In this inspiring episode, Jo Bradshaw reflects on the power of kindness, both to others and to oneself, and how it shapes our personal and professional lives. Jo shares her journey from feeling disconnected in school to becoming a guide who empowers others to climb their own “Everests.” She emphasizes the importance of making conscious choices, building habits, and giving people the agency to succeed. Key Themes: Kindness as a Choice Jo talks about kindness as a deliberate action, extending to interactions with both people and animals. She highlights how empathy and connection are central to this practice. A student’s reflection on attitude and choice reaffirmed her belief that kindness is a habit—one that requires regular practice, like any other. Kindness in Leadership In her work with students and as an expedition guide, Jo underscores the significance of kindness in leadership. Her aim is not to be remembered for getting clients to the summit, but for empowering them to reach their goals independently, with her support providing them with the tools and agency to succeed. Overcoming Past Challenges Jo reflects on her past experiences of bullying and how she overcame defensive, reactive behaviours. She encourages listeners not to let their past define them, urging them to surround themselves with positive influences and to move forward as victors, not victims. Self-Kindness and Self-Talk Jo discusses her journey towards self-kindness, focusing on reframing her inner dialogue. Just as she encourages and supports others, she realised the importance of offering herself that same level of compassion. She believes that self-kindness is foundational; without it, it’s difficult to fully extend kindness to others. The Power of Champions Jo highlights the crucial role a “champion” played in her life—someone who believed in her and motivated her to stop making excuses. Now, she strives to be that champion for others, inspiring them to take the first step towards achieving their ambitions, whether in mountaineering or life. Resources: Website -

Dive into Corin Bell's inspiring journey! In this episode, we explore her path from studying Politics and Philosophy in Stockport to tackling food sustainability through her innovative catering business. Corin shares insights on food waste, community impact, and her mission for fairness in food systems. Tune in to discover how she’s driving change for a more sustainable future! Corin Bell's Background Corin grew up in Stockport before moving to Manchester for university, where she studied Politics and Philosophy. This academic path was driven by her interest in understanding how systems work. As the first in her family to attend university, she felt nervous but ultimately valued the freedom and opportunities her experience provided, despite studying a subject she considered vocationally useless. Career Journey After university, Corin worked in the public sector, primarily with Manchester City Council, focusing on homelessness and environmental projects. However, she left her job following significant budget cuts after the 2010 election, which greatly affected local authority funding. Exploration of Food Systems Corin's transition into food-related projects stemmed from personal interest rather than a specific career plan. Her work has involved addressing food poverty and sustainability, ultimately leading her to explore the interconnectedness of food systems. Real Junk Food Project Inspired by the Real Junk Food Project in Leeds, Corin and friends launched a similar initiative in Manchester in 2015, aiming to utilise surplus food. They began with pop-up supper clubs offering meals on a pay-as-you-feel basis, though they soon encountered challenges. Challenges with the Pay-as-You-Feel Model Corin highlighted the complexities of the pay-as-you-feel model, including inconsistent income and sustainability issues. To stabilise finances, the decision was made to shift to a catering business with set prices while still supporting community initiatives. Current Work Today, Corin runs a catering business that prioritises reducing food waste and using locally sourced, sustainably produced ingredients. This venture supports community initiatives by providing meals and grocery parcels to those in need, including refugees and low-income families. The catering business, including a café and bar at the People’s History Museum, aims to balance commercial activities with community support, demonstrating viable solutions to food system problems while ensuring stable employment for staff. Food Waste Issues Corin emphasised that food waste often occurs not due to spoilage but because it's economically unfeasible to keep surplus food. Businesses may find it cheaper to dispose of excess than to sell it, especially when the food is still edible. Additionally, significant waste happens pre-farm gate, as many farmers opt not to harvest produce that won't sell, contributing to nutritional waste. Retailers often prefer produce with longer shelf lives, leading to the discarding of fresh items that are perfectly ripe but can't be guaranteed to sell. Corin also noted that best before dates are often arbitrary, citing examples like Himalayan sea salt, which can last indefinitely. Community-Centric Business Corin believes in the importance of local businesses over scaling for growth, as local enterprises keep wealth within the community and promote sustainability. She advocates for replicating successful models instead of aggressive expansion to maintain community ties and reduce waste while fostering local entrepreneurship. Consumer Behaviour and Happiness The discussion highlighted the modern consumer culture's focus on constant consumption, which can lead to dissatisfaction. Corin emphasised the need for individuals to find ways to contribute to society