Anyway, this time out I am very proud to present an interview with writer Ron Marz to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Kyle Rayner version of Green Lantern. Ron tells us how he got the writing gig, how much of a time crunch he was under for the first few issues, when he found out about Hal being the big bad of Zero Hour, how he viewed the relationship between Kyle and Hal, as well as the dynamic Kyle had with the Wally West Flash and what it was like working on the DC vs. Marvel event.
Ron and I also discuss how the death of Alex in the early part of his series has become the poster child for women getting killed to further the story of the male protagonist. I have to admit I didn't know how Ron was going to react to the question, but his answer was very thoughtful and one of the highlights of the interview for me.
We also touch on the Zero Hour 30th Anniversary Special that is coming out the same day that this episode is dropping!
I wanted to once again thank Ron for being so generous with his time and being a really fun interview.

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!
This time out Andy and Mike take a look at a pair of Batman Elseworlds stories! Elseworlds is back as an imprint and the guys thought it would be fun to look at two of those stories that have flown under the radar. First up is the 2001 Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips special called Batman: Gotham Noir.
Andy and Mike will now allow you, dear reader/listener, a moment to get over the shock that Andy chose an Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips comic book to talk about. It is a surprise and the guys realize you might need some time to process this information.

Are we good?
Batman: Gotham Noir is a period piece with Jim Gordon taking center stage as a hard boiled private investigator hired to protect someone and then having to figure out why his charge was murdered. This is a fairly non-spoilery discussion as Andy wants people to read this one shot, but there's still a lot to be said about the book.
Then they look at Mike's pick, which was Batman: Master of the Future. This special was the direct sequel to Batman: Gotham By Gaslight and has that version of Batman fighting against the Master of the Future and this one has it all. Bare knuckled fighting! Swashbuckling action! Political intrigue! Romance! Dirigibles! It was steampunk before steampunk became a thing in popular culture!
Plus...Andy talks about the then recent purchase of the novelization to Batman The Movie from 1966 leading to a short conversation on Batman in prose form.

Welcome to the two hundredth and seventieth episode of From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years: A Superman and Lois Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.
The nuptials are out of the way, so it's time for Mike and Jeff to talk about Lois and Clark's honeymoon! Things start out normal enough...at least normal for Lois and Clark...with the reception followed by a trip to Hawaii in Adventures of Superman #541. Then a supposed monster starts tearing up the place and Superboy shows up and Lois lies but doesn't lie about being a member of the Special Crimes Unit. Things really go pear shaped when Clark is shot at the end of the issue and kidnapped, leaving an angry Lois behind to save the day. Then, in Action Comics #728, Clark finds that his kidnapper is none other than Mister Naga, brother to the man Lois caused to be locked up in the wedding album. It seems that Lois has something that Naga wants back. Clark thinks back to a time when he was in a similar situation as Superman, which allows the creative teams to actually have a costumed Superman with powers show up during this storyline. Finally, in Superman: The Man of Steel #63 it's Lois to the rescue as the honeymoon comes to an action packed and explosive end!

That’s right. Now that Mike and Jeff have reached the actual, factual wedding (and now that the official feed for the show is changing) they felt that a change in title was in order. The show hasn’t really changed. In fact, the numbering is the same, but something had to be done to mark that this momentous occasion has happened. This podcast still has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Finally…Lois and Clark get hitched!
Well, not right away. First Mike and Jeff have to talk about Superman #118, which is the issue right before the wedding. Lois Lane is in on the trail of a drug dealer and meets someone that takes her on a quest that leads her to realize that maybe she still has feelings for Clark. Meanwhile, Superman still doesn’t have any powers and does some tests to see why that is. During the test Superman gets a pep talk from Wonder Woman. Then, in Superman: The Wedding Album #1, the very first Triangle Era Special, Lois and Clark reunite and after a tense conversation the engagement is back on and it’s all about planning the ceremony. It’s an all-star effort on the creative side and the boys cover the bachelor party, the bridal dinner, Lois picking out her dress, the search for a new apartment, the rehearsal dinner, Sam Lane acting like a jerk, and then…FINALLY…the wedding ceremony itself.
After that, Mike and Jeff discuss the third episode of season four of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman titled Swear to God, This Time We’re Not Kidding. It’s the television wedding of Lois and Clark and the coverage of this one is much more positive than the last episodes of Lois and Clark. The boys even go easy on the “villain” of the episode.

