Who would of thought that the best new bourbon distillery in the US would be coming out of Weston, MO? Well, the folks at McCormick's who have been in the alcohol business for decades knew they could do it, because they HAD done it in the past. Old dusty McCormick's whiskey decanters liter the top shelves of out of the way liquor stores. Fast forward 40 years, and Weston, MO is once again in the whiskey game with their Holladay brand. One of their best new releases is a 6yr old Bottled-in-Bond Missouri Straight Bourbons Whiskey utilizing soft red wheat in the mashbill. Respect that they waited this long, but even more respect that it tastes so darn good. Soft and fruity throughout, but with enough oak and proof to level out. Also, when Missouri passed their bourbon laws several years ago, they made sure that anything that uses the "Missouri Straight Bourbon" moniker HAS to by law use Missouri oak in the ageing process, which just happens to be the most premium oak in the world.

Distilled and aged in the middle of Bardstown, Sazerac's vintage "Barton" distillery has been producing under-the-radar flavor bombs for decades, and it all starts and stops with 1792 Small Batch, their flagship high rye expression. Now finally emerging from allocation purgatory, we've got plenty on hand to enjoy every day, and at a fantastic price. Big oak has always epitomized the 1792 profile, but the rye adds just enough fruit to balance it out. If Buffalo Trace is your elegant week-night pour, then 1792 needs to be your Friday night special!

Before EJ Gallo purchased the premium Venezuelan rum producer Diplomatico, it was the darling of craft bartenders, balancing the natural sweetness of aged rums with an oak profile more akin to whiskey, making it on the best alternative spirits for an Old Fashioned along with many other cocktails. On the nose you'll get orange peel, caramel, and black licorice. On the palate an oak driven vanilla bean is round and lasting, more typical of whiskey.

Our best bourbon deal in the store! The elegant baking spices and fruit of this traditionally "high rye" bourbon can't be beat and for $24.99 for a limited time, we may never see this deal again. This blended Japanese whisky from the House of Suntory is the epitome of art in liquid form. We just don't ever get enough! Though Japanese whisky borrowed much of its foundational structure from Scotland, they've managed to create singular expressions through blending malt and grain that go beyond traditional Scottish forms. Long story short...this stuff is delicious, and worth your attention. Harmony is a non-age stated blend of malt and grain whisky with a unique sandalwood and rosemary nose with light and ethereal floral aromas. On the palate, candied orange peel and vanilla cream burst with complex but integrated fruit. Hints of the famed Mizunara oak linger through the finish.
-
Over 100 batches of malt and grain whiskey are used to create this complex blended Japanese whisky. Bottled at 102.8 proof, "from the barrel" then takes these batches and ages them in "marrying" casks to further integrate the malt and grain components. The result is a remarkably robust Japanese whisky, much more tuned to the American palate with a peach, cinnamon, and Mizunara oak nose and an extremely vanilla bean, apricot, and baking spice palate sure to please even the hardiest cask strength bourbon drinker. Oh yea, and we've got it for only $44.99, the best price in the country!

If you're a fan of HOT ONES, you're going to love New Amsterdam "Heat Check" a pepper flavored vodka with all the right heat in all the right places. A spicy blend of Habanero, Fresno and Serrano chil peppers, this should be your immediate "go to" for spicy Bloody Mary's. The heat builds, but never too much.

There are two larger barrel campuses that Wild Turkey utilizes in their barrel program. The first is "Tyrone," which includes 23 warehouses perched above the Kentucky River near the distillery itself. The other, known as "Camp Nelson" contains only 6 rickhouses, and is 45 minutes down the road, but still near the Kentucky River. Camp Nelson was not built by Wild Turkey, but was originally used to age "Canada Dry Bourbon" This year's Camp Nelson barrel is 10years old from Warehouse CN-E, floor 5 and features a blast of sweet oak with honey, orange, and almonds. This year's Tyrone barrel is 9 years old from Warehouse TY-Q, floor 4 and features soft, earthy notes with a measured oak kick. Both are undeniably flavorful with the Camp Nelson tending to be a little sweeter.

Peatheads pay attention, this is your shot at this year's Ardbeg Spectacular. Aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-port casks, the combo of sweet and smoky, richly fruited, along with salty, smoky, nutty, and downright tar-level peat is as spectacular as the name suggests. Complex but not lost or disassociative as many multi-cask aged whiskies can be, the 46%, non-chill filtered peat bomb hits all the right notes. Ardbeg has always been on the peatier side of Islay, but the port-cask ageing really shows a different side of what their smoke profile is capable of imparting. VERY LIMITED. Email me directly at [email protected] if you want one. $149.99

Post a story and picture of your favorite whiskey glass on our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter pages (@BigRedLiquors ) for a chance to buy a bottle of 2023 George T Stagg! Or email me directly with a picture and story at [email protected]. All posts and emails will be gathered and the winner will be announced on Friday, June 14th. My favorite whiskey glass is an engraved rocks glass with a heavy bottom I received 13 years ago for officiating a wedding for college friends on Mackinac Island, my first of four! I've tried hundreds of different glasses since then, but I always seem to come back to this one. I received four originally, and have only broken ONE, which is a pretty good record considering little kids in the house. I like it because it feels substantial and I know the perfect amount of pour because it's where the liquid meets the bottom of the "C" initial engraved in the glass. The couple I married are still together, and I'm still happily using the glasses they gifted me all these years later. What better way to toast the things that last!

Tasting Notes: The first single malt release from Crown Royal this Valleyfield malt present light floral aromas with emerging cinnamon. On the palate, tropical fruit with banana, dragonfruit and pineapple. The malt sits back and lets the fruit take over with a cinnamon gum finish. At 90 proof I was most surprised by how much flavor this whiskey packed in for a Crown Release. The oak is background but there, but you can taste what surely must provide most of the weight and mouthfeel for Crown Deluxe. We've got 70 bottles. If you want one, email me at [email protected] $59.99

Tasting Notes: Two rye based bourbons and a finished bourbon finished again in Cabernet Franc barrels, then finished again in Merlot barrels and bottled at 98.6 proof. Cinnamon toast and dark fruit on the nose with leather in the background. On the palate, very soft and well-integrated fruit along with vanilla, spice, and more cinnamon on the finish. Lots of finishing, but its a light touch and still tastes very traditional. Soft, smooth, creamy, and fruity throughout.
