Summary
Who knew I’d cry talking about a bathing suit on my podcast? This episode has been with me a while, since I saw that Miracle Suit in the store in April. To the young girl who thought her body needed a “miracle suit” to enjoy the pool and lay out in the sun, I see you, I love you, your body does not make you any less worthy of enjoying your life.
The miracle suit dilemma and the relationship with my body over the years has turned in to the most amazing foundation for my relationship with everything in my life. A way to tend to my own garden in unique ways. A launchpad for all of the other concepts I’d tackle and how what meaning I made about myself. The work that would quite literally change it all, yet it is never that simple. To the Miracle Suit at Macys, I’m sorry I put so much pressure on you to change my life, that was my job all along.
P.S. no shade to the actual bathing suit brand. These were not designed for my 12 year old body and never were intended to serve me… see this pic below for proof! Imagine a vibrant tween-teen trying this on desperate to fit in (in more ways than one).

In this episode I detail the differences between knowing and doing, how to bridge that gap, and that often, what defines the gap between the two is a big serving of protective resistance. This resistance and our behaviors make so much sense when we can see they serve a purpose. Many people are coming to realize they can no longer outsource their power when its time to understand inner workings or deeper layers of your behaviors. Now is the time to move through this work in a meaningful way and make different choices for how you meet yourself when you realize there is a gap between knowing what you want to do or what you know, and what you are doing or failing to do.
To illustrate this, I personally discuss how I met myself in many situations where I knew I wanted to behave differently, but wasn’t taking action. Some of these examples include my relationship with aligned eating habits and exercise even more recently my relationship with money. Sometimes we know exactly “what” to do, but can’t seem to execute. Of course there are technical problems that we need to solve sometimes, and we need help and information to do it. Other times what we actually need is an adaptive, practical solution to our perceived issues, and we can’t outsource that to Google or Chat GPT. We need a mirror, and someone to witness and guide us in that way. More importantly, we need to meet ourselves in that place in order to effect real and lasting change.
Peeling back the layers to these things will often come up in the most mundane times of our lives once we see it for what it is. You could be taking out the trash, or loading fruit into the refrigerator when that knowing hits you -
Ah HA! What I’m really doing is preventing myself from feeling at risk for failure.
Ah HA! What I’m actually doing has served me so well for years, I'm solving all the problems without regard for my personal values because I want to be known as a “good” family member, employee, friend.
Ah HA! I’ve been setting unrealistic expectations for myself because I believe in order to be liked and valued I have to outperform myself at every turn.
Ah HA! I am feeling at risk for judgement by others so I talk negatively to myself and eat more sweet snacks even though they make me feel terrible.
These are just some examples of how this can play out - in many many many ways, remember you are special, unique and how this shows up for you may not look like the above examples but I guarantee you, if you are experiencing the gap between “knowing and doing” there is something meaningful underneath it all for you to discover.
In a conversation with my dear friend, Ardas Chandra, we discussed her decision to create paid content for Substack, if you don’t know her already, she is a wonderful creative, writer, friend, mom, just so many things! We were joking about the difference between knowing what we need to do and actually doing it. She knows the basis of my work is around protective resistance and we discuss it often. The inner protectors are often running the show in our life until we learn to understand them with new eyes, and better yet, new experiences. Her recent post really made me think about some of the areas where I was holding back in my life, and where I was experiencing the gap of knowing and doing, especially around taking action toward my goals and a particularly inspiring quote by Kevin Kelly. This episode is truly special because I convinced Marc to have a fun conversation live on the podcast. We recently got a bird feeder from local shop House Finch in Collingswood, NJ. Thanks to Kara, we decided on this cute, clear, fly through feeder, which I’ve situated where my hummingbird feeder typically hangs in the summer near my office window.
We’re really lucky that our neighbors have been feeding birds forever, so we get a lot of activity in our yard as we provide a ton of natural forage in the garden and surrounding beds.
Supposedly, winter is a super special time to become a birder via bird feeding because there is lots to see. I am so glad that we decided to experiment with a feeder closer to our house to enjoy all of the fun that bird watching while on the computer and in the office has offered us.
In this episode, sparked from some fun brainstorming with Marc, we decided to share our top 5 birds. After all, Soulbloom is largely entwined in nature so this definitely fits as watching these cute birds has really made our souls bloom even in the shortest days of the year.