meaningfully, especially as younger generations often feel disconnected. She pointed out that true happiness and fulfilment come from personal satisfaction rather than the relentless pursuit of growth or profit. Philosophy and Values Corin underscores the significance of having a philosophical foundation and strong values. Without this grounding, individuals risk becoming mindless consumers, lacking depth and perspective. She calls for systemic change, emphasising that current systems are not designed to support individual happiness and collective well-being. Social Media and Communication Corin discussed the challenges of communication in a visually dominated world, expressing a preference for deeper discussions over memes and quick visuals. Sustainable Living and Political Reform Passionate about sustainable food practices, Corin believes in the need for a fair society and the necessity of shifting agricultural policies towards sustainability, such as reducing red meat consumption. She critiques the government's inability to enact these changes due to political unpopularity, advocating for proportional representation and values-based governance. Balance of Love and Hard Work Corin recognises that success comes from a blend of love and hard work. She acknowledges that unexpected opportunities can alter one's career path. Resources for Learning To promote sustainable living, Corin recommends resources like ethicalconsumer.org for consumers interested in making informed choices. She also suggests staying updated through organisations like Sustain, which advocate for sustainable food systems and policies. Definition of Inspiration For Corin, inspiration is about "lighting a fire," creating energy and motivation within oneself. Looking to the future, she aspires to foster fairness and accountability in the world, advocating for corporate responsibility and empowerment for those who have faced adversity. Resources:

In this bite-sized episode, Corin Bell, founder and Executive Director of Open Kitchen, shares her journey from public sector work to establishing a sustainable, not-for-profit business. Corin explores the significance of sustainability, not just environmentally, but also in financial and social terms. She addresses the guilt often associated with profit in community projects and advocates for taking action over criticism when tackling sustainability challenges. Corin believes that small, thoughtful actions are crucial for reversing the negative impacts of past decisions, encouraging everyone to contribute to the change. Key Takeaways: Three Parts of Sustainability: Corin emphasises that true sustainability encompasses financial, environmental, and social dimensions. For a business to be genuinely sustainable, it must be financially self-sufficient, minimise environmental harm, and provide positive outcomes for people and the community. Profit in Community Projects: Many community projects experience guilt around making a profit, but Corin insists that profit can be a force for good when reinvested in people and the planet. Importance of Local Actions: Corin highlights the importance of practical, local actions like community growing projects, which not only improve access to healthy food but also address issues such as social isolation, biodiversity, and air quality. Action Over Research: After years of studies and reports, Corin believes it's time for more action. Real change will come from people actively implementing solutions in their communities. Topics Discussed: The evolving role of social enterprises Sustainability beyond just environmental concerns Balancing profit and purpose in community projects How small actions can lead to big changes in sustainability Challenges in the food industry and community initiatives The need for practical action instead of endless research If you’re inspired by Corin’s story, consider getting involved in local sustainability projects or starting your own initiatives. “When you stop using the word can’t and start using the word can, you’ll soon realise that the person you thought you were is no match for the one that you really are.” In this episode of Tales to Inspire, Steve Hill shares his incredible journey from teaching to tackling some of the world's toughest challenges. Born and raised in Oldham, Steve has spent 28 years teaching, believing it to be the greatest privilege to inspire young minds. Steve’s path changed after an unsatisfying stint as a quantity surveyor. His mother’s advice to take action led him to try teaching, where he discovered his passion for guiding students through growth and teamwork. A moment of introspection 15 years ago led Steve to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, showing his students that he lived by the inspirational quotes in his classroom. This adventure was the first of many, including Mount Blanc, the Sahara Desert, the Arctic, and the Amazon jungle ultra-marathon. Each year, his students followed his journeys, learning about resilience and determination. Steve’s challenges also supported various charities, nominated by his students. A memorable experience in Uganda, where a young boy shared his ice cream with Steve during a marathon, inspired him to establish the Team Hill Charitable Trust. The charity supports schools and clinics in Uganda and children and families in northwest England. During the lockdown, Steve wrote a book about his adventures, which captivated his students and further solidified his role as an inspirational figure. As he transitions from teaching, Steve aims to inspire thousands more through his charity, showing children that with hard work and big dreams, they can overcome any obstacle. Tune in to hear Steve Hill’s journey, filled with adventure and the belief that when you start using the word “can,” you’ll discover a new version of yourself.