Back on June 13, 2007 the first episode of Views From The Longbox was loosed upon an unsuspecting world.
Now, 17 years later, I'm releasing episode 277, which, if you add up all of the specials and point whatever episodes and the side shows, is the 300th episode of Views.
And I wanted to go big.
So, last year Shag, one of my best friends and long time semi-regular co-host, and I sat down to record a follow up to our episode on the DC Cosmic Cards trading card series by looking at the DC Cosmic Teams Cards. And we had a ball doing it. Not only did we give each other good natured hard times throughout the episode, but we also got to dive into what is essentially a time capsule for DC Comics circa 1992/1993. We talk about L.E.G.I.O.N., the Justice Leagues that existed at the time, Superman's foes, the New Titans, the Team Titans, the Justice Society of America and so much more. We even cover the holograms. It was a lot of fun.

Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-eighth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.
This time out Mike and Jeff look at the Superman related books that came out with a November 1996 cover date that weren't part of the Final Night event. Those books include Superman: The Man of Steel Annual #5, Superboy and the Ravers #3, Showcase '96 #10, Steel #32, and Justice League: A Midsummers Nightmare #3. After that they look at the first seven (or five, depending on how you want to look at it) episodes of Superman: The Animated Series, which premiered in September of 1996. Episodes discussed are The Last Son of Krypton Parts 1 thru 3, Fun and Games, A Little Piece of Home, Feeding Time, and The Way of All Flesh. For grins, they end their animated talk by chatting about the first issue of the tie-in comics Superman Adventures. Finally, they discuss Lord of the Flys and Battleground Earth, which are the first two episodes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Season 4.
Mike would like to take this opportunity to apologize to those listeners that like or love the two episodes of Lois and Clark discussed in this episode. He did not like them and he was not shy about expressing this opinion.

After a brief introduction where Andy and Mike blame each other for life decisions they dig into Batman #181, which was the first appearance of Poison Ivy. Seriously. He's in like one panel. It's barely an appearance.

Welcome back to Views From The Longbox! This time out I welcome back my good friend (best mate, one might say) Andrew Leyland to talk comics.
Which comics?
Well, we don't focus on one particular comic or storyline. It's more of a State of the Union type conversation where Andy and I talk about where we are as comic book fans at the moment. It's a pulse check of a sorts and we dig into a number of subjects and answer the hard questions. Are comics dying? (No, they aren't.) Are comic book films and television series dying? (No, but they aren't as good as they used to be.) What are we reading right now? (Comics we like.)
Okay, it seems like I answered those questions, but listen to the episode anyway, because the answers are more nuanced than what I wrote above. Andy and I also go on some tangents, mostly about Superman and Lois, but we try to talk about where we are as comic book fans and readers without sounding like old men yelling at clouds and I think we were 96% successful on that.
Andy hosts or co-hosts a few shows that you should be listening to. Hey, Kids Comics, 2 is out there, which Andy co-hosts with his son Micheal. Then there's The Palace of Glittering Delights, which is his "whatever Andy feels like talking about" show that is just a joy to listen to.

In this installment, which was part of the Superman at 75: The Celebration of a Legend series I did in 2013, Andy and I talk about how Superman's origin evolved from his first appearance up to the 1970's. For this first episode I'm going back to Views From The Longbox Episode 15, originally released on January 1, 2013. That episode kicked off my Superman at 75: The Celebration of a Legend series that was centered on celebrating Superman's...75th birthday. It's right there in the title. In the first installment, titled 7 Ways Mike Defends Superman, I recorded an hour long reply to a cracked article titled 7 Ways Batman is Objectively Better Than Superman. That article got under my skin a little over a decade ago and I felt that I needed to respond.
Did I really need to do that? Not really, but it made for a solid way to beging a podcast series.

