In this episode I chat with Desi about their experiences growing up in Freedom Fire Ministries. Desi describes life inside the high-control group with a matriarchal, authoritarian leader. Though leaving would mean strained contact with parents, and family members relocating to other parts of the country, Desi has managed to carve out an independent life and speak eloquently and introspectively about their time within Freedom Fire Ministries. Oh! and there is also a segment about the notorious "Cat Cult" Eva's Eden - a nonprofit cat rescue organisation fronted by the same leader!

Nirvana was on call with me from the garden area of a psychiatric hospital that her child has been admitted to, following the fallout of their involvement with online guru and alleged cult leader Liana Shanti. During our conversation, Nirvana offers some insight into making impossible decisions in impossible situations and how she navigated a situation that was meticulously designed to isolate her child from her family, widen the divide between loved ones and strengthen allegiances to the leader all at the same time. I hope any loved ones with people inside destructive and toxic groups can take strength from Nirvana's story and know that you are not alone.Thank you Nirvana.

In this miniseries I talk with Micah Losh, author of the recently published memoir Mentally Diseased. During Micah's childhood in the Jehovah's Witnesses, he lost his father. This eternal spiritual relationship was then held hostage, with Micah being told that the only way to be reunited is to fully submit to the teachings of the Watchtower Organisation. Slipping into a deep depression, Micah received little to no support, and was actually blamed instead for his suffering, told it was his reluctance to conform to the JW's fully that caused this ill-mental health. This is Micah's troubling journey through a toxic religious group that almost claimed Micah's life. TW - talk of suicide.
