shaped her career to align with them,

The potential benefits of facing up to and managing conflict at work,

Why good relationships at work matter,

Dealing with passive aggressive behaviour at work,

Managing a difficult boss, especially an insecure one,

Dealing with a political operator at work and how to get fair credit for your efforts on a project,

The benefits of diverse teams, and

Other principles for getting along with your colleagues.

Amy is a workplace expert who writes and speaks about gender, interpersonal dynamics, difficult conversations, feedback, and effective communication. She is the author of Getting Along: How to Work with Anyone (Even Difficult People) and the HBR Guide to Dealing with Conflict, as well as hundreds of articles for Harvard Business Review. For the past three years, Amy has co-hosted HBR’s popular Women at Work podcast, which examines the struggles and successes of women in the workplace.

She is frequently sought out by media outlets for her perspective on workplace dynamics, conflict, and difficult conversations. Her advice has been featured in The New York Times, Fast Company, Marketplace, and The Austin American-Statesman, as well as on WNYC, the BBC, and ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

Amy and I talked about managing conflict and she told me: "It is the nature of human relationships that we are going to have conflict, we're going to have disagreements. It's not always going to be perfect, and that's okay … we are just told that conflict has to be heated and mean, and we conflate it with war and with fracturing of relationships, and I would encourage your listeners, choose the three people in your life who you feel closest to, who you trust. My guess is you have conflict with them, right? This is part of being in relationship with other people, and so we have to learn how to embrace it as something that gives us some positive benefits rather than something that should be avoided at all costs."

  • Looking for ideas and strategies to help you gain a better understanding of yourself and discover insights to improve your career and life? Emilie West, the author of Maximum You, and I discussed this, her work and much more on Episode 71 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

Gaining perspective and seeing the bigger picture,

Finding roles which play to your strengths,

Strategies to develop your leadership skills,

Ideas to help you in your job search,

Understanding what makes you unique and articulating this when applying for jobs and interviewing,

Don't put too much pressure on yourself when interviewing as this may stop your authentic self coming out,

The importance of being consistent during your job search and career, and

How to manage a difficult boss.

Emilie is an award-winning coach and speaker who helps her personal and business clients define and achieve their goals through positive change. Emilie combines her coaching experience with her knowledge as a wellness expert to provide holistic coaching supporting mental resilience, physical health and career success. Emilie believes that the key to true inner confidence and life satisfaction lies in taking time to better understand ourselves, learning to play to our strengths and living life authentically. As well as holding a degree in Economics from Warwick University, Emilie is a qualified Nutritional Therapist and an accredited Emotional Intelligence Coach. She is the author of Maximum You, which was recently published and is a great read.

Emilie talked with me about when you're looking for a new job, think about what makes you unique and how you can stand out from the other candidates and told me that. She told me "it's not always the obvious path that gets you where you want to go. Really stop and think about your strengths. You want to go and interview for a job where you are exactly what they're after. If you get very clear on what you're good at, there will be a company out there that really wants what you have to offer. So it's being very good at articulating that, both in a CV, a covering letter, and then with my clients, I will put them through interview practice, and help them get better and better at articulating what their strengths are ... So rather than comparing and despairing ... Think about what advantages do you have over the other candidates?"

  • Learning about philosophy may seem like a luxury in our fast paced world but it has a number of benefits for your career and life, including developing your critical thinking skills and the ability to solve complex problems. Dr Brennan Jacoby, a philosopher and the founder of Philosophy at Work, and I discussed this, his work with Philosophy at Work and much more on Episode 69 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

How serendipity and chance can impact your career,

Plato’s allegory of the cave and how this inspired Brennan’s interest in philosophy,

The benefits of reframing and changing your perspective,

How philosophy can help manage uncertainty and decision making,

Stoic philosophy and controlling what you can control,

Strategies for dealing with failure and regret,

How doing philosophy can develop your thinking and problems solving skills and

Ways of creating space in your schedule to have time to think.

Dr. Brennan Jacoby is a philosopher and the founder of Philosophy at Work, a collective of philosophers that teach the thinking skills professionals need to think their best. Brennan holds a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D in philosophy, and his doctoral work analysed trust in the context of interpersonal relationships and corporate character.

Recent projects include helping Deloitte UK cultivate a growth mindset, supporting The Wellcome Trust to explore trust in healthcare, and enhancing curiosity across Sony Music’s global community.

Brennan works across industries and sectors (examples include groups from Herbert Smith Freehills, Sky, Sony Music, Slaughter and May, Hogan Lovells, Capital One Bank, Deloitte, Media Arts Lab, Ropes and Gray, The Guardian, Nike, and The Financial Times), and with global teams, having delivered sessions in the UK, Ireland, USA, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Spain, Australia and Taiwan.

In addition to his role with Philosophy at Work, Brennan is a fellow at the Royal Society of the Arts. Originally from Detroit Michigan, he studied in Sydney, Australia and is now based in the UK.

Brennan talked with me about the benefits of philosophy and how it helps to develop your thinking and told me “complex problem solving, critical thinking and creative thinking are things that are needed for the future of work, for the fourth Industrial Revolution and that's what you get, those are the muscles that are built up when you do philosophy because you're given a tough challenge … doing philosophy is good for careers because we know that careers these days are so dependent on not just what you know but how you make sense of the data and also how you move from one thing you know to the next right or from one job to the next and so it's good not just for work but it's particularly good for careers because of careers being about how you navigate things right how you move from one point to the next.”

