Tomas Osinski, artist, architect, and industrial designer joins us to discuss the Invisible House in Joshua Tree, a 5500 square foot, 4 bed and 4 bath privately owned home that is available for rent for filming, photography, intimate events, and larger outdoor experiences.
The home is designed as one long, continuous, narrow space with a 100-foot-long interior pool as its centerpiece. Intended to appear as it has lightly landed in this moonscape, minimally disturbing the site, the structure is built on a series of reinforced concrete pillars and appears to float. The name Invisible House comes from the mirrored tempered glass that wraps the entire façade and reflects the surrounding environment, almost disappearing amongst the desert rocks and shrubs.
We discuss several aspects of the design in this episode – the inspiration, process, design considerations for the high desert environment, and hidden elements like structural, mechanical, and utilities for the home, and much more!

Founded in 2007, Southern Girl Desserts is co-owned by Catarah Coleman and Shoneji Robison, who combined their family recipes to create a Southern cupcake and dessert arsenal. Most recipes are family-inspired, but plenty flavor combinations are dreamed up by the Dessert Divas themselves. Coleman and Robison received national recognition when they competed on and won Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” The women were bestowed with a $10,000 prize and the opportunity to cater the Chicago Toy and Game Fair, a black-tie gala. The women are also featured for their celebrity dessert catering on E! Networks’s “L.A. Sugar," and recently introduced nationwide shipping.

In today’s episode we explore the evolution and design of Libraries with Maria Lopez Calleja, architect and Senior Associate at MVRDV. As a design team leader for the firm, Maria will provide unique insight as we also highlight the Tianjin Binhai Library in Tianjin, China, designed by MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute. Maria discusses inspirations for design, the design process, we touch on a unique criticism of the design, and dig into design concept vs. reality. If you’re not familiar with the building by name, I’m confident you’ve seen photos of it somewhere. The Tianjin library is a somewhat futuristic, yet organic, almost hollowed out space that is wrapped by terraced bookshelves which echo the form of a sphere at the center and create an interior, topographical, landscape whose contours reach out and wrap around the building.