Welcome to the second episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two, the pretty much the same, not really all that new reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. I am your host, Michael Bailey, and this time out I am finishing my two part series celebrating Superman’s 85th anniversary because…I really want to.
It’s just that simple.
In this installment I look at how Superman's birthday has been celebrated over the decades and how big and small those celebrations have been. The bulk of this section is spent on the 50th anniversary, but that's because his 50th was probably the biggest birthday the character has had judging by the sheer amount of...stuff that happened in and around 1988. I also talk about the barebones celebration from 1968, the almost non-existant celebration from 1998 and how the anniversaries ramped up for 2013 and 2018. After that I talk about the Superman comics and television series that came out in 2023 and what I thought of them.
(Note, during the first segment I state that the Lex Luthor and Brainiac makeovers went down in Action Comics #543. This is wrong. It was Action Comics #544. I totally kept blowing that one over and over again. My bad.)

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!
It's Christmas time, so Andy and Mike thought it would be fun to look at not one but two Yuletide themed Batman stories. Or, at the very least, two stories that take place at Christmas. First up is Brave and the Bold #184, where the Huntress of Earth-2 crosses over to Earth-1 to spend the holidays with her Uncle Bruce and ends up helping Bruce through a crisis of faith when it comes to light that Thomas Wayne might have been a criminal!
Spoiler warning...he wasn't.
Then they look at a story from DC Special Series #21, which featured early Batman work from Frank Miller. Batman is investigating some criminal activity and ends up having to save an ex-con who has had a change of heart because of his job as a department store Santa. There's also something about a star that was a running theme through that special. Mike also nearly ends the show when Andy makes a comment about All-Star Batman and Robin.

Welcome to the first episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two, the pretty much the same, not really all that new reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. I am your host, Michael Bailey, and this time out I am starting a two part series celebrating Superman's 85th anniversary because...I really want to.
It's just that simple.
For this first installment I do an off the cuff solo episode where I talk about six of the sub-anniversaries happening during Superman's 85th. Superman The Movie, Superman III, the Ruby Spear Superman animated series, the live action Superboy series, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Man of Steel all have big anniversaries this year and I thought it would be fun to go through them all in one shot instead of devoting specific episodes to them for...reasons. Various reasons. Reasons I go through during the episode itself.
I mentioned during the episode that I had done a commentary for Superman The Movie back in 2013. That was on episode 153 of Views From The Longbox, which I don't have a handy link to...sadly...because the post with the show notes for that episode no longer exists. Views is readily available on just about all podcatching services, so it should be easy to find.

Written by Chuck Dixon with art by Graham Nolan and Scott Hanna this story explores what happens when the Joker is finally put on trial for his crimes. The problem? Batman doesn't believe that the Joker is behind the murders he is being tried for. The hook? Batman's right. Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!
In this exciting episode Andy and Mike talk about the very brief seven issue Batman run written by Larry Hama. It was the dawn of a new age in Gotham. No Man's Land was over, a new century was beginning, and the Batman titles underwent a seismic creative shift with newer writers either taking on over taking over the exploits of the Dark Knight. Novelist Greg Rucka was writing Detective Comics. Devin Grayson, plucked from the cream of the fan fiction crop, took on new title Batman: Gotham Knights. But what about the flagship title Batman? Well, that fell to veteran writer and editor Larry Hama. Best known for his work on G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and Wolverine, Hama jumped over to DC Comics to write one of their best known and most popular characters. It seemed like a good fit. Hama was known for world building and writing action packed stories with clever dialogue.
So why did his run last only seven issues?
Andy and Mike talk about all seven of those issues and try to answer that question by looking at Batman issues 575 to 581. They talk about characters such as Banner and Orca and the themes that Hama seemed to be exploring as well as the style of his writing, which didn't seem to mesh with the new Batman ethos. They also talk about the art by Scott McDaniel where a rare disagreement between the hosts breaks out in a fierce, no holds barred, two men enter, one man leaves Thunderdome battle.
