  • In the pursuit of who the worst team in NHL history was, we take a look at the 1943-1944 New York Rangers. A 6 win season was the result of a series of circumstances far outside of their control. Yet through this season the Rangers served as a common denominator among the careers of some of the NHL's greatest players, award winners, military serviceman and the Second World War. This episode aims to prove that while the team was wildly fascinating, the Rangers were victim to a series of influences that made their season the worst in NHL history and set the team and franchise up to not achieve their main goal for decades, winning.

  • On this episode of Storytime Hockey I talk about how I discovered the name Anders Hedberg and do a deep dive into his 1976-77 season. Hedberg became the first player to break Maurice Richard's goal scoring record, but it wasn't an isolated moment. Listen to find out how a rejected NHL owner want to be, the wild west of the WHA and Bobby Hull wanting a boat load of cash created a perfect storm for the WHA to be taken over by a Swedish speedster named Anders Hedberg.

  • Russian hockey players make up an important part of our hockey culture. They've contributed both to the modern game with players like Alex Ovechkin but also in the development of professional full time hockey players through their hockey programs and leagues based in Russia or the former USSR. The best players though, they always ended up in the NHL. For some of them, it wasn't as easy as just hopping on a plane and coming west. On this episode we talk about the Russia, the invasion of Ukraine the defections of Alexander Mogilny, Sergei Fedorov and Evgeni Malkin and what their experiences might mean for the future of players such as Matvey Michkov.

  • Way back in 1905 hockey was just finding its roots as an organized sport in rural Canada. It was in a small town near Ottawa that the first fatality, death or murder occured. Alcide Laurin was the first recorded player to be killed during an organized game of hockey. His death at the hands of Allan Loney wasn't just an accident or a moment of violence in hockey. It moved to a murder and manslaughter charge and brought the entirety of hockey in Canada into the court room. Hockey was literally on trial. Listen to the episode to find out what happened on the ice, what happened in the court room and how the events on the ice that day represented a shifting Canadian society.

  • The California Golden Seals were an outright oddity in the chapters of the NHL. From cooperalls to names on the back of jerseys and even an actual seal on the ice, the franchise left an incredible mark on the league before they relocated in 1976. Despite their failiures hockey would go on to flourish in the state with a modern day 3 teams and multiple Stanley Cup wins.
Perhaps the Golden Seals would have had a different story to tell had they not traded away their 1971 First Overall Draft Pick. Listen for the story of how the Canadiens GM Sam Pollock worked his magic to earn the right to pick the legendary Guy Lafleur.

  • On this episode of Storytime Hockey, we dive into one of the other NHL teams that graced the ice in Montreal. Despite being cross town rivals against the Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers represented the English population of Montreal. Who were they, and how did they end up in the NHL? Most importantly, why did they only play four NHL games before disappearing from the league?

Our player spotlight falls on Joe Malone, a player of a higher quality than we are used to covering, but one that holds a unique hockey story and an even more unique hockey record.

  • On this episode of Storytime Hockey we take a look at our favorite Dryden to ever play in the NHL, Dave. This one player was connected to so many different interesting storylines, from rival hockey leagues to emergency back up goaltending to a first for brothers in the league and the invention of modern goalie masks.

Then we take a look at Joel Lundqvist, who played three years in the NHL but has carved out an excellent career in Sweden. We discuss why he returned to Sweden and mention his twin brother a few times.

  • On this episode of Storytime Hockey, I take a look at the playing career of Herb Carnegie, one of the best players of his time, but he never made the NHL because of the colour of his skin. He went on to be one of the most dominant players in Canada, influencing the next generation of hockey players. I discuss his career after hockey and how he continued to influence the world of hockey and make a case for him to be included in the Hockey Hall of Fame. #CarnegieforHHOF

In our player profile we look at the playing career of Tony McKegney, whose entry into professional hockey placed him right in the middle of a racially charged 1970's Birmingham, Alabama.

  • On this episode of Storytime Hockey, we look at the history of one of the most iconic pieces of hockey equipment and symbols of the sport - the hockey stick. Specifically, we look at the changes that the stick has gone too leading up to the curved blade. How did the curved blade come to be? Who was the first player to play with it? And how has the league tried to put rules in place to manage it, while players try to cheat the system. In our player profile, we look at Dave McLlwain, his amazing junior hockey career and how his 1991-1992 set a record that no one really wants to be a part of.

  • On this episode of Storytime Hockey, we look at the history of the NHL Entry Draft and how the first overall pick has only been traded three times. Why did teams trade away such a valuable pick, and how did it turn out for them in the long run? In our player profile, we look at Carolina Hurricanes Senior VP of Hockey Operation Rick Dudley, his NHL and NLL playing career and how he might be the most interesting man in hockey, but also, a Batman villain.

  • On this episode of @StorytimeHockey , we look at how Dave Schultz was able to set the record for the most penalty minutes in a single season. There's no way a team would allow a player to go out and collect so many penalties on their own. How was it that the Flyers were ok with this, and did it help them win? In the player profile we look at the first German born NHL player Walt Tkaczuk and try to figure out why he turned down a chance to play in one of the biggest hockey stages of all time.

  • On our first episode, we dive into the life of Frank Calder and how he helped launch the NHL. Who was Frank Calder? Where did he come from? What was he thinking starting a league during the First World War? And why is there a trophy named after him? We also talk about how we remember the man, and does the official memory of the man really match up to his accomplishments?

After that, we jump into the career of Mike Sillinger, the 'suitcase' of the NHL. How does a player with only 548 points hold an NHL record?
