Black holes come in many sizes. Small, medium, large & extra large. The size of a black hole mostly depends on how massive the star was before it ran out of fuel, exploded as a supernova and collapsed under its own extreme gravity. The more massive the black hole, the stronger and larger its effect on the fabric of space and time.
Here’s the new bit! In a recent study, astronomers found that even tiny black holes have immense power to shape their part of the galaxy. Far more than previously thought. Black holes can rip apart a star that comes too close by. Even the tiniest black holes, known as stellar-mass black holes can do this.

- To discover what would happen if an asteroid were to strike a large body of water, Dr. Galen Gisler led a team of scientists who used high performance computing facilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory to calculate and visualize a 3-D model of an asteroid entering the Earth's atmosphere over one of the world's oceans. These efforts won them the Best Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase award at Supercomputing 2016. Reality is that what happens depends upon the mass, size, speed, angle of approach, and composition of the impacting object. Galen's group of scientists documented the hunch that since an asteroid strikes the water at a single point, it only effects the immediate region around the impact point, whereas to create a tsunami, you need something like an under water landslide which disturbs an entire water column from the ocean floor to the surface.
- The ALMA radio telescope located in the Atacama desert of northern Chile is able to see the faint millimeter wave length glow emitted by gas molecules and dust particles in the disk of material surrounding the very young star named HD 163296. This solar system in formation is located about 400 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. HD 162396's age compared to our Sun is like that of a 3 day old human baby compared to a 65 year old adult.

Today Historical Astronomy Division, https://had.aas.org/, honors the late Dr. Edward C Stone with an episode of remembrances by his colleagues, friends, & family. Among his career achievements, he led NASA’s Voyager planetary-to-interstellar mission for 50 years as Project Scientist, from concept in 1972 through his retirement in 2022. Dr. Edward C Stone who passed away one year ago this month on June 9, 2024. During his 60-year career with JPL-Caltech (that included 10 years as JPL Director) Dr. Stone steered NASA’s Voyager planetary-to-interstellar mission for 50 years as Project Scientist, from concept in 1972 through his retirement in 2022. He “was known for his steady leadership, consensus building, and enthusiasm for engaging the public in science. He left a deep impact on the space community.”

We’re here to share stories from and about the people who study the stars, planets, and the cosmos. Dear Cheap Astronomy – have we got any spacecraft on the other side of the Sun?
Well, yes and no. Nearly all our spacecraft orbit the Sun – since they are either orbiting Earth or another planet or are touring the asteroid belt – and hence they’ve all been around the back of the Sun at one time another. The only spacecraft we don’t have orbiting the Sun are the ones on their way out of the Solar System – the Pioneers, the Voyagers and New Horizons, which have sufficient escape velocities to leave solar orbit.
Dear Cheap Astronomy – Hubble crisis
So there’s a crisis in cosmology apparently. Although, in most respects it’s just business as usual really. There aren’t many scientists who are overwhelmed by existential angst when they suddenly realize they don’t know everything. The crisis first started being talked around 2014 as it became apparent there consistent discrepancies in measurements of the Hubble constant, which is a measurement of how fast the Universe is expanding.

The planet is HD 209458 b, and nicknamed "Osiris" after the Egyptian god of the underworld. Osiris is a fitting nickname for this planet, as it is a very hot and hostile world. HD 209458 b orbits its star very closely, and its surface temperature is estimated to be around 1,000 degrees Celsius. This makes it too hot for liquid water to exist on its surface, and it is unlikely to be habitable. Even so, this planet is remarkable in many ways. It occupies first place in a long list of discovery milestones.

- Protection against a comet strike is worth considering. Every year, if we are lucky, several comets can come close enough for the Sun to warm and us to see the beautiful changing dust and gas clouds around them with binoculars or our unaided eyes. So far asteroids have gotten most of the attention as dangerous celestial neighbors, however, Dr. Joseph Nuth, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland recently pointed out "Comets can also deliver a heaping helping of calamity to Earth, and scientists and policymakers alike should start taking measures to combat the threat".
- Collect your own beautiful micro-meteorite sample.
It is estimated that several hundred thousand pounds of left over particles from the formation of our solar system enters the Earth's atmosphere every day with perhaps 10% of the of the total reaching the surface of our home planet. The individual grains of cosmic dust or micro-meteorites as they are also called range in size from the diameter of a human hair to twice the thickness of a dime.

He was also an International Committee Member of the Dark Sky International, regularly organizing public lectures at the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Hong Kong Science Museum. He was also the author of a popular science book “Decoding the Starry Night: A Guide to Stargazing and Astrophotography”.
