María and Alyssa explain how international conferences work, what the atmosphere is like, what they got out of the experience and how they navigated the application process. This month the Bulletin Podcast Team interviews Dr Atif Butt. Dr Atif is the Chief of the Public Advocacy and Communication Section of UN Environment based in Nairobi, Kenya and has a wealth of knowledge to help current policy students achieve their professional goals. We interview Dr Atif to get some insights about what policy students, particularly international students should be keeping in mind and what they should be doing to give them the best chance at achieving their personal professional goals. With Dr Atif's extensive international professional experience he provides sound and practical tips that cover finding internships, adjusting to new countries, language difficulties, networking and securing a job post graduation.

Dr. Maria Cecilia Oliveira head of the transdisciplinary research group "Democratic Governance and Ecopolitical Transformations" (EcoPol) at IASS Potsdam. She is currently working with the EcoPol group on a transdisciplinary case study in the Amazon Basin. At the Willy Brandt School, she is an instructor for the course "Environmental Conflict & Conflict Resolution".

This month we had a discussion with Dr. Hasnain Bokhari on the new EU Digital Service Act. We discuss the implications of the Act for tech companies and users in an international context, including taking policy steps for preserving the rights of the user regarding data protection as well as seeing the Act as a tool to safeguard democracies.
Dr. Hasnain Bokhari is a Research Associate and Faculty member at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy, specializing in Digitalization, e-Governance, and ICT4D. In this episode, we talk to Professor Dr. Achim Kemmerling about how mega-events can shine a spotlight on labor violations, what sort of leverage exists to curtail labor violations and why authoritarian countries seem so keen to host renowned international events.
Professor Dr. Achim Kemmerling is the Gerhard Haniel Chair of Public Policy and International Development and currently the director of Willy Brandt School of Public Policy, University of Erfurt. Before coming to the Willy Brandt School, Achim Kemmerling worked as a Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Public Policy, Central European University Budapest teaching courses on methodology, public policy and development. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin, and an M.A. in International Political Economy from Warwick University. This episode was hosted by Smriti Rai and Noor Alam with an introduction by Guilherme Deganello.

Venezuela has been rocked by some of the worst crises in its history in recent years. These crises have sparked one of the largest migration crises of the 21st century. However, unlike other migrations, there is no one single event that the migration can be attributed to, making it a complex migration crisis to fully comprehend
What are the roots of this crisis and what is happening to the Venezuelans that are migrating? We are glad to have Dr. Pau Palop-Garcia, a Research Fellow at the Willy Brandt School and Eva Serrano with us.
Dr. Pau Palop-Garcia holds a PhD in Political Sciences from the Free University of Berlin (2019). He specializes in the study of migration policies and the political representation of migrant communities. He has published widely about these topics in journals such as Democratization, Citizenship Studies, Comparative Migration Studies, Citizenship Studies, and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.
Eva Serrano recently completed her Master's at the Willy Brandt School, writing her thesis on the Colombian response to the Venezuelan crisis. She is currently beginning her career advocating for migrants and working to help migrants integrate into German life.

The German Supply Chain Due Diligence Law was enacted by the German Bundestag on 11 June 2021, and will come into force from 1 January 2023. This represents the first time that the responsibility of German companies to respect human rights and environmental obligations in global supply chains has been given a legal foundation. Starting from 1 January 2023, companies with at least 3,000 employees will be covered.
While it is a big step forward, why do some still find the law controversial? How would the law impact Global South countries on the supply chain? We are glad to have Karina Marzano, a PhD Candidate of Willy Brandt School with us.
Karina Marzano has been researching Private Environmental Governance and the Global South under the supervision of Professor Andreas Goldthau. She shares her insight and analysis on the newly passed German Supply Chain Due Diligence Law.

In this episode, we invited Bakhtiyor Tukhtabaev, a Brandt School alum to discuss the wild year in finance and economics.
Inflation, crypto, meme stocks. 2021 has been a weird year. To kick off Season 2 of the Bulletin Podcast, Jesus and Caroline are joined by Bakhtiyor Tukhtabaev to recap what happened with the GameStop stock (GME). They ask, ‘are markets rational? If markets aren’t rational, what are they?’ Then, with Bakhtiyor serving as their guide, the team looks at cryptocurrency and instability in markets and asks, ‘how can policy prevent instability in markets?’
Bakhtiyor Tukhtabaev has spent a decade working in both the public sector and the financial services industry. In his current role as Senior Business Analyst, he analyzes EU regulations and works to implement them into business processes.
