There is no escaping menopause. Every woman will experience this life-changing event, with varying degrees of disruption to our lives. For many, they attribute menopause to the disintegration of their marriage. Listen in as nurse practitioner Laura Chastain discusses the effects of perimenopause and menopause on our bodies and relationships, and shares tips on how to communicate with your spouse and manage your symptoms.
Menopause can significantly impact relationships due to hormonal fluctuations causing mood swings, irritability, and changes in libido, leading to emotional strain, reduced intimacy, and potentially leading to marital breakdown. A survey found that 73% of women blamed menopause for their marriage breakdown, and 67% claimed it led to increased arguments and instances of domestic abuse. Yet societal attitudes toward menopause are negative and stigmatized, leading some women to not discuss it or seek help for symptoms. Laura Chastain, a nurse practitioner with OptimizeU discusses:
The signs and symptoms for entering perimenopause and menopause and expected duration.
Treatment options and the type of professional who can help with hormone therapy.
How to initiate conversation with your male partner and what topics to cover.
How to discuss menopause with teenage children in the home.
When emotions are not rational and when it's time to seek help.

So many times, the focus is on the wifeās perspective. But what if we explored divorce from the husbandās perspective? What if we attempt to understand his emotions, his pain and motives? Listen as Dr. Bernadette Atanga, a physician, speaker, and leadership coach with more than 30 years of experience in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with special interest in Emotional Health and Cultural and author of Beneath the Armor: 8 Practical Strategies for Men to Embrace Vulnerability and Lead with Authentic Strength" shares her unique insight gleaned from her experiences with men going through divorce.
We often think of divorce as a male driven event, with many men moving on to new lives without a look back. But that is not the rule in every case. Divorce can be exceptionally challenging for men and it often leads to feelings of grief, loss, and a disruption of their identity and sense of purpose. Many men struggle to process the emotional fallout, as they grieve over the loss of their roles in the family, which can lead to depression and loneliness. Letās take a step forward in deepening our understanding of divorce from the husbandās perspective. Dr. Atanga discusses:
The importance of men leading from the boardroom to the family room. Many times men are leaders at work but fail to carry that role through to the family.
The typical reaction of a man when the wife says she wants a divorce and how frequently they feel blindsided.
The advice men are given by friends and why that is harmful.
The increased risk of suicide by men going through divorce.
How unresolved emotions stemming for trauma in youth impact a manās marriage.

Substance abuse is cited as the main factor in nearly 35 percent of divorces. Older adults are using opioids, alcohol, marijuana, and heroin at increasing rates. So much so, that it is being called the silent epidemic. Listen as Debbie Loudermilk, the Director of Outpatient Services for the Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, discusses why this is happening at increasing rates and who is most at risk.
Drug abuse among older adults is often hard to detect because the signs and symptoms mimic those of old age. Substance abuse can have a significant negative effect on diabetes, heart failure, and raise one's risk for heart attack.
Debbie shares the signals that someone is abusing drugs or alcohol, as well as how to go about discussing it with a loved one, if you suspect substance abuse is happening.

Understanding your options for the house when undergoing divorce is a significant challenge. Often, we make the decision on whether to keep or sell the house based on our emotions. When the divorce bomb has gone off, and couples turn to what is often the most highly valued asset - the house - the first steps they should take.
The five options for the house in divorce.
Important considerations before deciding to keep the house.
If you keep the house, how to protect that asset in the event you remarry in the future.

Thatās why the co-founders of Aimee Says decided to explore how to leverage the capabilities of advanced AI to understand and respond to common power and control dynamics seen in abusive relationships. Their goal was to see if this technology could offer relevant, empathetic responses to those seeking help.

What domestic abuse is and the signs someone is suffering from domestic abuse.
Some of the common fears for women who are victims of domestic violence.
Common issues for women of domestic violence - i.e., physical, mental, substance abuse, self-harm.
Common barriers to women seeking support for domestic violence.
What you can share with Aimee about Domestic Abuse.

*Please comment and share* If you want to succeed in dating, marriage, and friendship, OR are divorced and want to know why, listen in as Matthew Fray, author of This is how your marriage ends: A hopeful approach to saving relationships, shares how our seemingly innocent behaviors we do with no thought destroys love and trust.
Matthew discusses how generally perceived innocent or benign acts in a relationship can erode and destroy trust over time. A relationship absent trust does not feel safe. More importantly, losing trust does not have to be caused by a major event. He relates the story of his marriage ending because of dishes left in the sink.
Matthew shares the invalidating triple threat in relationships: We contradict our spouseās intellectual experiences; we contradict their emotional experience; and we defend our character and justify our actions based on what we knew at the time. Therefore, we imply that we will repeat the behaviors.
Matthew encourages us to begin to see people through their perspective. For those already divorced, he helps to understand what went wrong and how to avoid a similar problem in future relationships.

What is post-separation abuse? It is abuse that continues after you have physically separated from your spouse. It does not have to mean physical violence. When couples separate, abuse can take many forms and extracts an emotional toll on the entire family. Abuse can include: financial, intimidation, legal, and isolation.
In this bonus episode, I will share ways you can protect yourself from post-separation abuse.

Your divorce can shake their foundation. Listen in as Linda Hershman, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, shares the significant impact on the adult children of divorcing parents and steps you should take to ease the transition.
Linda relates that adult children suffer an ambiguous loss, yet society expects them to āsuck it upā and get over it. She shares concrete rules for managing adult children during divorce. Her number one rule is that you should always love your children more than you hate your ex. That means not giving the adult children the gory details, resisting the urge to trash talk your ex, and learning to be independent and not looking to your children as substitutes for your ex.
Facing a parentsā divorce can be very emotionally challenging, especially if it comes at a time when the adult children are raising their own families and may have small children, or they were out of the house and did not see conflicts in the marriage. Linda shares actionable tips on how to break the news, discuss when the other parent is lying, and how to navigate when an affair partner is involved.

Is your marriage teetering on the edge and you are not sure if you should file for divorce? Listen in as Demetrius and Emily Russell share how their marriage was at the precipice of a cliff and they found a way back to a married life they love to live together.
Demetrius and Emily Russell have been married 27 years. Twelve years into their marriage, they entered a rocky time and Emily knew she was unhappy enough to want a divorce. Emily, by nature, was an independent woman who came into the marriage with her own identity. She had a career as a Registered Nurse and became a Business Project Senior Analyst with a major corporation. Over time, she found that her identity was lost in the marriage and she no longer knew who she was. This was not how she wanted to live her life. Demetrius was blindsided when Emily gathered the courage to share her unhappiness. The couple separated in the home, and discussed divorce.
After a period of months separated, Demetrius and Emily came to the hard truth that they wanted to fight for their marriage. They share their inspiring story of the steps they took to regain the foundation of friendship they had when they first met and the resolve to save their relationship. Demetrius and Emily also discuss the secret sauce to getting out of the rut of living as roommates and building a strong foundation for a lasting marriage.
