  • Elizabeth is @earletted on Instagram and I first 'met' her through her blog.

When you finally meet an online friend and start chatting you find out how rich their background of experience is.

I hope you'll listen to Elizabeth and see she has held half a dozen amazing jobs that have been inspired by her motivation to be creative.

She has a music background, a theatre background in both design and wardrobe supervisor and the list goes on. I felt with her wardrobe supervisor experience, Elizabeth knows how to mend clothes for theatre. And can't life be full of drama sometimes too?

Lisa is a lifelong vintage inspired seamstress and dressmaking teacher.

She created Bobo_Bun’s sewing school in Norwich UK. As a child Lisa was always making something or could be found curled up with a book. Does this sound like you too?

Lisa first learnt to sew on her mum’s Vintage Singer Sewing machine. She’d been sewing non stop since then, learning everything she could while teaching as her full time career.
These days, if Lisa is not teaching dressmaking classes, you’ll find her sewing, knitting or planning her next project

  • Suzy, Sue and Hélène are the Make a garment a month or Magam sewalong team who's podcast was published in July 2020. Suzy and Sue and Hélène gave their time to tell us about how Magam sewalong began and what they do to keep this initiative running. Magam Sewalong is number 18 in the Top 20 Countdown.

You would have noticed that since 2020, they have had guests to run this challenge each month and with a theme. Love a good theme. They’ve had about 37 guests.

Here’s an interesting fact. They try not to count entries, but they’ve have had over 8,000 posts.

Sue said ‘People love the refashioning/sustainable themes, but also any theme that allows them to work it into their monthly sewing.’

  • Instagram is where SewOver50 account lives and started on 18 August 2018 by Judith Staley. She was shortly joined by Sandy Bach and together they built SewOver50 from 0 to 50,000 followers this month.

Their hard work to bring the face of older sewists to Instagram has delivered 1,821 posts; worked with 144 guest editors on a range of topics; created 18 engaging challenges and commissioned #So50Live.

In this podcast Judith and Sandy discuss their challenges with the many changes Instagram has thrown us all making it harder to find each other the way you would normally chat up with your real life friends.

SewOver50 showcases not just the face of older sewists but also the issues older sewists face on a daily basis.

Seeing clickbait news about ageing is cheap journalism. One of the earliest articles about wearing florals was very narrowminded press that as a community, we've blown that thinking out of the park.

No matter your age or what your style is, everyone is welcomed to the SewOver50 community by simply using #SewOver50 and #SewOver50(monthyear) on their posts so we can add you to our stories and onto our grid.

In 2022 there is the podcast episode about older sewist research on their Instagram grids that Judith commissioned. Judith is committed to raising the visibility of older sewists. Sandy is leading the SewOver50 social media editorial team and developing challenges and ways to engage the community.

Their mandate is positive messages to bring people together. Make sure you follow SewOver50 and listen to all the SewOver50 podcasts available here.

  • This Check Your Thread Podcast episode #54 is the first of two featuring a conversation with Swedish-Australian designer Birgitta Helmersson.

Known in the sewing community as a zero waste (ZW) pattern designer, Birgitta also produces a range of ZW clothing which she sells from her shop/studio in Malmö. Prior to this, Birgitta had a diverse and convoluted career in fashion design, costume, alterations, pattern cutting and garment manufacture, which makes for a fascinating tale that we’ll hear in this episode. We also learn what sparked her interest in ZW design, the route she took to adopting ZW practices in her own business, and why Birgitta transitioned into producing sewing patterns for her designs as well as physical garments.

  • A behind the scenes chat with Zoe Edwards. Her sewing podcast Check Your Thread keeps her motivated. Actually her manifesto is what drives Zoe's podcast.

    What drives your podcast?

Everyone wants to podcast about a topic that is close to their hearts. That's what both Zoe and I do every week and in this episode we chat on about the processes behind making a sewing podcast, or any podcast for that matter.

As always in this episode I've edited it so you hear Zoe's personal dedication to her podcast as it fulfills much of her manifesto. Any new podcast Zoe may develop in the future will also fulfill the aspects of her very personal manifesto. She's really interesting to listen to and learn from.

  • Zoe Edwards has just finished a very successful Me Made May 2024. She's here to Feed swap from her podcast Check your thread.

We're sharing one podcast episode next week from our own archives. This is really exciting to know 1 episode from Sew Organised Style will forever be available on Check your thread podcast.

However this week we're playing a variation on '20 questions'.

In today's episode, we delve into the feedswapping concept.
I've never heard about feedswapping and I am thankful to Zoe for proposing this entertaining initiative, which is our focus today.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to listen to both of our podcasts. We have each edited the same recording in our unique styles.

As a heads up, you'll realise that our version of '20 questions' will be included in the next podcast with Zoe 'BTS podcasting life'.

Many people want to podcast and our podcast experience will help you understand how the hard work behind the scenes using much of our sewing time and has its rewards.

  • Dell is an avid sewist, a SewOver50 follower and a very supportive listener of this sewing podcast.

She learned to sew from her grandmothers and Dell discusses the value of the sewing teaching by Mary Brooks Picken.

Dell saved lots of money sewing her dresses for vocal performances using Bemberg lining because it was more affordable than silk fabric was. She is a classically trained vocalist...like an opera singer.