  • Looking for insights and strategies to boost your job search in the new year? As we're coming up to the start of the new year, I wanted to experiment with a different format and this episode focuses entirely on job search and has bite size clips from some of the previous guests on the podcast.

Now that there are close to 70 episodes, some new listeners are not sure where to start so hopefully this will help. If this is successful, I will look to create episodes on different themes including leadership, mindset, communication and building your network. Please let me know what you think.

The episode will begin by looking at mindset and its importance, especially if you have been laid off and are looking to start your job search with Amii Barnard-Bahn (Episode 18) and Octavia Goredema (Episode 57).

The focus moves onto how to get your job search started and some strategies that may help with Minola Jac (Episode 50), Emilie West (Episode 12), Jenny Foss (Episode 49), Dorie Clark (Episode 5) and Simon Alexander Ong (Episode 11).

Following this will be insights on the interview process and ideas to help you stand out and ace that interview with Shola Kaye (Episode 14), Navid Nazemian (Episode 44) and Paul Berry (Episode 38).

We finish with ideas to keep your motivation going if you're not getting the results you want and ways of managing failure with Dr Kurt Nelson (Episode 61) and Tammy Gooler Loeb (Episode 59).

I hope you found these insights helpful and wishing you success in your job search in 2024!

Tony Martignetti and I spoke about the importance of mindset when it comes to your job search and he told me "Get your mindset right because if you show up to an interview or to a networking event and you're still feeling down about yourself, it's hard to put on that strong face. Spend some time getting yourself to build the confidence, build back your resilience and part of that is also looking back. One of my exercises I do with coaching clients is basically going back into the past, doing an inventory of who I am, what brought me here, what are the things that make me who I am, and then going into the future and saying, well, who do I want to be?"

Alicia and I talked about how can your personal stories help you stand out in an interview. She told me: "If you think about five people going into a job interview for one role, what's the one thing that's going to set you apart? It's your stories. They don't have your life. They haven't done what you have done in your career specific to the people you work with, this specific project, the numbers, the quantifiable results ... that's what's going to make you unique and stand out."

  • What is perfectionism and does it lead to success and better performance? Professor Thomas Curran and I discussed this, other insights from his best selling book “The Perfection Trap”, being interviewed by Gwyneth Paltrow and much more on Episode 65 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

How Thomas has had a non-linear career but has bounced back from difficult experiences,

Failure is part of life and reframing failure can help to manage its impact,

    What is perfectionism?

Understanding your purpose and not seeking external validation to provide meaning and motivation,

How both genetic and environmental factors impact perfectionism,

The dangers of comparing yourself to others,

Setting realistic goals which are in line with your values and enjoying the journey,

Why perfectionism does not lead to greater success and performance, and

    Strategies for managing perfectionism.

Thomas grew up in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, before studying at De Montfort University and the University of Leeds, UK, where he received his PhD in psychology. He taught at several universities in Australia and the UK before joining the Department of Psychological and Behavioral Science at the London School of Economics as a professor in 2019.

He studies the personality characteristic of perfectionism, how it develops, and how it impacts on mental health. His TED talk on perfectionism has received more than three million views.

His research has been featured in media ranging from the Harvard Business Review to New Scientist to CNN and he has appeared on numerous television and radio programs. He is the author of The Perfection Trap.

Thomas and I talked about how becoming comfortable with failure can lead to success, he told me "What's a much more healthier way is to recognise failure as part and parcel of the learning process and actually if we can release the power of failure then we're likely to be more successful because we won't engage in those sabotaging behaviors that mean we avoid challenge and difficulty and try to choose the path of least resistance you know that might be good for success in the short term but when we're thinking about Innovation, knowledge economy and all the rest of it the modern workplace requires creativity, innovation that's where you're going to elevate yourself in those companies and above other people. I think we've got to get comfortable with failure."

  • Want to understand why saying no is so hard and how it can help free up time to focus on the things that really matter to you? Professor Vanessa Patrick and I discussed this, her new book “The Power Of Saying No” and much more on Episode 64 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

The importance of personal branding and sharing information that is of value for your audience,

Why it’s so hard to say no,

    What is an empowered refusal?,

How can you say no to your boss,

The A.R.T. framework of saying no,

What is a personal policy and how it helps you to say no,

Think of saying no as a way of allowing you to spend your time the way you want rather than being dictated by someone else,

A matrix to help work out which asks you should accept or refuse through assessing their relative benefits and costs,

How to say no to “office housework” and other non promotable tasks, and

Ways of dealing with “walnuts”, people who don’t take no for an answer.

Vanessa Patrick, PhD. is the Associate Dean for Research, Executive Director of Doctoral Programs (PhD and DBA), a Bauer Professor of Marketing and lead faculty of the Executive Women in Leadership Program at the Bauer School of Business at the University of Houston.

In 2012, she was named one of the top 50 most productive marketing scholars worldwide by the DocSig of the American Marketing Association. She is a prominent scholar in her field and serves on editorial and policy boards of leading academic journals. She is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Marketing Research and the Journal of Marketing.

Vanessa and I talked about building a personal brand and she told me "Marketing is about creating value. When you are thinking about yourself as a brand, you have to be thinking about how do I create value in whatever I touch? And that means that you not only have to do good work, but people need to know that you can do good work ... You can think about your brand as a function of what people talk about you, your reputation and what you do, what associations do they have with you?"