In this episode we sit down and chat with my friend, collaborator and naturopathic doctor, Kirsten Kessler. Kirsten is amazing and so brilliantly smart. I love knowing her and working with her professionally.
She has helped me optimize my health in a few ways, totally naturally, without stressing me out or sending me running for the hills. We discuss a little bit about this in the episode, as well as what is naturopathic medicine, how Kirsten practices and why we believe having agency in our own health choices is so critical to making lasting and sustainable changes.
Kisten and I met in our Truce Coaching Certification process and spent nearly a year together in practice coaching, learning these methods and deepening our skills together, we became fast friends.
I joke about this in the episode but Kirsten is a WIZARD at so many things, but particularly assessing bloodwork and she loves it too. I cannot recommend taking a more holistic route to your health care enough whether it is preventative, maintenance, etc. and obviously Kirsten is my top choice for someone to guide you in that way!

The mantra keeps playing in my mind. Success means nothing if you are miserable. There was a time in my life where I could easily write off misery for the fake glimmer of success. It took me a few years and a major career milestone to realize I couldn’t keep pouring all of my discontent into my career like a recycling factory and refurbish trash into something that would make me happy. The raises, the promotions, they all started to mean nothing when I realized my identity was NOT my career.
I felt lost, time wasn’t mine, I didn’t feel satisfaction in what I was doing in my day-to-day any more, and it was met with a slew of other overcommitments, lack of self-care, and a numb, barely there presence in my life. My creativity took a back seat to everything else, yet I still masked and acted like everything on the inside was great.
From the outside, you wouldn’t be able to tell everything on the inside was shaky. My relationship with my husband was great, we have the cutest dogs ever, my house looked well-kept, I even dressed nice and felt put together. Inside my inner landscape was dismal, bleak and I had little hope things could change, but I kept on keeping on. How could I be so unhappy when my life was what people dream of?
It doesn’t matter if your life is someone else’s dream life if you are miserable in one or more aspects. For me, it was my career and my lack of boundaries with my time and energy that did me in. The lack of boundaries really crept in and never let me truly know when enough was enough. I was always striving for more, especially at work, and I had to be the best. I outperformed myself each year because that was who I was. I was known for this. How could I let them down?
I realized I was repeating many of the things that likely led to my mom’s early death. It hurt, it stung, I felt stupid. How could I be so blind to this? I felt all aspects of grief for this version of myself. She still exists, I have liberated many parts of her, but it’s a deep unraveling. I continue to do the inner work to not fall victim to this trap that I learned to set so easily.
What is it for you that comes after this statement? Success means nothing if ____. I encourage you to fill in the blank. Sit with the other questions at the end of the episode and really be real with yourself.
The time to examine this is now. There is no time for “one day when”.

People always ask me “How do you do it all?” and most days I feel that imposter syndrome creep in, like I am not doing nearly enough.
***But then I remember I am not meant to do it all, but I am being, and I happen to also get a lot done at the same time.***

It is true that sometimes people are acting in a way that isn't for your highest and best, but often we have a lot more control about how we show up, what energy we give, and how to navigate these situations when they occur.

In this episode I tell a story about how my mom once thought garden beds were better off with the "less is more" approach until one spring she spread 6 packets of zinnias in a quite small space. The result was a head turning swath of zinnias, blooming and blooming again and again. It even attracted hummingbirds. It was the talk of the town, in the best way possible. My mom didn't always have the luxury of being creative or expressing herself in creative ways, she was a sole provider for our family and so many others in our lives. Her garden was a source of so much pride and fulfillment for her. When I am feeling off, distant or overwhelmed, I think about when the last time I was able to be creative was? I am up to a quite high standard now of almost daily creativity and expression. It is really hard for me to ignore this side of me. I feel like my creative expression is true abundance.
