The U.S. administration has introduced a proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. XPression Maps users can apply this update if desired using OpenStreetMap styles, as the name has not been updated on Microsoft BING! Maps. Watch this video to learn how to make this adjustment.

XPression has supported software-based licenses since version 11.0 was released. If you receive a software license and want to install it, here is a quick tutorial for those of you NOT using an RPM Server for your licenses, but just received the Product Key for software activation.

A while back, we did a tutorial on adding the Matrox X.mio2 cards into XPression. This video shows users how to add the current DSX and X.mio3-X.mio5 I/O cards into XPression. This assumes you have the right drivers installed, which you can get by reaching out to [email protected]

There are a lot of users working in XPression using Excel files between multiple users and XPression DataLinq™ who are getting notifications that the file is already in use. Microsoft changed the way they share Excel files, as they have more users working in the cloud with OneDrive or other file sharing applications. The way graphics people are sharing files, is based in the Legacy mode, which might not be so easy to figure out. This video shows users how to set up Legacy Sharing in Excel, and gets users back to working on a shared file the way they need to.

In the original release of XPression 11.5, we added SHA-512 hashing to increase the security of user accounts accessing the XPression Project Server. Inside a single station, this is an easy update to create, but for station groups or situations where various organizations have access to a single shared XPression Project Server, not every XPression system will be on the same version of XPression.
To provide the most flexibility to users with the latest version of XPression, we have enabled the ability for them to use a Legacy Mode to access older versions of XPression Project Server. This is found in XPression version 11.5 build 5811 or higher.

Controlling XPression playout in a MOS environment can be hectic, so we have added a couple of new features to the Remote Sequencer and Rundown Controller software. There is now a connection status indicator for the XPression Gateway in both applications. On Rundown Controller’s toolbar icon, when any changes to rundowns happen in the newsroom, the toolbar icon will flash, and a notification icon will appear and flash over the Rundown controller icon.
In Remote Sequencer, when using the Project Server tool to change projects used in creating new Take Items, a username and password is now required.

Mixing two new features together in this video, since these two new Visual Logic Functions work together. String Match allows the user to “match” the string of text in a String Value block or Text Object against list of items within the String Match block. When it finds a match, it outputs the index value, which can get passed along to a String Selector function block, to choose the desired String Value, linked to the Index (integer) which was just passed along. Think of it as a very flexible way to make lookup tables in Visual Logic.

The XPression Import Tool now has an option to allow the user to choose to either replace existing scenes with the new scene being imported, or to rename the scene being imported Before it is being imported.

There are not a lot of restrictions in naming conventions in XPression, however a couple of changes needed to be implemented. The use of a period in the file name can interfere with scripting functions, so users are warned about them. Duplicate names of objects can also cause issues, so users are now prohibited from duplicating names in the same scene.

When the XPression Single Scene Export tool was created, as a way to share a single scene between two or more users/systems; Windows did not recognize the file. XPression did, and when browsing your file system through XPression it was possible to find the file. However, browsing the Windows File System directly, the XPE files were not associated with any application. Well, not anymore!…and did you see that tool now has a Scale Thumbnail size too, too? Very cool.

Setting up user accounts and putting them into User Groups by Role is critical to setting up a shared XPression Project Server. These settings will determine which users have access to projects and how they can use them. Role Based Access Control is only as good as the administration of the user accounts and groups.

Larger facilities which support multiple production groups may share resources such as a Project Server. However, it might not be such a great idea to grant everyone the same level of access to all the files on the Project Server. It is now possible to use Role Based Access Control (RBAC) to control who gets to do what with the files on the XPression Project Server, starting with version 11.5.

Some of the most sought aftereffects in XPression have relied on using scripting to accomplish them. Well, we are working to break down those barriers. One of the more common requests is a way to trigger animations when a text object in a Take Item is already on the frame buffer. Well, there is a new Visual Logic block for OnSetText, which can trigger so many different things in XPression, so find your favorite way to do it.

Data-driven graphics use a wide range of data sources to provide the most support. The work to provide authentication to HTTP and RSS data feeds has also allowed us to add support for Google Sheets in DataLinq™. Take a quick look to see how it is done, and if it can work for you.

There are times when the operator would prefer that DataLinq™ not update a Take Item. It is now possible to click on a button to disable DataLinq™ Updates for a Take Item, until the operator uses the same button to re-enable DataLinq™ for that Take Item. This is helpful to capture a Take Item with a specific data set from the data feed, or to disable updates when the data feed is disrupted.

Not everyone uses traditional SDI or SMPTE IP workflows in their video production. Some use NDI, which is becoming a common video transport format. XPression included NDI as a choice for video I/O back in the release of XPression version 6.7. Here is a quick video showing how to set up NDI in XPression.

Sometimes, the Shape Style tools are not enough. Maybe you need to show a pattern within the boundaries of a country, or only a portion of the country.
The Drawing Relation function of the Shape Editor tools allows the user to choose which item on the Map flight generates the mask when a shape and area overlap. This opens up a great deal of freedom and power when it comes to adding visual aids to the map which might still be subject to being within the borders.

If you watched the last video, you saw how much time it took to select and delete individual anchor points on an Area Shape.
…we thought it took too long, too…Now it is possible to select multiple anchor points. Select the first point to delete, hold the shift key, then select the last point you want to delete. Then press the Delete key and those points will just go away. Deleted too many, well, “CTRL” + “Z” will undo and magically restore them.

Once the Maps Designer has changed where the border of a country is, it might be required to change the outline of the country and re-define how it appears on the map.
Using the Area Drawing Tools, it is possible to define the actual shape, and provide a way to use the new country shape in both the XPression Maps Design software and the XPression Maps MOS workflow. Using the new User Predefined Objects workflow and Area Drawing Tools, and Drawing Relation tools, its pretty easy to create new country shapes.

While there are globally recognized borders for countries around the world, there are situations where the borders recognized by one country may differ from where they are recognized by others. In XPression Maps 3.4, it is now possible to choose between two different border sets for countries where they are disputed. This allows Maps Designers to choose to use borders which are locally recognized by their audience, which might be different than what others feel the border location might be.
