    Letting go of what drains us is a practice that takes discipline. Deciding what drains you and what makes you stronger is a personal question but a very important one to ask oneself. Simply asking if this thought or this behaviour or this circumstance is adding to or detracting from my store of energy can be enough to begin the process of discernment; that is the process of knowing what nourishes me versus what drains me. If we can practice letting go of what doesn’t make us stronger, we will find a store of energy that we didn’t even realize was available to us.

    Anxiety often spikes when we’re feeling unsafe or unsupported in some way. It sometimes becomes a chronic feeling though, one that keeps us up at night. It could be any number of things that trigger it - worry over health, finances, time, relationships, work, your loved ones, decisions you need to make...you name it. The good news is that your breath is like a magical key to help turn the anxiety down a few notches. The breath is our most powerful ally, because when the breath slows down, the body can begin to feel safe.

    Sleep is weird.  And still remains something of a mystery to scientists.  It’s only recently that we’ve had the medical technology to get a glimpse into what sleep is, what it does and why we need it.  In other episodes, we’ve gone over some of the physiological functions that are cleansed or strengthened during sleep… improving memory, strengthening immunity, helping your heart… but I think all of these functions are easily grouped together under the word: restoration.  Sleep restores us.

    Balance is a funny concept; we try to have a work/life balance, or alone time/relationship balance. It can feel like it’s a moving target, which, when we actually hit it, just seems to change again! But there are natural templates for balance all around us, and even inside of us. 

    The sun rises and sets. Moon waxes and wanes. The seasons move in a strict order, with spring always following winter and never following… say, summer. There is an orderliness to nature that we can lean into. Nature is always making balance.

    There’s nothing inherently wrong with stress. In some sense, it’s always been with us. Life itself is an adaptation to stress. This doesn’t mean that the purpose of life is stress. Stress is simply a condition. One to which all living things must have some relationship. People pay money to go to the movies and follow a story until they become so immersed in the circumstances that they have a stress response to the action. It’s big business. So since stress is not the main problem people have, in and of itself, what is it about stress that is so detrimental to our health and happiness?

    Trees have a special resonance with humanity. When we are in a forest, something deep and ancient within us vibrates and we feel a connection to the earth, which is often overlooked in cities and built environments. There is a sense of coming home to ourselves when we are in the forest. Forests are wild and unfettered; a delicate ecosystem of mutual interdependence. They have the ability to make us see our own interconnectedness. Tonight we will call upon this connection we have to trees and harmonize with their nourishing and cleansing energy in order to relax the mind and reconnect to the world soul.
